RNSIT BE (Data Science) FAQs
Ques. Is the BE (Data Science) at RNSIT the same as BE (CSE) or is it a different program? Will my degree say "Data Science" or "Computer Science"?
Ans. The BE (Data Science) at RNSIT is officially named "Bachelor of Engineering in Computer Science and Engineering (Data Science)" - it is a specialization under the CSE umbrella, not a standalone Data Science degree. Your degree certificate from VTU will mention "Computer Science and Engineering (Data Science)" as the branch. The curriculum is distinct from regular CSE, with a stronger focus on data analytics, machine learning, big data, and AI, while still covering core CS fundamentals. This specialization is well-recognized by the industry and is considered equivalent to CSE for most IT job applications.
Ques. What is the actual placement scenario for the CSE (Data Science) batch at RNSIT? Is it comparable to CSE?
Ans. The CSE (Data Science) department at RNSIT is relatively new (established 2021-22), and the first batch graduated in 2025. The department recorded 60 job offers in 2025 with a highest CTC of Rs. 10.83 LPA and 14 internship offers. While this is lower than the overall RNSIT placement numbers (1,060+ in 2025, highest CTC Rs. 50 LPA), it is important to note that the Data Science batch size is 180 students and the department is still building its placement track record. Students from CSE (DS) participate in the same campus placement drives as CSE students and are eligible for roles in data engineering, analytics, and software development.
Ques. What is the fee difference between KCET quota and management quota for BE (Data Science) at RNSIT? Is it worth paying management quota fees?
Ans. The fee difference is significant. KCET/CET quota students pay approximately Rs. 76,830 to Rs. 81,330 per year (total Rs. 3.07 to Rs. 3.25 lakhs for 4 years), while management quota students pay Rs. 6,00,000 per year (total Rs. 24,00,000 for 4 years). This is a difference of approximately Rs. 20-21 lakhs over 4 years. Whether management quota is worth it depends on your KCET rank and career goals. If you have a strong KCET rank (below 3000), you not only get the government quota fee but also a full tuition fee waiver scholarship at RNSIT. It is strongly advisable to exhaust KCET and COMEDK options before opting for management quota.
Ques. Does RNSIT offer any EMI or installment options for the management quota fees for BE (Data Science)?
Ans. Yes. Management quota students at RNSIT can pay the annual fees of Rs. 6,00,000 in TWO equal instalments of Rs. 3,00,000 each. The first instalment is paid at the time of admission, and the second instalment is paid within 3 months via a post-dated cheque. Additionally, RNSIT has partnered with GrayQuest to provide structured EMI payment options for students and parents. You can contact the RNSIT administrative office for details on the GrayQuest EMI facility. All payments must be made via Cheque/DD/NEFT/RTGS/Google Pay/PhonePe or online payment gateway; cash is strictly not accepted.
Ques. Can I switch from BE (Data Science) to BE (CSE) after joining RNSIT? What are the branch change rules?
Ans. Branch changes at RNSIT (and VTU-affiliated colleges in general) are governed by VTU regulations and are typically allowed only after the first year, subject to availability of seats in the desired branch and the student's academic performance (CGPA). The process is competitive, and branch changes to CSE are particularly difficult due to high demand. Students interested in switching must apply within the stipulated time after 1st year results and meet the minimum CGPA requirement set by the college. It is advisable to contact RNSIT's academic office directly for the current branch change policy and eligibility criteria before making a decision.
Ques. What are the higher study options after completing BE (Data Science) from RNSIT? Is the degree recognized for M.Tech or MS abroad?
Ans. After completing BE (Data Science) from RNSIT (VTU), graduates can pursue M.Tech in Data Science, Computer Science, AI/ML, or related fields through GATE/PGCET. The degree is fully recognized by VTU and AICTE, making it eligible for M.Tech admissions at NITs, IITs (through GATE), and Karnataka state universities (through PGCET). For MS abroad, the degree is recognized by most international universities, and graduates can apply to programs in Data Science, Computer Science, or Business Analytics. Many RNSIT alumni have pursued MS in the USA, Canada, Germany, and Australia. GRE scores are typically required for US universities, while some European universities accept without GRE.
