Laurentian University offers 25+ scholarships, of which 10+ are accessible to Indian applicants. Awards range from a CAD 600 travel grant to the CAD 60,000 International Excellence Scholarship for top undergraduate entrants.

Every named award below sits on an official Laurentian page or a Canadian government scholarship site. All INR figures use one live rate stated below.

  • Standard UG international tuition (2026-27): CAD 30,363.92 per year (INR 20.77 Lakhs).
  • With top-tier Excellence Scholarship applied: Net CAD 15,363.92 per year (INR 10.51 Lakhs), roughly a 49% cut.
  • Master’s GTA earnings: CAD 10,034 per year (INR 6.87 Lakhs), which offsets most Arts and Science Master’s tuition.
  • Next open UG deadline: August 15, 2026 for the January 2027 intake, closing within days.

Currency Note: All INR conversions use the live rate of 1 CAD = INR 68.42 as of August 2026. Amounts above INR 1 Lakh are shown in Lakhs (1 Lakh = 1,00,000).

Laurentian University Scholarships for UG Students

Two automatic entrance awards do the heavy lifting for Indian UG applicants at Laurentian University. The top tier pays up to CAD 60,000 over four years, and the standard tier pays up to CAD 40,000, both triggered by admission average alone.

ScholarshipAmount (CAD / INR)EligibilityRenewalHow to Apply
International Excellence Scholarship (Top Tier) CAD 15,000/year, up to CAD 60,000 total (INR 10.26 Lakhs/year, INR 41.05 Lakhs total) Admission average 90-100%; first undergraduate degree; 100% full course load; pays international fees Renewable up to 3 additional years if 80% average maintained Automatic on admission; no separate form
International Excellence Scholarship (Standard Tier) CAD 10,000/year, up to CAD 40,000 total (INR 6.84 Lakhs/year, INR 27.37 Lakhs total) Admission average 80-89.9%; first undergraduate degree; 100% full course load Renewable for 3 years if 80% average maintained Automatic on admission; no separate form

The Excellence Scholarship is the only material UG entrance award Laurentian publishes for international entrants. It works well for Indian Class XII toppers, since a 90%+ CBSE, ISC, or state board score routinely maps to the top tier.

Renewal is strict. Drop below the 80% GPA floor and the award terminates permanently for the remaining years. Switching to a part-time load (under 24 credits from September to April) also disqualifies the renewal.

Laurentian University Scholarships for PG / Master’s Students

Master’s funding at Laurentian is stipend-driven, not tuition-waiver driven. Four awards matter: the Graduate Teaching Assistantship, Dean’s Entrance Scholarship, Master’s Travel Grant, and the term-based Graduate Internal Awards.

ScholarshipAmount (CAD / INR)EligibilityRenewalHow to Apply
Graduate Teaching Assistantship (Master’s) CAD 10,034 per year (INR 6.87 Lakhs) Full-time Master’s; minimum B+ (75%) average; hours split between teaching and fellowship Renewable up to 2 years Nominated by the graduate program coordinator; contact department post-admission
Dean’s Entrance Scholarship (Master’s) CAD 1,500 one-time (INR 1.03 Lakhs) Meritorious entering Master’s students One-time entrance award, disbursed in Fall term Automatic; no application required
Master’s Travel Grant CAD 600 one-time (INR 41,052) Full-time Master’s students; covers conference or field-research travel One-time for the whole program Apply through department
Various Graduate Internal Awards Variable (typically CAD 500 to CAD 5,000) Grad students registered during the competition term; merit-based Term-cycle awards Deadlines: October 30, 2026 (Fall cycle); February 26, 2027 (Winter cycle)

The GTA is the practical earnings floor most Indian Master’s students land on. Combined with the low-end Arts and Science Master’s tuition of CAD 11,426.65, net out-of-pocket for one year can fall under CAD 1,400. That equals about INR 0.95 Lakhs annually.

Reddit Insight: Threads on r/GradSchool and r/StudyInCanada flag that Ontario grad TA assignments are department-decided. Applicants who email the faculty supervisor directly during admission secure GTA hours far more reliably than those who wait for the offer letter.

