University of Illinois, Urbana admissions run on a semester-based graduate cycle, with Fall as the primary intake for Indian applicants, and the Graduate College clears most PG candidates who present a four-year Bachelor’s at 62 to 65 percent with IELTS 6.5+ or TOEFL 79+ iBT for limited admission, while UG applicants need Class XII at 85 percent or above with core subject strength.

  • Next live deadline (Fall 2027 primary intake): 1 December 2026 for MS and PhD Computer Science and Chemistry.
  • Base tuition and application fee: Grainger Engineering base tuition USD 40,444 per year (around INR 38.22 Lakhs); non-Grainger graduate base USD 32,204 (around INR 30.43 Lakhs); Graduate application fee USD 90 (around INR 8,505) per program.
  • Eligibility floor: UG needs Class XII at 85%+; PG needs a four-year Bachelor’s at 62 to 65% plus English scores of IELTS 6.5 or TOEFL 79 iBT (limited status), or IELTS 7.5 or TOEFL 103 iBT (full status).
  • Acceptance rate: institution-wide around 36.6 percent, with tighter admits inside Grainger for CS and ECE.

The most-picked programs for Indian students are MS Computer Science, MEng Electrical and Computer Engineering, and MS Business Analytics; applicant feedback repeatedly flags UIUC’s two-tier English cutoff (limited versus full status) as the single biggest source of confusion, which the sections below unpack. For campus, placements, and the full program mix, see the University of Illinois, Urbana overview.

Admission Status: Open. The Fall 2027 intake (August 2027 start) is live on the UIUC Graduate College portal for Indian applicants. The nearest actionable deadline is 1 December 2026 for MS Computer Science, PhD Computer Science, and Chemistry, with an application fee of USD 90 (around INR 8,505) per program. UG applicants using the Common Application face an Early Action deadline of 1 November 2026 and a Regular Decision deadline of 5 January 2027, with a USD 75 (around INR 7,088) application fee.

University of Illinois, Urbana Application Deadlines

University of Illinois, Urbana runs two graduate intakes each year: Fall (August start) and Spring (January start), with Fall carrying the widest program coverage and functioning as the primary intake for Indian applicants. Deadlines are program-specific, not institution-wide, so the exact date depends on the department. The table below lists the confirmed Fall 2027 dates per the Illinois Graduate College international applicants page.

Currency note: All INR figures in this article use USD 1 = INR 94.5, the live rate on 8 September 2026. Live rates may vary, so confirm with your bank before remitting.

UIUC’s primary intake for Indian students is Fall (August) — most graduate programs open here, and the majority of scholarship review happens on the Fall cycle.

Insider note: Illinois does not run a single university-wide deadline. Programs inside Grainger Engineering, Gies Business, and the sciences each publish their own cut-offs, so Indian applicants targeting two programs must budget for two separate submissions and two application fees.

University of Illinois, Urbana Eligibility for Indian Students

Eligibility at Illinois is set by the Graduate College floor first and each department’s own bar on top of that. Indian applicants clear the base with a solid Bachelor’s from a UGC-recognised university and an accepted English test score. Selection then turns on your major GPA, prerequisite subjects, and program-specific scores. Illinois sits in a competitive ranking band (QS 74 in 2027, THE 41 in 2026), so program cut-offs frequently run above the institutional floor.

UIUC PG Eligibility for Indian Applicants

  • Bachelor’s floor: a four-year Bachelor’s from a UGC-recognised Indian university, generally at 62 to 65 percent (roughly a 3.0/4.0 GPA equivalent).
  • Three-year Bachelor’s: accepted case-by-case, but most engineering and CS departments require four years, so BSc / BCom candidates often need a Master’s for parity.
  • Major GPA: Grainger CS and ECE typically look for 3.3+/4.0 in core computing or engineering courses.
  • GRE: optional at most departments for Fall 2027; a competitive score (325+) still helps borderline files.
  • Work experience: not mandatory for MS or MEng, but preferred for Gies MS Management and Business Analytics.

UIUC UG Eligibility for Indian Applicants

  • Class XII at 85 percent or above from CBSE, ISC, or a recognised state board.
  • Mathematics studied through Class XII, mandatory for Grainger Engineering, CS, Physics, and quantitative business majors.
  • SAT or ACT is test-optional through Fall 2027; submitting a strong score (SAT 1450+) still adds weight for competitive majors.

UIUC English Language Requirements

Illinois uses a two-tier English system. A limited admission score lets you enrol but caps assistantship eligibility and requires an on-campus English placement test. A full admission score removes those caps.

