University of Iowa Admission 2027
The University of Iowa runs two main intakes each year, Fall in August and Spring in January. Most Indian applicants target Fall because scholarship rounds, teaching assistantships and orientation timing align with that cycle.
| Milestone | Date | Notes for Indian Applicants |
|---|---|---|
| Spring 2027 international UG deadline (Liberal Arts, Education, Engineering, Public Health) | 16 November 2026 | Business, Nursing and Pharmacy do not accept Spring international admission |
| Fall 2027 international UG deadline (most colleges) | 3 May 2027 | Business closes 1 March 2027; Pharmacy 2 February 2027; Nursing 2 November 2026 |
| Fall 2027 PG deadlines (varies by department) | 1 December 2026 to 1 April 2027 | Computer Science closes 1 January 2027; Engineering departments 15 December 2026 to 1 April 2027 |
| Credential verification (WES ICAP) | Start 6 to 8 weeks before deadline | Course-by-course evaluation required for most graduate departments |
| Programme start (Fall 2027) | August 2027 | International student orientation runs the week before classes |
[Source: University of Iowa International Admissions and Graduate College]
Planning note: Per-department deadlines override the general graduate timeline. Verify with your target department before finalising WES timing, since ICAP evaluation adds two to four weeks to your prep window and cannot be rushed the week before submission.

University of Iowa Admission Requirements for Indian Applicants 2027
PG applicants need a four-year bachelor’s degree recognised by the University of Iowa Graduate College, submitted through the online application with credential verification.
Postgraduate (PG) requirements:
- Four-year bachelor’s degree with minimum 3.0 GPA on a 4.0 scale, equivalent to 60% or CGPA 6.0/10 (recommended) at Indian universities
- English test: TOEFL iBT 81 (pre-January 2026 scale) or 4.5 (post-January 2026 on the 1-6 band scale); IELTS 7.0 overall with no band below 6.0; PTE 68 with no subscore below 58; Duolingo (DET) 120
- Course-by-course credential evaluation via WES ICAP required by most departments
- GRE required for most engineering and science departments; GMAT for the Iowa MBA (waivable case by case)
Undergraduate (UG) requirements:
- Class 12 completion from a recognised Indian board with 80% to 85% (recommended) marks, stronger for direct-entry Business and Nursing
- English test: TOEFL iBT 80 or 4.5, IELTS 6.5, Duolingo 105 or PTE 55
- SAT or ACT not required for admission but recommended for merit scholarship consideration
Key insight: The University of Iowa does not accept TOEFL MyBest Superscore or IELTS One Skill Retake for admission. Submit one full test result at or above the published threshold for your target programme, since patchwork scores from multiple sittings will not clear the graduate proficiency gate.
University of Iowa Acceptance Rate 2027
The University of Iowa reports an overall admit rate of 85%, one of the more accessible among Big Ten universities. The international admit rate stands at 44%, reflecting stricter document, financial and language checks applied to overseas files.
| Applicant Pool | Acceptance Rate | Trend |
|---|---|---|
| Overall (all applicants) | 85% | Stable across last three cycles |
| International applicants | 44% | Selective, gated by TOEFL/IELTS and WES |
[Source: University of Iowa Office of Admissions disclosures]
The overall rate reflects strong in-state demand and stable graduate cohorts. Indian applicants should read the 44% international rate as the operational benchmark, since it prices in language, credential and financial documentation checks not applied to domestic files.
Reality check: A high headline rate does not lower academic scrutiny. WES verification, TOEFL or IELTS minimums and financial affidavit thresholds are hard gates enforced before your file reaches an admissions reader, so treat those as day-one priorities.

Insider note: Iowa City sits within easy reach of Chicago and Minneapolis employer hubs, but Indian graduates targeting large-tech placement typically travel for interviews. Start recruiting activity in your first semester rather than after graduation.

