Course Curriculum

8

  • A mix of both theoretical and practical curricula, but the practical assignments are really tough. Please avoid ChatGPT copied answers; you can definitely understand the concepts from there, but write each word by yourself. Even ChatGPT's answers are not correct most of the time.
  • Positive aspect is I learned a lot hands-on for building, training models in Courses like Deep learning, NLP, Machine learning, and Artificial Intelligence.
  • Negative aspect is the mental and physical health. It is quite exhausting to solve assignments and prepare for exams.
  • There would be mostly 1 and sometimes 2 classes in a day. Timings are between 8 AM to 8 PM CT.
  • There are 70-150 students in each class on average. Most students are in the popular courses and easy 4 pointers.
  • There are mostly 80-90% indian students in master's graduate courses.

Admission Experience

  • Rejected from the following colleges-
    • SUNY Buffalo
    • Northeastern University (Boston)
    • Boston University
    • San Jose State University
  • Accepted these colleges-
    • Illinois Institute of Technology (Confirmed admissions)
    • Pace University(Confirmed admissions)
    • University of Bridgeport(Confirmed admissions)
    • Lawrence Technological University(Confirmed admissions)
    • DePaul University(Confirmed admissions)
    • University of New Haven
    • Long Island University
  • A possible reason for rejection is because higher competition. There is no other reason I can think of.
  • IIT College is in Chicago City (my preference), and the professor's research area resonates with my research interests. They give lots of scholarships and a big indian community, and on a lighter note, the name gives me a feel of Indian Institute of Technology :). Lol!.
  • I applied there by requesting an application fee waiver. The admission coordinator was prompt. I got my queries cleared, filled all the forms required by the college, and got acceptance within 21 days. You just need to pay a 300$ confirmation fee. The college also organised an orientation in my home city, Kolkata itself, and that was just for 4 incoming students.
  • IELTS 6.0 and above, NO GRE, GMAT, SAT bar constraints, relevant bachelor's courses, and a good SOP, that's what you need. Please mention the accepted exams (e.g., SAT, GMAT, IELTS) and the minimum scores required for each.
  • The admission Process was really smooth. As I mentioned, the admission coordinator and the grad admission office helped me with each query. Student health ensured, I'm all vaccinated. The academic advisor guided me on the best courses I should enroll in each semester. Professors cleared doubts in their office hours.
  • The only challenges are the problems given in the assignments, oh, they are so top-notch and grinding.
  • I applied to the 2023 Fall intake. As I mentioned, I have a connection with Chicago as my client during my office days was from here. I get the best research professors who match my interest area.
    • Dec 7th- Requested Application waiver.
    • Dec 12th - Application waiver request approved.
    • Dec 21st - Applied
    • Jan 21st- Got acceptance
    • Jan 28th- Final confirmation
    • It took less than 2 months for me.

Faculty

8

  • Faculty-to-student ratio is around 70-150 :1 So that means high competition, less time from the professor for individual attention. I was unable to get enough time in the office sometimes.
  • Teaching is primarily based on the slide presentation taken from a book, which is used to cover the syllabus. They also give some other open source references to understand and practice to get hands-on. We can use it to showcase the projects we did in our courses in our resume. I'm using using few from my Big Data and DPA course.
  • Professors/Faculty have their networks in the academic field. So they can help to get into TA, RA labs, and further get an internship. But I haven't heard anyone get full-time through these referrals.
  • I admire Jacke Dzoski of Artificial Intelligence and Bogdan Korel of software system architecture, because their teaching methodology is more focused on you to do every step and be thoughtful of all cases and to get a holistic knowledge of the concepts

Campus Life

8

  • College has 2 campuses - 1st one is the downtown campus for management, finance, and law students. And the main Mies campus is at 33rd Street.
  • College has the main MTCC common student facilities. The bog for amusement and games, and drinks. There is the Keating Sports Centre for all sports. There is one open library named the Paul Galvin Library. College also has Student Health Services and the Clinical Food Nutrition department.
  • ISA used to organise Ganesh Puja, Diwali, graba, Holi, Bollywood night, etc. Other than that, we have a weekly Isckon event for enlightenment, meditation and dinner, etc. There are other events occurring every biweekly in college halls by different groups.
  • You can join fraternity clubs, or you can join startup clubs, either. I was part of the Isckon club and ML tech club, a football or other sports club. You can even start your own club by registering at the college office.

Part Time Jobs

  • Very less, 5-10 out of 100, secure any TA, RA jobs.
  • The pay range is around 4500 per semester.
  • There are other part-time jobs, like front desk office jobs in lots of offices. I luckily got one by just randomly connecting with office staff and handing over my resume copies.
  • My wage was 16 USD per hour for 15-20 hours a week.
  • Max, you can do 20 hours.
  • Campus part-time jobs are very competitive. You need sheer luck to secure one.
  • 16 USD per hour is my college standard part-time salary. Campus part-time jobs are very competitive. You need sheer luck to secure one. You can apply through handshake portals or reach out to college staff by email or in person. Just build a resume relevant to the role. Show lots of past experience in it and submit it in a handshake or emails, etc., you'll get an interview if you're shortlisted. Confidence is the key to getting selected.

Placement

6

  • Just 25% I think hardly secure job within 6 months post graduation.
  • Salary range varies between 75k USD to 130k USD.
  • Mostly Students apply through online job portals. But also, has to connect with recruiters either through in-person/virtual career fairs, reaching out to all local companies in the city, or a consultancy which can help them connect with the company's HR.
  • None of my friends are placed in. FAANG companies. I got an internship in AWS. 2 of my friends are running their start-up. Many of them got an internship in the AI ML field.
  • There is nothing like mass recruitment in the US and in this job market, so let's be real.

Accommodation

Off Campus
10

  • I found accommodation by connecting with people over ISA WhatsApp, the College's Discord and telegram groups.
  • Rent is 1705 USD monthly, including gas and service utilities (excluding wifi and electricity), which is divided to be shared by 4-5 people.
  • The challenge was to find & group up with friends of the same courses and like-mindedness. I contacted even the Amber students to connect with the LM PS apartment management.
  • Recommendation would be to post messages in groups for all the preferences you want, like number of people, veg-non veg, courses, semesters, ethnicity, etc.
  • My accommodation is 20 20-minute walk away from college. Most Indians stay here only

Exams

  • English proficiency is a must- IELTS 6.0 or above. GRE/GMAT and all aptitude tests are optional if you already have a bachelor's degree in the same course.
  • Necessary Docs-
    • Statement of Purpose.
    • GPA equivalent conversion form
    • LOR from 2 or 3 corporate and academic supervisors
    • Resume 1 page
    • vaccination certificates
  • There was no interview in the process.

Fees

  • Fees Breakdown-
    • Activity Fee- 100 USD
    • Student Service Fee- 300 USD
    • Tuition Fee- 15750 USD (1750 USD per credit * 9 credits (3 courses))
    • UPASS - 155 USD
  • Student health Insurance - 2286 USD = 18581 USD -6000 USD =12591 USD for the first 2 semesters
  • The Fees are paid semester-wise. 500-700 USD including rent, utilities, groceries and other expenses.

Scholarship

  • A 6000 USD scholarship was given for the first 2 semesters under the Graduate Pathway Scholarship.
  • Then, if you have a 4 GPA, you'll get a TA job, which will get you a scholarship as per the availability of funds.
  • Almost all my batchmates received this 12k USH scholarship.
  • Approximately 3000 students receive scholarships each year, but I think they have reduced the scholarship amount for the upcoming admissions. Please check it with the graduate admission office.