University of Illinois, Urbana IELTS Waiver for Indian Students

Illinois waives the English test if the applicant’s Bachelor’s or Master’s was completed in an approved English-medium country or in a country where English is the official language. Indian applicants who studied their entire Bachelor’s in English medium at a UGC-recognised institution can request a waiver via the Graduate College, subject to departmental sign-off. Waivers are not automatic and Grainger CS regularly declines them, so plan to sit IELTS or TOEFL unless a department has confirmed the exemption in writing.

Note: Program-specific entry requirements, fees, and intake availability may differ from the institution-wide minimums shown above. Always confirm on the official University of Illinois, Urbana page for your chosen program before applying.

University of Illinois, Urbana PG Programs and English Scores

Illinois offers over 100 graduate programs across Grainger Engineering, the Siebel School of Computing and Data Science, Gies College of Business, and the sciences. Base tuition for the 2026-27 academic year sits at USD 32,204 (around INR 30.43 Lakhs) for most graduate programs, and USD 40,444 (around INR 38.22 Lakhs) for Grainger Engineering programs. For the full year-by-year total including differential fees, see the detailed fee breakdown.

Planning note: Gies business programs sit above the Graduate College English floor. Indian applicants targeting MS Business Analytics or MS Management should plan for IELTS 7.0 or TOEFL 102, not the base 6.5 or 79.

University of Illinois, Urbana UG Programs for Indian Students

Illinois undergraduate admissions run through a single university-wide application via Common Application or the myIllini portal, and Indian applicants apply to a specific major. Grainger Engineering, Gies Business, and Computer Science are the most competitive divisions and admit well below the institutional acceptance rate. Base undergraduate tuition for international students runs higher than the graduate figure, and the USD 75 (around INR 7,088) application fee is paid at Common App or myIllini submission.

ProgrammeDurationMinimum EligibilityEnglish Req. Min.
BS Computer Science (Grainger)4 yearsClass XII at 90%+, Mathematics through Class XII, strong CS aptitudeIELTS 6.5 or TOEFL 79 iBT

BS Aerospace Engineering (Grainger)4 yearsClass XII at 88%+, Physics and Mathematics through Class XIIIELTS 6.5 or TOEFL 79 iBT

Insider note: BS Computer Science inside Grainger has the highest bar of any UIUC undergraduate major and admits roughly one in ten international applicants, so a Class XII of 90 percent plus strong olympiad or coding evidence is closer to the working floor than the published 85 percent.

University of Illinois, Urbana MBA Admissions

Gies College of Business suspended its on-campus full-time MBA in 2019 and no longer admits new students to it. Indian applicants seeking an Illinois MBA now have only the online iMBA route, which does not carry an F-1 student visa and is not an on-campus study-abroad option. Full-time on-campus alternatives for Indian applicants targeting Illinois are the Gies specialised master’s programs (MS Business Analytics, MS Management, MS Financial Engineering, MAS Accounting Science).

UIUC iMBA (Online) Admissions Snapshot

  • Format: fully online, delivered through Coursera and the Gies platform, cohort-based intakes multiple times a year.
  • Total program cost: USD 27,000 (around INR 25.52 Lakhs), or USD 375 (around INR 35,438) per credit hour.
  • Eligibility: Bachelor’s from an accredited institution, professional work experience preferred, no GMAT or GRE required.
  • Application fee: USD 90 (around INR 8,505).
  • Visa: not applicable, students remain in India while enrolled.

Reality check: If your goal is an F-1 visa on-campus MBA at Illinois, that pathway is closed. Indian applicants comparing options should look at Gies MS Business Analytics or MS Management, or apply to a different US B-school for a residential MBA.

Note: Program-specific entry requirements, fees, and intake availability may differ from the institution-wide minimums shown above. Always confirm on the official University of Illinois, Urbana page for your chosen program before applying.

University of Illinois, Urbana PhD Admissions

Illinois runs research-heavy PhD programs across engineering, the Siebel School of Computing and Data Science, sciences, humanities, and social sciences. Admits are department-driven, funding-linked, and typically limited to applicants who match a specific faculty member’s research agenda.

UIUC PhD Application Timeline

  • Fall 2027 deadline for CS PhD: 1 December 2026, hard cut-off, no late applications.
  • Application fee: USD 90 (around INR 8,505) per department.
  • Faculty match: Indian applicants should identify two to three potential advisors and address them in the statement of purpose.
  • English scores: the Graduate College floor applies (IELTS 6.5 or TOEFL 79 for limited status), but most PhD departments prefer full-status scores.

