Tata Memorial Centre (TMC), Mumbai, is India’s oldest and largest cancer institute. Established on 28 February 1941, it operates as an autonomous institution under the Department of Atomic Energy, Government of India. TMC is affiliated with Homi Bhabha National Institute (HBNI), a Deemed University, and recognised by the World Health Organization (WHO), the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), and the Union for International Cancer Control (UICC).

TMC does not currently appear in NIRF Medical 2025 or in other major Indian ranking bodies. It is primarily recognised as India’s premier cancer treatment and training institution through its clinical standing and research record.

The main clinical campus is located at Parel, Mumbai. The research and education wing, Advanced Centre for Treatment Research and Education in Cancer (ACTREC), is based at Kharghar, Navi Mumbai. Across all centres, TMC registers approximately 1,20,000 new cancer patients annually, with around 60% receiving free or subsidised care.

TMC Admission Process

MD (Postgraduate Medical Degree)

MD seats at TMC are filled under the All-India Quota through MCC PG counselling. The selection stages are:

  • Eligibility: MBBS degree recognised by NMC; completed 1-year compulsory rotating internship
  • Entrance: Valid NEET PG score (no separate TMC test)
  • Selection: MCC PG All-India Quota Counselling - choice filling, seat allotment, document verification, and joining
  • Bond: 1-year mandatory Senior Residency at TMC or associated centre after MD completion

MD closing ranks at TMC are among the most competitive in the NEET PG All-India Quota for Radiation Oncology and Radiodiagnosis. Candidates aiming for these seats typically need a NEET PG score in the top 1-2 percentile range.

DM and M.Ch (Super-Specialty Degrees)

DM and M.Ch seats at TMC are filled through NEET-SS conducted by NBE, followed by MCC Super-Specialty Counselling. Eligibility:

  • DM: MD or DNB in the relevant broad specialty, recognised by NMC; valid NEET-SS score
  • M.Ch: MS or DNB in General Surgery or the relevant surgical specialty, recognised by NMC; valid NEET-SS score
  • Selection: MCC Super-Specialty Counselling - choice filling, seat allotment, document verification, and joining

DM Medical Oncology and M.Ch Surgical Oncology seats at TMC represent the most sought-after super-specialty positions in government-sector cancer training in India.

M.Sc and Advanced Diploma

M.Sc and Advanced Diploma programmes admit candidates through a TMC-conducted written entrance test followed by a personal interview. Eligibility:

  • M.Sc: B.Sc in the relevant health science field - Nursing, Clinical Research, Nuclear Medicine Technology, Occupational Therapy, or Public Health
  • Advanced Diploma (AMIT / ADRT): B.Sc in a relevant allied health science field
  • No national-level entrance exam required; selection is entirely by TMC’s own process

TMC notifies application schedules, syllabus, and test dates on its official website. No intermediary counselling body is involved for these programmes.

TMC Career Outcomes

TMC does not conduct campus placements. Career outcomes for its postgraduate students are structured through stipends during training, post-programme bond positions, and oncology-sector salaries that follow.

MD residents at TMC receive a monthly stipend throughout the programme. Most MD graduates complete a mandatory 1-year Senior Residency at TMC or at one of its associated Homi Bhabha Cancer Hospitals, at a gross pay of INR 1,27,260 per month. A 1-Year TMC Fellowship position pays INR 1,38,600 per month gross.

Government hospital specialist positions pay INR 1.2 lakh to INR 1.8 lakh per month. TMC training credentials are widely recognised among private oncology hospitals and academic cancer centres across India.

Note: MD programme graduates at TMC are required to complete a 1-year Senior Residency at TMC or an associated Homi Bhabha Cancer Hospital before taking up independent practice. Failure to fulfil this bond obligation attracts a financial penalty as per programme terms.

TMC Campus and Infrastructure

Tata Memorial Hospital, the flagship clinical campus, is located at Parel, Mumbai. The research and education campus, ACTREC, is at Kharghar, Navi Mumbai and houses advanced translational research laboratories, clinical research units, and postgraduate training infrastructure for allied health and M.Sc programmes.

TMC’s clinical infrastructure is among the most specialised in Asia for oncology. Facilities include India’s first government-sector Proton Therapy Unit, commissioned in 2023, alongside multiple linear accelerators, a bone marrow transplant unit, PET/CT scanners, a nuclear medicine department, and a 24-hour oncology emergency service. The hospital manages over a million patient footfalls annually across its Mumbai campuses.

TMC’s network extends to four Homi Bhabha Cancer Hospitals in Visakhapatnam, Sangrur, Varanasi, and Muzaffarpur, as well as Dr. Bhubaneswar Borooah Cancer Institute in Guwahati. Postgraduate fellows and senior residents may be posted to any of these centres as part of their training or bond obligation.

TMC vs AIIMS New Delhi vs Kidwai Memorial Institute of Oncology

Doctors seeking super-specialty oncology training in the government sector typically compare TMC, AIIMS New Delhi, and Kidwai Memorial Institute of Oncology, Bangalore. Each institution leads in a different dimension relevant to the aspirant’s decision.

Candidate should have passed B.Sc. in any stream. Candidates who are due to appear at the qualifying examination, or have already appeared and are awaiting result can also apply for admission. But such candidates must furnish proof of passing the qualifying examination (B.Sc. with the following subjects - Physics, Chemistry and either Biology or Mathematics) with requisite percentage of marks (50% in aggregate for General and OBC or 45% in aggregate in case of SC / ST Categories) at the time of counseling. TMC admission into all the courses is based on a common entrance test, followed by an interview. The institute also prefers NEET-PG scores for admission into MD, DM, and M.Ch courses. You can apply online for the admissions.
