RNSIT BE Lateral AIML FAQs
Ques. As a diploma holder in Computer Science or Electronics, am I eligible for the BE {Lateral} AIML program at RNSIT? What branches are accepted?
Ans. Yes, diploma holders from Computer Science, Information Science, Electronics, Electrical, and other related engineering branches are eligible for the BE {Lateral} (AI & ML) program at RNSIT. The eligibility is governed by VTU and KEA norms for DCET. Generally, diploma holders from any engineering branch with a minimum of 45% aggregate marks (40% for SC/ST) are eligible to appear for DCET and apply for the AIML lateral entry program. For management quota, the eligibility criteria are slightly more flexible, and you can contact RNSIT's admissions office directly to confirm your branch eligibility.
Ques. What is the fee structure for the BE {Lateral} AIML program at RNSIT under DCET quota vs management quota?
Ans. Under the DCET/CET government quota, the total fees for the 3-year lateral entry AIML program at RNSIT are approximately Rs. 3.13 lakhs (Karnataka students) to Rs. 3.25 lakhs (other state students), covering tuition, VTU fees, college fees, and skill development fees. Under the management quota, the fees are Rs. 6,00,000 per year, totalling Rs. 18,00,000 for the 3-year program. This is a significant difference of approximately Rs. 14-15 lakhs. It is strongly advisable to exhaust DCET counselling options before opting for management quota admission.
Ques. What is the placement record of the AIML department at RNSIT? Do lateral entry students get the same placement opportunities?
Ans. The CSE (AI & ML) department at RNSIT has an excellent placement record. In 2025, the department recorded 173 job offers with a highest CTC of Rs. 50 LPA and 166 internship offers with a highest stipend of Rs. 1.10 LPM. In 2026 (ongoing), 87 job offers have already been made with a highest CTC of Rs. 11.53 LPA and 182 internship offers. Lateral entry students join from the 3rd semester and participate in the same campus placement drives as regular BE students from their 3rd year onwards. Key recruiters include Amazon, Flipkart, Walmart, Visa, SAP Labs, Oracle, IBM, Infosys, Wipro, and many others.
Ques. Is the BE {Lateral} AIML degree from RNSIT (VTU) recognized for higher studies like M.Tech or MS abroad?
Ans. Yes, the BE (Lateral Entry) in CSE (AI & ML) from RNSIT is a VTU-affiliated degree fully recognized by AICTE and UGC. Graduates are eligible to pursue M.Tech in AI/ML, Computer Science, Data Science, or related fields through GATE/PGCET. For MS abroad, the degree is recognized by most international universities, and graduates can apply to programs in AI, Machine Learning, Computer Science, or Data Science. Many RNSIT AIML alumni have pursued MS in the USA, Canada, Germany, and Australia. Note that for some universities abroad, a 4-year degree may be preferred; lateral entry students complete only 3 years, so it is advisable to check the specific requirements of the target university.
Ques. What is the difference between the regular BE (AIML) and the BE {Lateral} (AIML) at RNSIT in terms of curriculum and career outcomes?
Ans. The regular BE (AIML) is a 4-year program starting from the 1st year, while the BE {Lateral} (AIML) is a 3-year program for diploma holders who join directly in the 2nd year (3rd semester). Lateral entry students skip the first year subjects (basic sciences, engineering drawing, etc.) and join from the core engineering subjects. The curriculum from the 3rd semester onwards is the same for both regular and lateral entry students. Career outcomes and placement opportunities are also the same, as lateral entry students participate in the same campus placement drives. The only practical difference is that lateral entry students have one less year of college exposure, which means slightly less time for internships and extracurricular activities.
Ques. Does RNSIT's AIML department offer any research or innovation opportunities for lateral entry students?
Ans. Yes, RNSIT's AIML department actively promotes research and innovation for all students, including lateral entry students. The department has an Undergraduate Research Fund (URF) initiative that provides financial support for student research projects. The department also organizes hackathons like "Luminus" (with a prize pool of Rs. 1,20,000+) and "AlgoQuest," as well as the annual department fest "AI-Fiesta." Students can join the "Amura" AI club and the IEEE RAS Student Chapter for additional technical exposure. The department regularly conducts Faculty Development Programmes (FDPs) and Student Development Programmes (SDPs) on cutting-edge topics like Agentic AI, Generative AI, and Prompt Engineering, which are open to all students including lateral entry students.
