USC Columbia Eligibility for Indian Students

USC Columbia weighs academic strength, English proficiency, and (optional for Fall 2027) SAT or ACT scores. Class XII at 65 percent is the general undergraduate floor; graduate seats need a Bachelor’s at around 3.0 GPA on a 4.0 scale, which maps to roughly 60 percent by Indian marking.

How competitive are USC Columbia’s academic floors?

  • UG general entry: Class XII at 65 percent with English as a subject.
  • UG competitive majors: engineering and Honors tracks target 75 percent and above.
  • PG general entry: four-year Bachelor’s (or three-year with a one-year PG diploma) at 3.0 GPA.
  • Moore MBA and Master’s: Bachelor’s with strong quantitative record, GMAT or GRE required.
  • Transcripts: course-by-course NACES evaluation for all graduate applicants.

USC Columbia English Language Requirements

The following institution-wide minimums apply to Indian applicants without a qualifying waiver.

TestUndergraduate MinimumGraduate Minimum

USC Columbia IELTS Waiver for Indian Students

Two waiver pathways apply. Graduate applicants who earned a Bachelor’s degree in a country where English is an official language may skip proficiency testing — India lists English as a co-official language and English-medium bachelor’s degrees can qualify, though Moore School reviews each case individually. Undergraduate applicants who completed Class XI and Class XII fully in an English-medium school should request written waiver confirmation from the Office of International Admissions before opting out.

South Carolina MBA at Darla Moore School

The Darla Moore School of Business runs three MBA variants for Indian applicants and holds a QS #75 world rank in International Trade for 2026. Applications close in rounds through the BusinessCAS portal, with an application fee of USD 108 (INR 10,305).

Moore School MBA Variants and Work Experience

  • International MBA (IMBA): 2 years, 2+ years work experience preferred, strong global-business focus with a language track.
  • One-Year MBA: 12 months, 2+ years work experience, accelerated general-management format.
  • Professional MBA: part-time and hybrid, 3+ years work experience, aimed at working professionals.

Moore School MBA Test and Interview Requirements

GMAT or GRE is required for all Moore graduate business admits, with no institution-wide minimum published. Shortlisted applicants attend a virtual interview covering career goals and quantitative fit. Interviews run rolling across each admission round.

Insider note: The IMBA’s Language and International Studies track requires business-level second-language proficiency by graduation, so Indian applicants with French, German, or Spanish study benefit at admission review.

University of South Carolina, Columbia PhD Programs

USC Columbia runs PhD programs across seven business concentrations, Economics, Computer Science, Chemistry, Public Health, and Education. Applications route through the USC Graduate School portal with the standard USD 50 (INR 4,771) fee, and the primary intake is Fall.

  • Funding: most PhD admits receive tuition remission plus a stipend of around USD 22,000 to USD 30,000 per year (INR 20.99 to 28.63 Lakhs) for the 2026-27 academic year, tied to teaching or research assistantships.
  • Application timeline: most PhD deadlines fall between 1 December 2026 and 15 January 2027 for Fall 2027 entry.
  • Research fit: applicants must name at least two faculty whose research aligns with the proposed project.

USC Columbia Application Process

The application sequence differs slightly for undergraduate and graduate applicants, but all Indian applicants complete their submission online. Decisions arrive by mid-December (Early Action UG), mid-February (Honors UG), mid-March (Regular UG), or rolling program-set windows for graduate programs.

  1. Create your portal account. Start on the Common Application or USC Application for undergraduates. Postgraduates start on the USC Graduate School portal, and Moore applicants on BusinessCAS. The Common App cycle opened 1 August 2026.
  2. Complete the application and pay the fee. Pay the application fee of USD 100 (INR 9,542) for UG, USD 50 (INR 4,771) for non-Moore graduate, or USD 108 (INR 10,305) for Moore graduate applications.
  3. Send credentials. Arrange for Class XII marksheets or a NACES evaluation of your Bachelor’s, official test scores from ETS or IELTS, and any recommendation letters.
  4. Track decisions. Log into the USC Admissions portal to see status updates. Undergraduate offers arrive in tiers; graduate offers arrive rolling.
  5. Accept your offer and pay the enrollment deposit. Undergraduates pay a USD 400 (INR 38,168) tuition deposit by 1 May 2027 to secure the seat.
  6. Receive your I-20 and start the F-1 visa process. USC issues the I-20 once you submit financial documents and the deposit.

South Carolina Documents Required

Indian applicants should collect the following paperwork before starting the application. Missing documents delay the file review and can push you into a later decision tier.

