Always remember that your success rate is directly proportional to your efforts and not your college.  Consider the following aspects and the preferred choice in each of them If you are looking for an elite peer pool with the most geniuses minds, prefer IIT Bombay to IIIT Hyderabad as it comprises JEE toppers, Olympiad Toppers, etc If you are looking for a better coding culture then IIIT Hyderabad it is. It has a larger number of students involved in GSoC, Competitive Programming, Open Source, etc If you want a better campus experience as a whole go for IIT Bombay. Its campus has a lake, a hill, a jungle, Mumbai City Skyline view, thus the quality of life is better here. However, there are some dark facts behind these placement drives. I came to know of these realities through true friends and pass outs of the institute. One cannot deny the fact that IIT Bombay has witnessed an increase in demand due to the strong influence it has. It is sad to say but many coaching centers run by alumni of IIT Bombay promote the institute. When engineering aspirants contact the alumni for counseling and advice, most of them portray IIT Bombay as the best choice leading to a more influential decision. Ans. I haven’t heard of many people who actually join Electrical Engineering because they want to genuinely pursue Electrical. Rather most students take Electrical because their JEE Rank did not allow them admission to any other branch. In fact, some even take Electrical Engineering and opt for minors that match with their areas of interest. When it comes to interdisciplinary subjects, IIT Bombay provides the perfect chance to do so. What usually happens is that students are unaware of their area of interest while choosing their branch during admission. As a result they end up taking disciplines that match their ranks rather than interests. However, if you are clear about your choice of branch, don’t hesitate and go for it without thinking much of your rank. Although difficult, you can always change your branch if you later regret choosing that specific branch. I always suggest aspirants only choose the branch on the basis of their preferences and not the placements. Even if you land a good job, you will never be satisfied if you are working in an area that does not intrigue or excite you.Read more

If you're interested in pursuing design-oriented courses closely related to mechanical engineering, this department is worth considering. The dual degree program in Engineering design has a good scope for campus placements, which are comparable to placements in the mechanical engineering department. Although there are not many seats available for undergraduates, it's surprising to note that the department closes at lower ranks in JEE than other departments such as Civil engineering and Chemical engineering. Ans. In my opinion, you have made the right decision by dropping the PITS Pilani EEE branch for IIT Madras Metallurgy. My cousin was forced to take IIT Madras Metallurgy by his mother. Initially, he was disappointed but his mother advised him to continue with the same enthusiasm he cleared JEE. Many students after getting admission relax and this opens opportunities for those who continue to slog even after admission. Your ultimate goal should be to change your branch for which you will have to work hard. This can be done by staying among the top 5% of the batch with around 9 CGPA. You can switch to Mechanical and even to Electrical sometimes with a good CGPA. All you have to do is Focus on your subjects Do well in the tutorials Perform well on quiz  Ace your practicals  Score high in the Final semester exam IIT Madras has a plethora of subjects to choose from in addition to a dual degree. You can change your branch provided your academic performance is at par with the requirements in the 3rd year. Some other highlights that might convince you further to choose IIT Madras are Creative clubs like C5 help in harnessing skills in your area of interest. These clubs have made amazing innovations and you can always learn so much by being a part of them. Another factor people consider is the environment provided by the Institute. Most North Indians consider the culture at IIT Madras way different and thus end up losing focus and motivation. If you are affected by such elements, choose the Institute you think will have a culture and people similar to your tastes. Many North Indians are settling well in IIT Madras and ending up in the top 5% of the batch. So what matters is that the Institute you are choosing should provide the kind of environment that motivates you to learn and excel. You will face tremendous competition and thus you will have to stay focussed and motivated to do well in that kind of environment. It is extremely necessary to choose the right environment for you as you will be spending 4 years of your life there.