India-Specific Scholarships at Laurentian University

Laurentian University does not currently publish any India-only or nationality-restricted scholarship. Indian applicants qualify under the same international awards listed in every other section here.

The practical result is favourable. Indian Class XII cohorts with 90%+ boards translate cleanly into the CAD 60,000 top-tier Excellence bracket. Students with 80-89% CBSE, ISC, or state board averages hit the CAD 40,000 standard tier.

What Indian applicants realistically access at Laurentian University:

  • Both tiers of the International Excellence Scholarship (UG only, automatic).
  • Graduate Teaching Assistantship at Master’s and PhD levels (department-nominated).
  • Dean’s Entrance Scholarship at both graduate levels (automatic on admission).
  • Master’s and PhD Travel Grants (department-level application).
  • Federal external awards: CGRS-D, OGS, and the Trudeau Foundation Scholarship for eligible research areas.

For an actual India-specific fee cut, most Indian families stack the Excellence Scholarship with education loans from Indian public and private lenders. This shifts the affordability calculus more than any single scholarship listed above.

Laurentian University PhD Scholarships

PhD funding at Laurentian is heavier per year than at Master’s level, but the same stipend-first design applies. Doctoral PhD tuition sits at CAD 21,687.48 across every discipline for international students.

ScholarshipAmount (CAD / INR)EligibilityRenewalHow to Apply
Graduate Teaching Assistantship (PhD) CAD 14,547 per year (INR 9.95 Lakhs) Full-time PhD; minimum B+ (75%) average; teaching plus fellowship hours Renewable up to 4 years Nominated by graduate program coordinator; contact PhD department post-admission
Dean’s Entrance Scholarship (Doctoral) CAD 3,000 one-time (INR 2.05 Lakhs) Meritorious entering PhD students One-time entrance award, disbursed in Fall term Automatic; no application required
PhD Travel Grant CAD 1,200 one-time (INR 82,104) Full-time PhD students; covers conference or fieldwork travel One-time for the whole program Apply through department

Stacked over four years, the PhD internal package tops out around CAD 62,388 (INR 42.69 Lakhs). That covers about 72% of the four-year PhD tuition bill of CAD 86,750.

The real PhD funding lift for Indian applicants sits in the external federal awards, listed next.

External Government Scholarships for Laurentian University Students

Two federal awards dominate the external funding landscape for Indian graduate applicants at Laurentian University. The Canada Graduate Research Scholarship - Doctoral (CGRS-D) replaced Vanier under Budget 2024 and is now open to international students. The Ontario Graduate Scholarship (OGS) is the province-level equivalent for both Master’s and PhD candidates.

ScholarshipAmount (CAD / INR)EligibilityDurationDeadline
Canada Graduate Research Scholarship - Doctoral (CGRS-D) CAD 40,000/year, CAD 120,000 total (INR 27.37 Lakhs/year, INR 82.10 Lakhs total) Doctoral; first-class average; first PhD; international students eligible within 15% quota per federal agency (CIHR, NSERC, SSHRC) 3 years, non-renewable Nomination by Laurentian graduate faculty; tentative November 2026 (annual cycle)
Ontario Graduate Scholarship (OGS) CAD 5,000 per term, up to CAD 15,000 per year (INR 10.26 Lakhs) Master’s or PhD; minimum A- average; full-time enrolment; international students eligible within Laurentian’s limited annual quota 1 year; reapply annually Tentative January 31, 2027 (annual cycle)
Pierre Elliott Trudeau Foundation Scholarship Full funding plus research and travel allowances (approx CAD 40,000/year, INR 27.37 Lakhs) Doctoral in humanities or social sciences; research on human rights, citizenship, Canada in the world, or environment; international students eligible Up to 3 years Institutional nomination; tentative mid-December 2026
John Charles Polanyi Prize CAD 20,000 one-time (INR 13.68 Lakhs) Early-career researcher at an Ontario university in Physics, Chemistry, Physiology/Medicine, Literature, or Economic Science; PhD completed within past 2 years One-time Nomination through institution; tentative January 2027

Reddit Insight: On r/AskAcademiaCanada, current CGRS-D holders repeat one gotcha for international applicants. The 15% quota is applied per agency (CIHR, NSERC, SSHRC), not per university. Over-subscribed research areas face steeper odds than the topline 15% suggests.