UIUC PhD Funding for Indian Students

Most admitted PhD students receive a full five-year funding package combining a tuition waiver with either a Graduate Assistantship (research or teaching) or a fellowship. Stipends for 2026-27 typically fall between USD 22,000 and USD 32,000 (around INR 20.79 to 30.24 Lakhs) per academic year depending on the department, with health insurance included. For institution-wide awards and India-specific top-ups, see the funding options for Indian students.

Note: Program-specific entry requirements, fees, and intake availability may differ from the institution-wide minimums shown above. Always confirm on the official University of Illinois, Urbana page for your chosen program before applying.

University of Illinois, Urbana Application Process

Illinois runs a two-track application system: undergraduate applicants use the Common Application or the myIllini portal, and graduate applicants use the UIUC Graduate College online application. Both are self-service portals — there is no state-wide central platform like the UC system in California.

  1. Create your account: UG applicants open a Common Application or myIllini account; PG applicants open a Graduate College application on the UIUC portal.
  2. Select your program and intake: pick one primary program per submission; each additional program is a separate application and a separate fee.
  3. Upload academic documents: Class XII marksheet for UG, Bachelor’s marksheets and degree certificate for PG, both as unofficial scans at application stage.
  4. Add English test and standardised test scores: report IELTS, TOEFL, or Duolingo; report SAT, ACT, GRE, or GMAT if the program lists it.
  5. Upload SOP, CV, and letters of recommendation: most PG departments require three LORs and a 500 to 1,000 word statement of purpose.
  6. Pay the application fee of USD 90 (around INR 8,505) for graduate applications or USD 75 (around INR 7,088) for undergraduate applications on the UIUC Graduate College portal or Common App.
  7. Submit and track: log in weekly for department requests; some departments run video-response or interview stages after the initial screen.

Insider note: Grainger and Gies departments read files quickly after the deadline, but final decisions can arrive as late as March or April. Keep your portal notifications on and do not chase a status update before mid-February.

University of Illinois, Urbana Admission Decisions and Offer Timeline

Decisions at Illinois arrive on a rolling basis after the application deadline, and Indian applicants should plan for a wait of six to sixteen weeks between submission and outcome. Understanding the sequence helps you time visa steps, deposits, and I-20 issuance.

  • Undergraduate Early Action decisions: released by end January 2027 for applicants who met the 1 November 2026 deadline.
  • Undergraduate Regular Decision: decisions released between February and March 2027; final reply deadline is 1 May 2027.
  • Graduate decisions: most departments release outcomes between mid-February and end April 2027 for Fall 2027 applicants.
  • Offer letter and I-20: admitted students receive the offer via the portal, followed by the I-20 form (needed for F-1 visa) after tuition deposit or financial documents are cleared.
  • Acceptance deposit: confirms your seat; deposit deadlines vary by program, most fall between April and May 2027.
  • Deferral: Illinois allows one-semester or one-year deferrals in genuine cases (medical, visa delay, financial), reviewed department-by-department.

Planning note: Book your Chennai, Mumbai, or Delhi US consulate F-1 visa slot the same week your I-20 arrives. Peak Fall 2027 slot availability tightens fastest between April and June 2027.

Documents Required for University of Illinois, Urbana

Illinois asks for the same document set as most US graduate schools, plus a couple of India-specific items. All documents are uploaded as PDFs at application; official versions are only sent after admission. This section covers paperwork; academic thresholds and test scores are in the Eligibility section above.

Documents Required for UIUC Graduate Applications

  • Passport bio page (colour scan, valid for the duration of study).
  • Bachelor’s transcripts from every institution attended, on the university letterhead.
  • Bachelor’s degree certificate or a provisional certificate if final degree is pending.
  • Class XII marksheet (frequently requested by Grainger and Gies).
  • Statement of Purpose (SOP): 500 to 1,000 words, program-specific.
  • Three Letters of Recommendation (LORs): sent electronically via the portal.
  • Resume or CV: up to two pages, with any research, internships, and publications.
  • Official English test score report: IELTS, TOEFL, or Duolingo, sent from the testing agency.
  • GRE or GMAT score report if the program lists it (many are optional for Fall 2027).
  • Financial documents: bank statement or affidavit covering the first year’s cost, needed after admission for the I-20.
  • WES or ECE evaluation: some departments request a credential evaluation; check the department page.

