NEIGRIHMS MD Microbiology FAQs

Ques. What is the seat distribution for MD Microbiology at NEIGRIHMS, and who can apply for which category?

Ans. NEIGRIHMS has a total of 3 seats for MD Microbiology per session. Of these, 1 seat (50% of total, rounded) falls under the All India Quota (AIQ) filled through MCC counselling at mcc.nic.in, which is open to all eligible NEET PG qualified candidates across India. 1 seat is under the Open North East category, reserved for domicile/permanent residents of any of the 8 North Eastern states (Assam, Meghalaya, Manipur, Tripura, Mizoram, Nagaland, Arunachal Pradesh, Sikkim). The remaining 1 seat is reserved for candidates who have passed their MBBS from NEIGRIHMS itself, irrespective of their domicile status. Candidates from outside the North East can only apply for the AIQ seat through MCC counselling.

Ques. Do PG students at NEIGRIHMS receive a stipend, and what is the approximate monthly amount?

Ans. Yes, all PG students (Junior Residents) at NEIGRIHMS receive monthly emoluments as per the government residency scheme. The entry pay is Rs. 56,100 per month at Level 10 of the Pay Matrix, along with Non-Practising Allowance (NPA), Dearness Allowance (DA), and other applicable allowances. This makes the effective monthly take-home significantly higher than the base pay. This stipend is paid throughout the 3-year duration of the course, making NEIGRIHMS financially attractive compared to private medical colleges where students pay high fees without any stipend.

Ques. What happens if a PG student wants to leave the MD course midway at NEIGRIHMS?

Ans. NEIGRIHMS has a strict bond policy for PG students. If a Junior Resident (PG) leaves the course before completing one year, they are liable to pay Rs. 10 Lakhs as compensation to the institute. If they leave during the second year, the penalty is Rs. 15 Lakhs, and if they leave during the third year without completing the course, the penalty is Rs. 20 Lakhs. Additionally, original certificates are retained by the institute throughout the course duration and are returned only after the bond amount is deposited. Candidates should carefully consider this commitment before joining.

Ques. Is hostel accommodation guaranteed for MD Microbiology students at NEIGRIHMS?

Ans. Hostel accommodation at NEIGRIHMS is provided to Junior Residents (PG) subject to availability. The hostel fee is Rs. 12,000 per year (Rs. 36,000 for the full 3-year course). Since NEIGRIHMS is a residential campus at Mawdiangdiang, Shillong, most PG students are accommodated on campus. However, it is advisable to confirm hostel availability at the time of admission. Mess fees are separate and are decided by the Mess Committee based on actual monthly expenditure, so students should budget for this additional cost.

Ques. What is the research and clinical exposure like for MD Microbiology students at NEIGRIHMS?

Ans. The Department of Microbiology at NEIGRIHMS offers excellent research and clinical exposure. The department is a State Reference Laboratory for EQAS in HIV testing under NACO and an Avian Influenza Surveillance Laboratory under the National Centre for Disease Control. Students get hands-on training in advanced diagnostic techniques including VITEK-based automated bacteriology and mycology, PCR-based virology, and mycobacteriology. The department actively participates in national health programmes (RNTCP, NACO, NVBDCP, IDSP), giving students real-world public health microbiology experience. Dedicated PG and research labs are available for thesis and research work.

Ques. Can candidates from outside the North East region apply for MD Microbiology at NEIGRIHMS through MCC counselling?

Ans. Yes, candidates from outside the North East can apply for the All India Quota (AIQ) seat at NEIGRIHMS through MCC counselling at mcc.nic.in. The AIQ seat (50% of total seats) is open to all NEET PG qualified candidates across India, regardless of domicile. However, the Open North East category seats and NEIGRIHMS pass-out quota seats are not accessible to candidates from outside the North East. For the AIQ seat, candidates must register on the MCC portal and participate in the centralized counselling process. The NEIGRIHMS-specific application (for NE Open and NEIGRIHMS pass-out seats) is separate and requires applying directly on the NEIGRIHMS website.
