Planning note: Early Decision is binding at Brown. Indian applicants comparing multiple Ivy offers should apply ED only if Brown is a clear first choice and family finances allow enrollment without competing aid offers.
Brown University Eligibility for Indian Students
Brown does not publish country-specific cut-offs. It reviews holistically against the strongest peers in each applicant pool. Indian applicants should treat the numbers below as competitive floors, not guarantees, since Brown’s Ivy League selectivity means academic thresholds are only one part of the decision.
Undergraduate eligibility for Indian applicants
- Class XII: Board scores near 90 percent or above across the core five subjects.
- Standardised tests: SAT or ACT required from the 2024-25 cycle onward, superscored, no minimum.
- English proficiency: TOEFL iBT 105, IELTS 8.0, Duolingo 130, or PTE Academic.
- Subject prep: Four years each of English and Mathematics through Class XII, plus science and social studies.
Brown University IELTS Waiver for Indian Students
Brown waives the English proficiency test for undergraduate applicants whose primary language of instruction through the full duration of secondary school was English. Indian applicants from English-medium CBSE, ICSE, IB, or state-board schools qualify if the school confirms English as the sole language of instruction. Applicants from bilingual streams should still submit a test to avoid an admissions delay.
Postgraduate eligibility for Indian applicants
- Bachelor’s degree: Four-year or three-year Indian bachelor’s, 3.0 GPA equivalent (around 65 to 70 percent).
- Programme fit: Subject prerequisites in the target discipline (CS for MS CS, ChemE for MS ChemE).
- English proficiency: TOEFL iBT 90, IELTS 7.0 overall. Some departments set higher floors.
- Standardised tests: GRE optional for most programs; check department page.
Graduate applicants from Indian universities where English is not officially the medium of instruction cannot skip TOEFL or IELTS unless the university registrar issues written confirmation of English-medium teaching.
Brown University PG Programs and English Requirements
Brown offers Masters and PhD tracks across engineering, computing, public health, economics, and the humanities. Graduate tuition varies by program and academic year. Indian applicants pay identical tuition to US-domestic students, since Brown is a private institution with no state-resident distinction. Base tuition figures live on the Fees page.

Insider note: The MS Data Science program at Brown is one of the earliest DSI-branded programs in the Ivy League and remains popular with Indian engineering graduates.
Note: Program-specific entry requirements, fees, and intake availability may differ from the institution-wide minimums shown above. Always confirm on the official Brown Graduate School page for your chosen program before applying.
Brown University UG Admission Requirements for Indian Students
Brown’s undergraduate model is the Open Curriculum, which means first-year applicants do not apply to a specific major and can build their four years across nearly 80 concentrations. Undergraduate base tuition for 2026-27 is USD 74,568 (around INR 70.47 Lakhs); consult the course-wise fees breakdown for concentration-level cost detail.
| Programme | Duration | Minimum Eligibility | English Req. Min. |
|---|---|---|---|
| AB or ScB (Open Curriculum, ~80 concentrations) | 4 years | Class XII near 90%+ with SAT or ACT | IELTS 8.0 / TOEFL 105 |
| Program in Liberal Medical Education (PLME) | 8 years | Class XII 90%+, strong sciences, additional PLME essays | IELTS 8.0 / TOEFL 105 |
| Brown-RISD Dual Degree (BRDD) | 5 years | Class XII 90%+, plus RISD portfolio review | IELTS 8.0 / TOEFL 105 |
First-year international applicants must submit either an SAT or ACT score. Brown superscores across sittings and considers scores in the context of applicant background. Board scores are read on their reported 100-scale, without a WES conversion.
Brown University IE Executive MBA Admissions
Brown does not offer a full-time MBA. The only MBA-badged option is the IE Brown Executive MBA, a joint program with IE Business School in Madrid. It is a 15-month executive format aimed at working professionals with strong career trajectories, taught across four residential periods in Providence, Madrid, and online.
IE Brown Executive MBA eligibility
- Work experience: Minimum 8 years of professional experience, with clear management or leadership responsibility.
- Bachelor’s degree: Any discipline; equivalent professional qualification considered.
- English proficiency: Full fluency required; TOEFL or IELTS if instruction language was not English.
- Interview: Individual admissions interview after application review.
IE Brown Executive MBA cycle
The next intake starts Summer 2027. Applications close 15 February 2027. Application fee is USD 75 (around INR 7,088), paid through the IE Brown portal. GMAT or GRE is not typically required, though strong scores can strengthen borderline profiles.
Note: Program-specific entry requirements, fees, and intake availability may differ from the institution-wide minimums shown above. Always confirm on the official IE Brown Executive MBA page before applying.
Brown University PhD Admissions and Deadlines
Brown’s PhD portfolio spans engineering, sciences, economics, mathematics, public health, and humanities. Most PhD programs open on 8 September 2026 for the Fall 2027 intake, with deadlines clustered between mid-November and early January.

