Course Curriculum

8

  • One of my faculty members told me that if you're coached in India, you will definitely do well in other parts of the world and I found it to be true personally because the curriculum is really easy and structured so that even average students can learn.
  • The only thing is that you've got to be present in classes regularly and invest some time to learn. Regarding the class schedule, its up to us, the students, to decide how many courses/subjects we learn in 1 semester and 1 course will be for 3 hours maximum. Classes will be conducted on morning, noon, and evening shifts. In my program there are more Indian students

Admission Experience

  • I applied to the following 3 universities:
    •  Laurentian, McGill, and Lakehead University.
  • I got admission in all 3 and was not rejected. The reason why I chose Laurentian was because of its renowned faculty members and also the first university to accept my profile. I had to pay initial deposit within 1 month of the acceptance so I decided not to lose this golden opportunity and hence I paid my initial deposit and secured my admission
  • The primary reason why I chose Laurentian was because of the affordable fees compared to other public universities in Canada. For admission, we must score above 72% (this may vary based on program you choose) and we need to submit a personal statement indicating reason for choosing the university, followed by official transcript (mailed from the university in our home country), Letter of recommendation from the professors in college/university of our home country/the institution where you've studied and no backlog certificate
  • 2024 September , It took about 2 months for the admission procedures. But you need to apply as early as possible since admissions can get closed at any time For example, if you need to go for may intake, you've got to apply at least in January, but we cannot guarantee that you will get admitted . For me, I've completed my application on 2024 may to get admitted in 2024 September . So I request you to start your application as early as possible.

Faculty

10

  •   I don't have an idea about the faculty-student ratio as I'm new to this university but one thing is that every faculty members are really supportive and they use modern aids for teaching. We will get exposure to both theoretical and practical learning.
  • But I can't assure that faculty members will assist for part-time jobs because they are not supposed to keep any personal relations with students.

Campus Life

10

  • I don't know the exact number of campuses my university has since I'm new here. Some facilities available are library, Student recreation, game space, University Clinic and vaccination center. There are events like cultural fests, Winter break/Xmas part and so on. The main student organization is GSA for graduate students and SGA for undergraduate students

Part Time Jobs

  • A Graduate Teaching Assistant (GTA) position is available for eligible students under thesis-based masters but course-based masters students are not eligible. Other than the GTA position, the on-campus jobs available are cleaning and cloth stores on campuses.
  • Stores like Subway and Tim Hortons inside the university, Chartwells, and so on. For TA, average pay is 18-20 CAD per hour and for others, it depends on the nature of job but you'll be paid a minimum of 17-18 CAD per hour and you can work for 40 hours per week for on-campus jobs, whereas for off-campus jobs, only 24 hours per week is allowed. Its really hard to get on-campus jobs as the competition is high but once you secure it, things will be easy
  • Most Indian students work off campus and as per the current situation, its really tough to get a part-time job in Canada, and you have to wait a minimum of 4-6 months to get a part-time job. but on the flip side, if you have lot of connections, you'll get part-time job within 1 or 2 month of your arrival and almost all the employers offer jobs based on references, irrespective of what skills you have

Placement

8

  • I'm not the right person to answer this question but one thing I heard from my seniors is that if we are able to get placements from campus, things will be easy and to the best of my knowledge, about 40–60% of the students secure their field jobs within 6 months of graduation through campus placements and employment services. As per the current situation in Canada, its really tough to secure a job.

Accommodation

Off Campus
10

  • Off-campus accommodation because on-campus accommodation won't be affordable for everyone, but on-campus accommodation has high-class facilities, and there are many categories of residences available, like pet-friendly residences, family, single-student and sharing residences. For first-year students, its compulsory to purchase a meal plan if you are opting university residence.

Exams

  • Exam : IELTS: Overall score of 6.0 with no band less than 6.0
  • Documents: Letter of Recommendation (LOR), Personal Statement/Statement of Interest, and Your Latest CV/Resume.
  • For a thesis-based programme, you have to contact your program advisor and you must get approval from them along with all other admission procedures. The documentation part will remain same for both Thesis and course-based masters

Fees

  • 15250 CAD per year for international students. It includes tuition fees, GSA Student Association fees, fees for study materials, insurance coverage, examinations, one card, and so on.
  • The mentioned fees are on an average basis. For programs like MBA, you need to pay 20,000 CAD and it may vary based on the program you choose. Since I've chosen MSC. In computational science, I had to pay the mentioned amount for first year.

Scholarship

  • Laurentian university does not provide any scholarships for international students. To the best of my knowledge, none of my batchmates have any scholarships but there is no need to worry if you are doing thesis-based masters; you can avail of scholarships like the Queen Elizabeth Scholarship and OSAP scholarships by the government of Canada to support international students. I don't know much details about it.