UIowa stands out in the peer set on writing, health sciences and dentistry rather than engineering scale. For Indian applicants weighing tuition against ROI, UIowa’s lower-cost living base in Iowa City partly offsets its lower global rank compared with Purdue and UIUC.
The University of Iowa fits Indian applicants who want a public research university with credible US News Best Global standing, low cost-of-living, and STEM OPT eligibility on eligible masters degrees. On a total investment of roughly ₹75 lakh across two years against a market median MS Business Analytics salary near ₹80 lakh, the ROI window closes within two to three post-OPT years for funded and semi-funded candidates.
UIowa is not the right pick if you need top-50 QS brand equity for India-return roles or a large Indian alumni employer network like UIUC or Purdue. Consider Purdue University for engineering-first applicants who want a stronger recruiter base and a similar public-university cost profile.
University of Iowa FAQs
Ques. Does the University of Iowa require GRE for MS admissions?
Ans. Most engineering and science departments at the University of Iowa require GRE scores for MS admission, while business masters at Tippie may accept GMAT instead. Departments including Computer Science, Mechanical Engineering and Physics list a strong GRE recommendation. Programmes in creative writing, public health and select professional masters have waived the GRE. Confirm on your target department’s admissions page before booking a test date.
Ques. How long is OPT for STEM graduates at UIowa?
Ans. Indian graduates of STEM-designated masters programmes at the University of Iowa qualify for 12 months of standard OPT plus a 24-month STEM OPT extension, giving up to 36 months of post-degree work in the United States. Ques. Can Indian students work part-time at the University of Iowa?
Ans. Yes. F-1 international students at UIowa may work up to 20 hours per week on campus during fall and spring terms, and full-time during summer and winter breaks. Off-campus work is not allowed in the first academic year. Curricular Practical Training (CPT) opens up in year two for internships tied to your degree, subject to departmental approval.
Ques. What documents does WES verification need for UIowa applications?
Ans. The University of Iowa Graduate College requires a WES ICAP course-by-course evaluation for most departments. Indian applicants submit sealed original transcripts and consolidated marksheets directly from their university to WES, plus the degree certificate. WES then delivers the electronic report to UIowa. Budget four to six weeks for the full evaluation, and start before you submit the application to avoid last-minute delays.
Ques. Does the University of Iowa waive IELTS for English-medium bachelor’s degrees?
Ans. The University of Iowa may waive the TOEFL or IELTS requirement for applicants who completed a full bachelor’s, masters or doctoral degree in the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, Australia and 28 other listed English-speaking countries. Indian applicants with English-medium instruction at Indian universities do not qualify for the waiver and must submit a valid TOEFL, IELTS, PTE or Duolingo score.
Ques. What is the application fee at the University of Iowa?
Ans. The University of Iowa charges a non-refundable application fee of $85 (₹8,133) for international graduate applicants and $50 (₹4,784) for domestic applicants. Undergraduate international applicants pay a $50 fee. Fee waivers are limited and typically require McNair Scholar status, US military service or similar documented eligibility, so Indian applicants should plan to pay the standard fee.
Ques. Which Indian banks offer education loans for UIowa?
Ans. State Bank of India, HDFC Credila, ICICI Bank, Axis Bank, Bank of Baroda and Avanse extend education loans for the University of Iowa across UG and PG programmes. Loan amounts typically cover full tuition and living costs up to ₹1.5 crore, with secured loans offering lower interest and longer repayment. UIowa’s I-20 issuance accepts sanction letters from any recognised Indian scheduled bank or NBFC.
Ques. Are conditional offers available at the University of Iowa?
Ans. Yes. The University of Iowa issues conditional admission to Indian applicants who meet all academic requirements but fall short of the English proficiency minimum. Conditional admits must complete the Iowa Intensive English Program (IIEP) before starting degree coursework. The conditional offer names both the intensive-English pathway and the degree programme, letting you apply for the F-1 visa on the same I-20.

Overview
University of Iowa is one of the best college in US for international students in US. We have 2nd best writing program in country which allows us to get the reviews and feedback in our writing material from the best.
Campus Life
A lot of campus activities to do, Iowa City is known for the best college town so that says it all.
Overview
It is a public university with a good research background. Especially in healthcare, which matched my experience. Preparation: Self-taught for exams. But I had joined Imperial overseas education for other consultation.
Campus Life
Great campus atmosphere. It is a college town so there are mostly just students all around. Downtown gets lively on weekends.
Overview
It is one of the best and most affordable universities for computer science in the United States.
Fees
30000$, USD
Overview
A lot of my friends were going, so I knew I would have roomates I knew and trusted. I liked how many different classes and majors there were too! I also heard that it was a friendly environment and had heard many great things about it! When I toured it, I saw how much I would love being here. It's such a nice place
Fees
Over all I'm paying around 14,000 for both semesters, or one year. That's with my dorm, and meal plan. It's not as bad as many, but the scholarships are mainly for students who have gone here for a few years, making it hard to get them. The Tuition isn't the problem- it's the high meal plan and housing, the parking, etc.
Overview
The nursing program was ranked highly I wanted a big university I wanted to be apart of Greek life and it was instated for me and offered me scholarships that made going here incredibly reasonable. I also love the campus/downtown area.
Fees
For the college of nursing, we have the nation students association fee applied every year. We also have technology and campus fees applied every year. Once you enter the nursing program you have a simulation fee to pay for the technology that comes with clinical.
Overview
It has a good reputation and the program has a high ranking by US News and World Report. Also, the professors are wonderful and they really want the students to succeed. The professors make sure that we are well prepared.
Fees
Students are required to pay the full semester tuition before the semester starts. This can be challenging because it is a lot of money to fork over at once. I have to rely on loans to finance my education.
Overview
It was a good program and I got a scholarship to attend the university. Student life is awesome as there is a lot of curricular and extracurricular activities. There are a lot of restaurants and bars by the university.
Fees
There are all sorts of fees. Student life and activities, for the Rec center, printing and obviously per credit hours. Tuition is based on a per credit basis. Essentially all those student fees get funneled to the student government who then plan events and disperse it to other student orgs who apply for funding for other events.
