RNSIT Ph.D. (Mech Engg) FAQs
Ques. Is VTU-ETR mandatory for admission to the Ph.D. program at RNSIT, or can I apply directly?
Ans. VTU-ETR is mandatory for all candidates who do not hold a valid GATE, NET, or SET score. If you have a valid GATE/NET/SET qualification, you are exempted from appearing in VTU-ETR and can directly apply for the pre-registration interview at RNSIT. However, you still need to register on the VTU portal (jnanashodha.vtu.ac.in) and submit your application during the designated window. Direct admission without any qualifying exam is not permitted under VTU's Ph.D. regulations.
Ques. How many Ph.D. seats are available in Mechanical Engineering at RNSIT, and what are the research areas?
Ans. RNSIT's Mechanical Engineering Research Center currently has a limited number of seats, determined by the number of recognized supervisors and their available research slots. As of 2024, the department has supervisors in areas such as Design Engineering, Additive Manufacturing, Thermal Sciences, Materials Science, and AI & Robotics. Interested candidates should contact the department directly (principal@rnsit.ac.in or the Mech HOD's office) to check current seat availability and supervisor-wise research topics before applying.
Ques. Can I pursue the Ph.D. at RNSIT on a part-time basis while working in an industry or academic institution?
Ans. Yes, VTU allows Ph.D. enrollment on a part-time basis for candidates who are employed in recognized institutions or industries. However, the part-time option requires the candidate to spend a minimum stipulated time at the Research Center and fulfill all coursework and research requirements. The fee structure for part-time scholars is the same as full-time under VTU norms. Candidates opting for part-time must submit a No Objection Certificate (NOC) from their employer at the time of registration.
Ques. What is the minimum duration to complete the Ph.D. at RNSIT under VTU?
Ans. The minimum duration for a full-time Ph.D. under VTU is 3 years from the date of registration. This includes coursework (typically 1 year), research work, submission of synopsis, pre-comprehensive viva-voce, and final thesis submission with viva-voce. There is no fixed maximum duration, but VTU levies a penal fee for late thesis submission beyond 3 months from the synopsis submission date. Scholars are advised to plan their research timeline carefully to avoid additional charges.
Ques. What happens after I qualify VTU-ETR? Is there a separate interview at RNSIT?
Ans. Yes. After qualifying VTU-ETR, shortlisted candidates are called for a pre-registration interview at the Research Center of their choice - in this case, RNSIT's Mechanical Engineering Department. The interview is conducted by a panel of faculty members and evaluates the candidate's research aptitude, proposed research area, and alignment with available supervisors. The final selection is based on 70% weightage to ETR score and 30% to interview performance. Candidates are advised to prepare a brief research proposal before attending the interview.
Ques. Does RNSIT provide any financial support or fellowship for Ph.D. scholars in Mechanical Engineering?
Ans. RNSIT offers the R N Shetty Doctoral Fellowship for enrolled Ph.D. scholars. The 2025 notification for this fellowship is available on the RNSIT scholarships page (rnsit.ac.in/scholarships). Additionally, scholars with GATE/NET qualifications may be eligible for central government fellowships (JRF/SRF) if their research is part of a funded project. AICTE also offers a doctoral fellowship of Rs. 8,000/month for full-time scholars in AICTE-approved institutions. Scholars are encouraged to explore all available funding options at the time of enrollment.