University of Illinois, Urbana Acceptance Rate for Indian Students

Illinois’ institutional acceptance rate sits at around 36.6 percent, based on the most recent applicant pool figures, and does not distinguish domestic from international outcomes at the aggregate level. The number is a useful anchor but hides wide variation by department: Grainger CS and Gies MS Business Analytics run visibly below the average, while sciences and humanities departments run visibly above it.

UIUC Acceptance Rate by Program

  • Grainger Computer Science (MS and PhD): estimated 10 to 15 percent for international applicants, one of the tightest CS admits in the US public system.
  • Grainger Electrical and Computer Engineering: estimated 20 to 25 percent for international MS applicants.
  • Gies MS Business Analytics: estimated 15 to 20 percent, GMAT / GRE strengthens the file.
  • Other Gies specialised master’s: estimated 30 to 40 percent.
  • Sciences and humanities: estimated 40 to 55 percent, closer to the institutional average.

What Improves Your UIUC Admission Odds

Indian applicants who convert the highest at Illinois show three markers: a strong major GPA (3.3+/4.0 for CS and engineering), a statement that names one or two Illinois faculty and their research, and full-status English scores (IELTS 7.5 or TOEFL 103) rather than the limited-status floor. A GRE score of 325+ still moves the needle at Grainger CS even though the requirement is technically optional.

Insider note: Illinois does not publish an official department-level acceptance rate. The ranges above are estimates based on competitive-intake patterns and Common Data Set figures. Use them as directional guidance, not a fixed cut-off.

USA F-1 Student Visa Process for Indian Students

Indian students admitted to a full-time on-campus program at Illinois need the F-1 student visa. Illinois issues the I-20 form once the acceptance deposit and financial documents are cleared; the I-20 is the base document for the F-1 application. Pay the SEVIS fee, book a DS-160 slot at the US consulate in New Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkata, or Hyderabad, and prepare for a short in-person interview. Expect to show funds covering the first year (tuition plus around USD 20,000 for living costs), your I-20, admission letter, academic transcripts, English scores, and evidence of ties to India. Post-arrival, register with the international student office at the University YMCA International Student Support desk within the first two weeks.

US visa policy allows 12 months of Optional Practical Training (OPT) after graduation, extended by 24 months for STEM-designated programs. Most Grainger, Siebel School, and Gies quantitative master’s degrees at Illinois qualify for the STEM OPT extension, giving Indian STEM graduates up to 36 months of post-study work authorisation in the US.

2026 update: The US visa interview waiver (dropbox) programme has narrowed since late 2025, so most first-time F-1 applicants from India must plan for an in-person appointment. Book the slot the same week your I-20 arrives; summer 2027 slots tend to fill by early May.

Tips and Application Checklist for University of Illinois, Urbana

The following tips and steps are drawn from Indian-applicant patterns at UIUC and reflect the specific pain points inside the Illinois application system.

  • Aim for full-status English: IELTS 7.5 or TOEFL 103 removes assistantship caps and simplifies your file at Grainger CS, ECE, and Gies. Book the test 10 to 12 weeks before your first program deadline.
  • Request academic transcripts eight weeks before deadline: Indian university offices often take four to six weeks to issue attested transcripts; a buffer prevents last-week panic.
  • Address specific faculty in your SOP: Illinois departments read PhD and MS-thesis SOPs for research fit. Name one or two professors and their most recent work.
  • Register LOR writers on the portal in October: automated reminders are sent from Illinois, and early registration avoids November clashes with your recommenders’ own end-semester load.
  • Budget for two application fees minimum: most Indian applicants apply to CS plus one back-up like ECE or Information Management; two USD 90 fees (around INR 17,010) is standard.
  • Do not pay the acceptance deposit until you have compared offers: Illinois’ deposit deadlines run to April or May, giving you time to weigh scholarship offers from other US universities.
  • Order your WES / ECE evaluation four weeks before the deposit: a few Illinois departments request it, and courier lead time from India is two to three weeks.
  • Complete the SEVIS fee payment and DS-160 within one week of I-20 receipt: visa slot competition in Indian consulates peaks between April and June.

Popular Indian applicant destinations at Illinois are MS Computer Science (Siebel School), MEng and MS Electrical and Computer Engineering (Grainger), MS Business Analytics (Gies), and MS Financial Engineering (Gies). Together, these five programs account for the majority of Indian PG admits each year.