Practical stacking works well at the PhD level. An Indian candidate who wins CGRS-D plus a Laurentian GTA and Dean’s Entrance clears CAD 57,547 in year one (INR 39.37 Lakhs). That comfortably covers PhD tuition and Sudbury living costs.

Laurentian University Scholarships: Frequently Asked Questions

Ques. What is the maximum scholarship funding an Indian student can stack at Laurentian University?

Ans. An Indian UG entrant with a 90%+ admission average locks in the CAD 60,000 International Excellence Scholarship over four years (INR 41.05 Lakhs total). At the PhD level, the highest realistic stack is CGRS-D plus GTA plus Dean’s Entrance Scholarship, which touches CAD 57,547 in year one (INR 39.37 Lakhs). Excellence Scholarship holders cannot double-claim any other Laurentian entrance award of the same type.

Ques. When do I apply for Laurentian scholarships, and when do decisions come?

Ans. Most Laurentian awards are automatic and tied to the admission decision itself. The next admission deadlines are August 15, 2026 for the January 2027 UG intake and June 15, 2027 for the September 2027 UG intake. Excellence Scholarship results land inside the offer letter, so there is no separate scholarship result date.

Ques. Do I need to submit a separate scholarship application at Laurentian University?

Ans. No separate form exists for the International Excellence Scholarship or the Dean’s Entrance Scholarship. Both are triggered automatically by the admission decision. The Graduate Teaching Assistantship, Travel Grants, and Various Internal Awards require department-level nomination or a term-based application submitted through the graduate program office.

Ques. What admission average qualifies me for the CAD 60,000 Excellence Scholarship?

Ans. The top-tier CAD 60,000 award requires a 90% to 100% admission average. Indian Class XII candidates from CBSE, ISC, and most state boards can hit this with a 90%+ aggregate across the best-of-five required subjects. Falling into the 80% to 89.9% band drops the award to the standard tier at CAD 40,000 (INR 27.37 Lakhs) over four years.

Ques. Does the Excellence Scholarship cover living costs in Sudbury?

Ans. The CAD 15,000 annual disbursement at the top tier roughly halves tuition but does not cover living costs. Sudbury off-campus rent runs CAD 700 to CAD 1,100 per month. Food and transport add another CAD 500 to CAD 700 monthly. Indian students typically bridge the gap through part-time on-campus work (20 hours per week) and the RBC or SBI education loan route.

Scholarship

  • Laurentian university does not provide any scholarships for international students. To the best of my knowledge, none of my batchmates have any scholarships but there is no need to worry if you are doing thesis-based masters; you can avail of scholarships like the Queen Elizabeth Scholarship and OSAP scholarships by the government of Canada to support international students. I don't know much details about it.

  • Off-campus accommodation because on-campus accommodation won't be affordable for everyone, but on-campus accommodation has high-class facilities, and there are many categories of residences available, like pet-friendly residences, family, single-student and sharing residences. For first-year students, its compulsory to purchase a meal plan if you are opting university residence.

Scholarship

Laurentian offered me an entrance scholarship of $10000 CAD based on my performance in grade 12.

First of all, Laurentian gave me $10000 CAD as entrance scholarship was by-far the most my other friends were getting at the time in other universities. I always felt like uni with large classes would throw me off my game in uni and Laurentian has like 20-25 students per lecture. I wouldn't call it the best business program but it's decent enough to find work in Ontario.

It was a small campus with lots of outdoor activities in the area. It was far enough away from home but not too far that my parents would not be able to visit me. It had smaller classes so you were able to talk with profs and you weren't just another number in the pool.

It is in my hometown therefore, it is the closest school to me and offered my program. Staying here meant fewer expenses for me and my family so this school was one of the options in my town. There are many other schools in my province but the expenses are extremely high to attend.
