UBC is a good school

Likes

The campus life is diverse and lots of options for clubs courses, etc.
The teaching staff, is really helpful and friendly.

Dislikes

Housing crisis, the long waiting list for on-campus housing.
Gyms can be crowded sometimes.

The factors that drove me to UBC were obviously good education, but apart from that it was the lively campus life that UBC provides and of course the beautiful campus.

Review on UBC

Likes

The beautiful campus, the people, opportunities, and the unique college experience. UBC was a very fast-forward institution that cared and prepared their students for a bright future.

Dislikes

The tuition fee is exceedingly too expensive for international students, it’s impossible to live on campus due to the high cost of living and expensive rent.

I chose this college as it had a Global ranking (one of the top 50 schools worldwide), Business program’s excellent reputation among other business programs in Canada, and the beautiful campus. My overall experience at UBC was insightful, eye-opening, and rewarding. The people I met and the knowledge I gained from learning at one of the best universities in Canada will be beneficial for my career down the line.

UBC - a whole new world

Likes

The campus! And my course. Fun fact: UBC has been a film spot for many movies. So you can just imagine how beautiful the campus is.
There are specific people who help international students as well.

Dislikes

Specific to my course I have no complaints. But my friends in other courses wish that their course (data science) was more application based rather than theoretical. So maybe I don't like the fact that some courses are not application oriented.

Scholarship

I received 2 scholarships for a total of $1500. It wasn't a special scholarship. I received an email from the University stating that they were offering me the International Tuition Award and it was up to me to accept or decline it. I did not have to write any essays or give any interviews to receive the scholarship.

For my program UBC is ranked in the top 10 in the world. Additionally for my course, it provides all the required courses that I need to study in order to be certified for my profession in Canada. According to the BCBA website (Board Certified Behaviour Analyst), UBC is one of the universities that is verified to provide the required courses in order to attempt the certificate exam. As an international student, my experience has been great. The students are friendly, the professors are amazing. The course is extremely student friendly and if we plan properly, it's not stressful throughout the semester, including the end term exams.

UBC: The Good, The Bad, and the Expensive

Likes

I love the campus, the professors, the counseling services, and the students.
The student council also seems to actually care about others, so that’s always a bonus.
The professors are understanding yet challenging, which is a great balance.

Dislikes

I wish the courses were more interesting or out-of-the-box.
I would also appreciate a decrease in various fees, as most international students do.
I also wish UBC was more attentive towards helping socially awkward/anxious students socialize, especially those who do not get on-campus housing first year.

Scholarship

Yes, I received the OIS (Outstanding International Student) scholarship for C$10,000 for my first year. The application process for the scholarship, if I remember correctly, is the normal college application but with an earlier deadline, and with added questions pertaining to your family’s financial status/capabilities.

UBC is diverse and contains a student and staff population of open-minded, multi-cultured, and mature beings. I have grown up in schools that nurture such an environment, and so I value these characteristics in people and in education. Being smart isn’t just about numbers and grades, it’s about how you think, view others, your drive in life, your ability to solve problems and critically think about things outside of x + y, because real life is so much more than just that. My overall experience at UBC is that it is international, tolerant, diverse, aspirational, and challenging enough. It gives you a variety of clubs, friends, and courses to choose from to suit your best interests, has great career and mental health counseling, decent-paying jobs at the university, great academic/research/work facilities and social activities, and much more. It may big enormous, but it prepares you for the world which is much, much bigger.

Life of a Uni Kid

Likes

I liked the place along with the university, so that was a big factor
The campus facilities and resources also contribute to a fulfilling college experience, providing ample opportunities for research, collaboration, and community engagement. Overall, I value the sense of belonging and the rich learning experiences. it can be overwhelming at first but you find your path in your own time.

Dislikes

while the campus community is generally supportive, I've noticed occasional instances where issues related to diversity and inclusion could be addressed more proactively.

I would define my experience overall to be enriching. It is safe to say that in my journey at UBC, I have become more self-reliant and independent and most of all learned how to manage and allocate time to important tasks. All of this is still a work in progress, but definitely moving in the right direction.

Memorable experience

Likes

UBC is the top most ranked university in Canada. I got offer letters from both universities i.e. York University and UBC as well but I choose UBC over York due to its top ranking.
Immense resources for everything, UBC has so many opportunities even during the degree they have a number of jobs for working on-campus and it is ranked amongst the top universities in Canada. The faculty is so good and it is indeed a pleasure to connect with all of them.
The professors allow you to think innovatively and help their best to make your concepts clear. The studying pattern is so different from my home country, at first I was apprehensive about it but after giving my first exam at UBC I realized that their focus is to make you understand the concept, and the exams are application based so you do not need to cram everything and spill it out in the exams, usually, they teach you how to apply the rule or the law laid down by the judges in a scenario and ask you your opinion.

Dislikes

There is nothing I dislike about UBC. I can say that the campus is so huge that you need more time than a year to explore it. UBC has so and fun activities and events that it makes it really hard to utilize and attend all of them in that one year along with your studies and part-time.

The course duration was really good, however, there is no on-campus placement. The faculty and academics are commendable and overall my experience with UBC has been memorable. It was a great opportunity to study with such a good faculty and get so much exposure. To conclude, I would say to study abroad the first research should be done about the country you want to move to, does it has job opportunities or not then you need to hunt the college or university. Getting into UBC was a great thing however the moment I would get a job in my legal field then I would be on cloud nine.

It's very renowned and one of the best universities in the world.
What truly sets my university apart and makes it special to me is its small, tight-knit community. Unlike UBC Vancouver's sprawling campus, our university fosters a close and intimate environment that allows for meaningful connections and personalized experiences.

Dislikes

Firstly, the lack of vibrant events and social events on campus has left me yearning for a more engaging atmosphere that fosters student connections and memorable experiences.
Secondly, it is disheartening to see some professors receiving consistently poor reviews from students yet remaining in their positions without any discernible improvement. This raises concerns about the university's commitment to maintaining a high standard of teaching and ensuring student satisfaction.
Additionally, the inadequacy of transit facilities poses a significant inconvenience for students, making commuting to and from the campus a challenging aspect of university life.

My overall experience is okay. I am not very happy with the studies and curriculum as well as the campus life but i still got to learn a lot of things which I wouldn't have if I was to be still in India,

A Glimpse of UBC Vancouver

Likes

It was in the top 3 universities in Canada and among the top 50 in the world. There was interesting research going on in the field of my interest. It was located in a city whose weather was preferable.

Scholarship

I got the International Tuition Award which was automatically applied as soon as I applied. It was valued at around $3200. I also got an entrance scholarship of $2000, which was given by the department without any separate application.

It was an amazing experience, especially since it was completely different from how the education scene is in India. You are responsible for yourself and your career. Seniors and mentors can only guide you, but you will be the one steering. There is a diversity in the professors as there is in the students. The campus is huge and beautiful.