  • Passport: valid for at least six months beyond intended arrival, biodata page scan.
  • Academic transcripts: Class X, Class XII, Bachelor’s marksheets (graduate applicants), with NACES course-by-course evaluation for graduate applications.
  • Degree certificates: final and not provisional for postgraduate applicants.
  • English proficiency score report: sent directly from IELTS, ETS, PTE, or Duolingo (USC codes: TOEFL 5818, SAT 5818, ACT 3880).
  • Statement of Purpose: program-specific, usually 500 to 1,000 words.
  • Letters of Recommendation: two or three, from academic or professional referees, program-dependent.
  • Resume or CV: one to two pages covering education, work, and extracurriculars.
  • Financial documents: bank statement showing one year of tuition plus living costs, for the I-20.
  • GMAT or GRE score report: for Moore School graduate applications and select PhD programs.
  • Common App activities section or USC essay: required for freshman applicants.

USC Columbia Acceptance Rate

USC Columbia does not publish a separate international acceptance rate. The 2024-25 overall figure was around 60 percent, with 52,703 applicants and 31,701 admits. Out-of-state applicants — the pool Indian applicants sit in — saw closer to 52 percent, based on the university’s residency breakdown.

What drives an admit decision at USC Columbia?

  • Academic transcript strength: Class XII above 75 percent for competitive majors, 3.3 GPA and above for graduate seats.
  • Standardised scores: optional for Fall 2027 UG, but median admits carry SAT 1270 and ACT 28.
  • Programme fit: Statement of Purpose and research fit matter more at Moore and for PhD tracks.

Where does USC Columbia rank globally?

USC Columbia sits at QS World #711-720 for 2027, THE 401-500, and ARWU 401-500. Moore’s International Trade Master’s ranks #75 globally in the QS 2026 subject tables, which strengthens the case for competitive Moore admits. Read our student reviews and outcomes for peer feedback.

Insider note: Out-of-state and international admits face a tougher review than in-state applicants (71 percent admit rate) because the university caps international enrolment for federal reporting and campus-housing planning.

USA F-1 Visa Process for USC Columbia

Indian students admitted to USC Columbia apply for a USA F-1 student visa after receiving the I-20 form from the university. The process runs through the US Embassy or Consulate in India (Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkata, or Hyderabad) and takes four to eight weeks from I-20 receipt to visa stamp.

Start by paying the SEVIS I-901 fee of USD 350 (INR 33,397) on the FMJfee website. Then complete the DS-160 online non-immigrant visa form and pay the USD 185 (INR 17,653) machine-readable visa fee. Book biometric and consular interview slots at ustraveldocs.in. Carry your I-20, DS-160 confirmation, SEVIS receipt, passport, admission letter, financial documents (bank statement showing at least USD 45,000 or INR 42.94 Lakhs available for the first year), academic transcripts, and English test scores to the interview. After the visa stamp, register with USC’s International Student and Scholar Support office within two weeks of arrival and complete SEVIS check-in.

Planning note: F-1 slots at Indian consulates tighten between May and July 2027 as the Fall wave peaks. Book your consular interview within two weeks of receiving the I-20 to avoid a September arrival delay.

USC Columbia Admissions Tips and Checklist

The following tips and steps are drawn from Indian-applicant patterns at USC Columbia across the last three intake cycles, mixing insight-led guidance with a timeline-anchored action list.

  • Target Early Action: apply by 15 October 2026 to lock in a December decision and priority scholarship review.
  • Send scores through the testing service: USC does not accept applicant-uploaded copies of IELTS, TOEFL, or GRE score reports.
  • Request transcripts eight weeks before deadline: Indian university transcript offices often need lead time for sealed, attested copies.
  • Book the NACES evaluation early: WES and ECE take three to five weeks; graduate applicants should start by mid-September 2026.
  • Confirm Moore prerequisites: Business Analytics and Quantitative Economics look for Calculus and Statistics on your Bachelor’s transcript.
  • Write a program-specific SOP: tie your research or career interest to two named USC faculty or a specific course.
  • Prepare financial documents before offer: USC issues I-20 only after receiving bank certificates showing one year of costs.
  • Schedule the F-1 interview within two weeks: summer 2027 consular slots fill quickly across Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, and Hyderabad.

University of South Carolina, Columbia is a genuine option for Indian applicants who value a strong Moore School business programme, competitive engineering research, and a moderate acceptance rate. Applying under Early Action, sending scores through official channels, and starting the NACES and F-1 timeline early are the three moves that shape a smooth admit-to-arrival journey.

Overview

My entire family has graduated from the university of South Carolina. An experience, I will not forget it has been a true honor to attend the university of South Carolina, where both my biological father and stepfather uncle and many other family members have graduated from.

My experience, especially as a recent transfer student to my institution, has been swell. I personally enjoy the city and feel happier walking around campus because of its location. It provides a better sense of community and a lot more activities for people. There are also many opportunities for research that I think are great for students.

I received a Life scholarship from the state for 7,500 a year and an Engineering scholarship for 1000 a year.