PhD funding and stipend
Brown funds admitted PhD students through the Graduate School’s five-year support package, which typically covers full tuition, health fees, and an annual stipend. Indian applicants do not pay tuition once admitted and enrolled. Applicants should confirm the current stipend on their department’s funding page before accepting an offer.
Insider note: Contacting a specific faculty member before submission is standard in PhD applications and can meaningfully improve chances, particularly in labs where a PI has open funding.

Brown University Acceptance Rate for Indian Students
Brown reported a 5.65 percent overall acceptance rate for the Fall 2025 first-year class, one of the lowest in the Ivy League and only marginally above Harvard, Yale, and Columbia in the same cycle. Brown does not publish a separate acceptance rate for Indian applicants, but international admits typically clear a higher academic bar than the domestic pool.
What the Brown acceptance rate means for Indian applicants
The international admit rate at Ivy League universities is estimated to sit in the 4 to 5 percent band, based on published international enrollment numbers versus reported international application volumes across recent cycles. Brown’s ranking band and Open Curriculum draw a highly self-selecting Indian applicant pool.
What strengthens an Indian applicant profile
- Rigor over marks: AP, IB, or A-Level coursework signals readiness for Brown’s Open Curriculum.
- Depth of activity: Two or three sustained pursuits beat a long list of surface commitments.
- Distinct Brown fit: Essays that name specific concentrations, faculty, or courses read as informed applications.
Insider note: Brown reads international transcripts against the reported grading scale rather than converting to a 4.0 GPA, so a strong Class XII percentage in the 92 to 98 band lands more clearly than a translated GPA.
USA Student Visa for Brown University Admits
Indian students admitted to Brown apply for the F-1 student visa. Brown issues the Form I-20 once the enrollment deposit is paid, and the applicant then pays the SEVIS I-901 fee, completes the DS-160, and books a visa interview at a US consulate. See the CD F-1 visa guide for the step-by-step process.
Financial proof for the F-1 must cover the first year of tuition and living costs. Applicants show liquid bank balances, education loans sanctioned by a scheduled bank, or a sponsor affidavit with source-of-funds documentation. After arrival, Indian students report to the Office of International Student and Scholar Services within 30 days for SEVIS validation. The F-1 permits 12 months of OPT post-graduation, extended to 36 months total for STEM-designated majors.
2026 update: US consulates in India continue to prioritise student visa slots between April and July for Fall intakes. Book the interview within a week of receiving the I-20 to avoid the summer bottleneck.
Tips and Application Checklist for Brown University Admissions
The following tips and steps are drawn from Indian-applicant patterns at Brown across recent cycles. They cover sequencing, prioritisation, and the small decisions that separate strong applications from average ones.
- Choose ED with intent: Apply Early Decision only if Brown is the clear top choice and aid needs are known upfront.
- Write specific Brown supplements: Name concentrations, courses, and faculty rather than generic Ivy language.
- Book SAT or ACT by August 2026: Leaves room for one retake before the November ED deadline.
- Request transcripts 8 weeks before deadline: Indian schools often need weeks to issue official documents.
- Line up recommenders by September 2026: Give teachers a full activity sheet and target-list context.
- Lock TOEFL or IELTS by October 2026: Scores need two to four weeks to reach the university.
- Confirm PLME or BRDD interest early: Both need extra essays and portfolio submissions with tighter windows.
- Save proof of every fee payment: Brown asks for confirmation numbers on the applicant portal.
Brown rewards Indian applicants who marry strong Class XII academics with a clearly articulated fit for the Open Curriculum, and who move on documentation and testing well before the November and January deadlines. Move fast on ED if Brown is your top pick; otherwise use the RD window to build a sharper application.

- Professors are little too strict in terms of American education practices
- There’s only one college bar in the whole campus
Scholarship
- There’s scholarship for previous entrepreneurship achievements. If you have founded or cofounder a startup then you are eligible for the scholarship for the Brown Prime Program, which I completed. I received 5000$ scholarship, other students have received more around 15% at most.
- There were some 5-10 students approx who received some amount of scholarship and total there were 3 sections of 90 students in the cohort.

Overview
For the Prestige, and the good education of an Ivy League institution as well as higher chances of getting into a good medical school later on in life. They also gave me a fairly good financial aid package.
