ICSE students can improve in a maximum of three subjects in the ICSE Class 10 2026 Improvement Examination, not in all subjects. CISCE raised the earlier limit from two subjects to three for the 2026 cycle.

The Council for the Indian School Certificate Examinations (CISCE) conducts the ICSE Improvement Examination for students who have passed Class 10 and want to score better in specific subjects. The exam gives a second attempt at the theory paper; project work and internal assessment marks from the main exam are carried forward unchanged. Knowing how many subjects you can choose is the first step before planning your preparation.

  • You can appear in 1, 2 or a maximum of 3 subjects; CISCE increased the cap from two to three for the 2026 cycle.
  • Only passed subjects qualify for improvement; failed subjects go through the compartment or supplementary exam route.
  • Only theory papers are re-examined; internal assessment and project marks from the 2026 main exam are retained as is.
  • For 2026, registration was through schools only via the CISCE Career Portal from May 30 to June 5, 2026.
  • Fee: Rs 500 per paper; English has two separate papers, so appearing in both costs Rs 1,000.
  • ICSE 2026 Improvement Exam results are expected in the last week of July 2026.

How Many Subjects: The 3-Subject Cap Explained

You can appear for improvement in 1, 2 or at most 3 subjects from your ICSE Class 10 2026 paper. There is no option to improve across more than three subjects in a single attempt. CISCE raised this cap from the earlier limit of two subjects for the 2026 cycle, giving students a slightly wider window to strengthen their score.

Subject Count for Improvement Allowed?
1 subject only (e.g., Mathematics) Yes
2 specific subjects Yes
3 subjects Yes; this is the maximum allowed in 2026
More than 3 subjects or all subjects No; CISCE cap is 3 subjects
A subject you failed in the main exam No; use the compartment or supplementary route

When you appear in two or three subjects, each is assessed independently. CISCE records the better of the two scores per subject individually. Your overall result cannot go down even if one improved theory attempt comes out lower than the original.

Who Is Eligible for ICSE Class 10 Improvement Exam 2026?

Eligibility for the improvement exam is stricter than many students expect. Check these conditions before applying:

  • You must have appeared and passed in the ICSE Class 10 2026 main examination.
  • Students who were absent in any subject in the main exam are not eligible for the improvement route in that subject.
  • Only subjects in which you appeared and passed in the main exam can be selected for improvement.
  • Students who failed in subjects must apply for the compartment or supplementary examination, which is a separate CISCE process with its own rules and timeline.
  • There is no age restriction for appearing in the improvement examination.

Eligibility is verified at the school level. The school principal or designated staff confirms your result status and submits the improvement application through the CISCE Career Portal on your behalf. Individual students cannot apply directly to CISCE for the improvement exam.

What Gets Re-examined: Theory, English and Project Rules

A common misconception is that the entire subject is re-evaluated in the improvement exam. CISCE re-examines only the theory component. Everything else stays fixed from the main exam.

  • Theory papers are re-examined. You sit for the same written theory paper as in the main examination for each subject you choose.
  • Internal assessment and project work marks are carried forward from your ICSE 2026 main exam scores. These are not re-evaluated.
  • For subjects with multiple papers (such as Science with separate Physics, Chemistry and Biology papers), you can appear in one or more papers within that subject.
  • English has two separate papers: English Language and English Literature. You can choose one or both if English is among your selected subjects and pay Rs 500 per paper.

Your final improvement score is calculated using the new theory marks combined with your original internal assessment or project marks. Prepare accordingly, since only the theory component can improve your total.

What Happens to Your Marks After the Improvement Exam?

Your original ICSE 2026 mark sheet is not cancelled. After the improvement exam, CISCE issues a revised mark sheet. The better of the two scores is recorded for each subject you re-appeared in.

  • If the improved theory score produces a higher combined total, the revised mark sheet reflects the new marks for that subject.
  • If the improved theory score produces a lower or equal total, the original marks from the main exam are retained. You cannot score lower overall by appearing in the improvement exam.
  • The revised mark sheet may note the year of the improvement attempt alongside the original year of passing.
  • Many colleges and universities ask for both the original and the revised mark sheets during admissions; keep both copies safely.

Your pass status from the ICSE 2026 main exam is not affected by the improvement attempt. The improvement examination only gives you a chance to raise your scores, not risk them.
