- There are decent amount of food options but not a lot as compared to other big universities.
Dislikes
- The campus is little bit small as compared to other universities.
Campus Life
- There are various sports facilities for basketball, swimming, baseball, football and indoor games like snooker, chess, table tennis, and many more. A lot of events takes place throughout the year.
Accommodation
- Through whatsapp or facebook groups, I was able to connect with like minded people who were looking for accommodation.
- People can also look on websites like apartments.com or zillow to find the best suited apartment for them.
- The average rent for entire 2bhk apartment will be 1300-1400 usd

Campus Life
- My college has 2 campuses one in Catonsville and one more in college park
- My campus have library. Activity center for sports, fitness, pool, basketball court, volleyball court, tennis court, badminton court. Gym, Zumba classes. They also have medical and emergency services
- Major events like orientation for new students, bonfire event, fairgrounds, Diwali, Ganesh chaturthi, holi, thanksgiving events
- Extracurricular activities like sports even. Matches, traditional events and Indian students organization called EKTA community
Accommodation
- I found accommodation through my college social media groups like whatsapp, telegram, instagram, facebook
- My monthly rent is $1500 which was shared by 4 people. So it would be $320 per person excluding WiFi and electricity which costs around $50
- Challenges like calculating the distance from my house to university was big difficult as I’m new to this state
- My recommendation would be search for instagram or telegram accounts of the university international students
- My accommodation was 3 miles from my university or 8kms from my university

- The best thing about my college is Diversity and Inclusion, no racism at all.
- The professors are helping and provide guidance whenever you need them.
- There are options for online classes, so some of the lectures are online which helps in the last 2 semesters, when we are looking for full-time positions,
Dislikes
- No direct Recruitment from industries, although we have career fairs.
- Some of the master's programs lack the quality and reputation expected of students.
- Do not expect any funding like scholarships directly from the college, although there are GA positions but only in some programs, which is only partial tuition remission.
Campus Life
- UMBC has two campuses, and the other one is called Shady Grove.
- The main campus has a large library and a great gym called the RAC (Recreation Activity Center) with facilities for tennis, swimming, and basketball. Most sports matches are held at the Chesapeake Arena.
- We also have RIH(retriever integrated health), which provides medical services and mental health counseling.
Accommodation
- I live off-campus, as most graduate students do because it’s more affordable and a great way to connect with other graduates.
- My monthly rent is around $400-450. There are plenty of housing options, but the better ones are farther from campus. Nearby housing often has issues with pests and rodents. And also it's difficult to find accommodation nearby.
- There are some Indian groups on Facebook called EKTA for housing updates at UMBC. And also WhatsApp group but it is available only after admission.

Likes
- Costs less than average, including living cost
- Very good research opportunities in the University
- Lot of Indian crowd in masters program Very good Indian association which is helpful during house search. Well segregated groups to buy / sell used items for lesser price from other students, groups to search houses, groups to book rides etc.
Dislikes
- Remote area
- Small campus and hence competitive on-campus jobs
- Not many technical clubs (that I know of) for masters students to collaborate
Campus Life
-
My college has one campus
-
Gym is available, Pantry, table tennis, swimming pool indoor and outdoor, Tennis lawn, badminton court, Pool table, foosball, starbucks, chick fill a, dunkin donuts, big library with many rooms to study in. Health center for vaccines and blood tests
-
Major events - Home coming (contains fun carnivals, 5k runs etc), Holi party and Diwali party organized by indian student organization
Accommodation
- I opted for off campus housing as we have control over the expenses for wifi and electricity. We can share a room with another roommate that reduces rent per head.
- Monthly rent - 300$ included dishwasher, laundry, stove, oven (not microwave oven)
- Challenges - lot of students like to stay close to the university so finding an accommodation near the university is extremely competitive.
My accommodation was 10 min walk away from the university called Westland gardens. That's where most of the UMBC indians students stay.

Likes
- UMBC is known for its research especially in the field of computer science.
- It is near to Washington DC so students have a lot of opportunities.
- UMBC has smaller faculty to student ratio.
Dislikes
- It is a very small campus when compared to other US universities.
- It has a lot of traffic sometimes which will be hassle for students.
- Maryland state's weather is unpredictable.
Campus Life
Well, coming to clubs and co-curricular activities there are a lot! A lot!!! It's only been 1 month since my college started every single day there will be an event in my college. The things like library and sports facilities are very good.
Accommodation
I prefer off-campus housing there are various apartments near UMBC like West Land Gardens, Mount Ridge Apartments and Jamestown Apartments. These are the popular apartments in which students live. Some prefer to live on campus too.
Likes
- Factors that influenced me to choose UMBC over all other university were surrounding cities, living cost (which is quite cheaper compared to other cities with such highly ranked university), University campus, facilities provided in campus and to international students, availablity of On Campus jobs. Apart from other aspects, university offers multiple options for a single course, you will have at least 5-6 options for a single course, this gives a freedom to choose and explore multiple pathways.
Dislikes
- Some students may not be fond of UMBC's location in suburban Baltimore, feeling that it lacks the urban vibrancy found in other college towns. UMBC is located in a Baltimore county area, which I feel have few areas that is not as safe for students as it should be.
Campus Life
WIFI is available all the time on campus, it's free! We have a huge 6 storey building all dedicated to Library, you may see it's picture online. For sports, we have indoor and outdoor court for all sports. When it comes to clubs, UMBC has multiple clubs for all communities, for Indians we have HSC, Hindu Student Community, they organize events quite frequently to keep us connected with our roots.
Accommodation
UMBC provide on campus accommodation as well. But we choose to live outside but near the campus, rent will be around $280-$350 monthly for a shared room, without utilities like electricity and water bill. Two people sharing a room. You can find rooms with 2 Bedrooms, 3 Bedrooms or 4-5 bedrooms around the campus area, they all include basement. Almost all apartments have all kinds of facility, some may lack a laundry unit and dish washer.
Likes
- UMBC has all the facilities and perks except the location. The costs are comparatively low and curriculum equally good.
Campus Life
There is always something or the other going on campus. There is Graduate Student Association for Grad students which is very helpful and organize lot of events.
Accommodation
It is always sharing. If a room is shared per month rent goes around 300 USD.
Likes
- The MS program in cybersecurity is a dedicated program that is handled by people who have either actually worked or are still working in the field. The professors are interactive and the method for class is very good.
Dislikes
- The campus social scene is quite lacking, hence it is quite difficult for me to make new friends or meet new people, the campus is located in the sub-urban area so there isn't exactly much to do as in terms of night life.
Campus Life
The library, campus WiFi and sports facilities are up to the mark at UMBC as they have been recently renovated, sports facilities include an indoor gym, swimming pool, basketball court, badminton court, mini football court, volleyball court and a running track. The outdoor facilities include an outdoor swimming pool, lacrose field.
Accommodation
Usually students get shared accommodations as majority of the cost is split there by reducing the financial burden on the student, on an average accommodations can range from 1500$ - 2100$.