The Fall 2027 window is the deciding cycle for most Indian applicants targeting Illinois: file by December 1 for CS and Chemistry, by mid-December for Geography and GIS, and by mid-February for Civil Engineering. Undergraduate applicants should target Early Action for the strongest scholarship consideration. Confirm your program-specific fees and departmental deposits before the deposit deadline via the university portal.

University of Illinois, Urbana Admissions: Frequently Asked Questions

Ans. The UIUC Graduate College portal and Common Application for UIUC are open now for Fall 2027 intake. The nearest actionable deadline is 1 December 2026 for MS and PhD Computer Science, Chemistry, and several other Grainger and science departments.

Ques. What is the minimum IELTS score for a master’s at UIUC?

Ans. The Graduate College floor is IELTS 6.5 for limited admission and 7.5 for full admission. TOEFL iBT equivalents are 79 and 103. Gies business master’s programs typically expect IELTS 7.0 or TOEFL 102, above the base floor.

Ques. Does UIUC accept a three-year Indian Bachelor’s for PG admission?

Ans. Case-by-case. Most Grainger Engineering and Siebel School Computer Science programs require a four-year Bachelor’s. Three-year Bachelor’s holders (BSc, BCom) usually need a Master’s degree from a UGC-recognised institution for parity.

Ques. Is GRE required for MS Computer Science at UIUC in Fall 2027?

Ans. GRE is optional for MS Computer Science at UIUC for Fall 2027. Submitting a competitive score (325+) still strengthens borderline files, and PhD applicants are still expected to submit GRE where the department requests it.

Ques. What is the UIUC application fee for Indian graduate students?

Ans. USD 90 (around INR 8,505) per graduate program, paid on the UIUC Graduate College portal. Each additional program is a separate application and a separate fee. Undergraduate international applicants pay USD 75 (around INR 7,088) via Common App or myIllini.

Ques. Can I apply to UIUC’s on-campus full-time MBA?

Ans. No. Gies College of Business suspended its on-campus full-time MBA in 2019 and no longer admits students to it. The only Gies MBA route is the online iMBA (USD 27,000 total, around INR 25.52 Lakhs), which does not carry an F-1 student visa.

Ques. Does UIUC waive the English test for Indian applicants?

Ans. Waivers are considered when the Bachelor’s or Master’s was completed in an approved English-medium country, or in a country where English is the official language. Grainger CS regularly declines Indian applicant waivers, so plan to sit IELTS or TOEFL unless a department has confirmed the exemption in writing.

Ques. What is the acceptance rate at UIUC for Indian applicants?

Ans. UIUC’s institution-wide acceptance rate is around 36.6 percent. Grainger Computer Science (MS and PhD) runs much tighter, estimated at 10 to 15 percent for international applicants. UIUC does not publish an official department-level acceptance rate.

Ques. When will I receive my admission decision from UIUC for Fall 2027?

Ans. Most graduate departments release Fall 2027 decisions between mid-February and end April 2027. Undergraduate Early Action decisions arrive by end January 2027, and Regular Decision follows in February and March 2027.

Ques. Does UIUC accept the PTE Academic test?

Ans. PTE Academic is not listed on the UIUC Graduate College page of accepted English tests. Indian applicants should plan for IELTS, TOEFL iBT, or the Duolingo English Test, all of which are recognised.

Ques. Can I defer my UIUC admission by one semester or one year?

Ans. Yes, in genuine cases (medical, visa delay, financial hardship). Deferral requests are reviewed by the department and are more commonly granted to Master’s admits than PhD admits. Submit the request as soon as the reason arises.

Ques. Do UIUC STEM master’s degrees qualify for the 36-month OPT extension?

Ans. Most Grainger Engineering, Siebel School of Computing and Data Science, and Gies quantitative master’s (MS Business Analytics, MS Financial Engineering) are STEM-designated and qualify Indian graduates for the 24-month STEM OPT extension on top of the initial 12-month OPT.

Scholarship

  • I did not receive any scholarships or financial aid. It is not very common for the Stats department. In fact scholarships for international students in the US are rare, in general.
  • You can get your tuition waved off for certain courses, if you get some assistantship positions. For certain programs, it is a requirement for all grad students, but that is not the norm.

It is a tedious task. Had to compare a lot of colleges. Checked college ratings, their syllabus, cost, tuition fees etc. It required lots of hours to commit in order to shortlist and finalize a university.

Scholarship

I got awarded a Teaching Assistantship where my entire tuition fees was completely waived off and I was getting a stipend of 2598 every month which covered my monthly living expenses like housing, food, utilities etc.
