The United States-India Educational Foundation (USIEF) has announced the opening of applications for the 2027-28 Fulbright-Nehru Fellowships. Indian students, researchers, faculty members, and professionals can now apply for fully-funded opportunities to study, conduct research, and teach at top US institutions.

Three Fellowship Categories

The 3 different categories are:

Fulbright-Nehru Doctoral Research Fellowships

Designed for Ph.D. students registered at Indian institutions, these fellowships support 6-9 months of research at US universities. Applicants must be registered for Ph.D. on or before November 1, 2025, with thesis submission at least 3 months after the fellowship ends.

Fulbright-Nehru Academic and Professional Excellence Fellowships

Available for faculty, researchers, and professionals with 5+ years of experience, these 4-9 month fellowships enable teaching, research, or a combination of both at US institutions.

Fulbright-Nehru Master's Fellowships

Support for Indian students pursuing 2-year master's degrees at accredited US universities (details for 2027-28 cycle to follow).

Fullbright Scholarship for Indian Students

The fellowships focus on strategic India-US cooperation areas:

  • Critical Minerals & Supply Chains – Geology, Materials Science, Mining Engineering
  • Defense & Security – Cybersecurity, Aerospace Engineering, Robotics
  • Energy Security – Energy Engineering, Petroleum Engineering
  • Science & Research Collaboration – Bioengineering, AI, Semiconductor Engineering
  • Space Cooperation – Astrophysics, Planetary Science, Satellite Communications
  • Technology & Innovation – Data Science, Quantum Computing, Electronics

Grant Benefits

All fellowships include:

  • J-1 visa support
  • Monthly stipend

Key Eligibility Requirements

Doctoral Research:

  • Ph.D. registration at Indian institution (by November 1, 2025)
  • Clear justification for US-based research
  • Published paper or thesis extracts (max 20 pages)
  • Ph.D. supervisor recommendation letter

Academic Excellence:

  • Ph.D. with 5+ years teaching/research experience (faculty)
  • Master's with 5+ years experience (professionals)
  • Recent significant publication (max 30 pages)
  • Employer endorsement confirming leave approval

Important: Government of India employees (IAS, IPS, IRS, IFS) are ineligible. However, researchers from CSIR, ICAR, DRDO, ISRO, ICMR, IISc, and IITs can apply.

  2. Identify US host institution and secure letter of invitation (recommended)
  3. Prepare documents: Transcripts, recommendation letters, publication/thesis extracts, Statement of Purpose
  4. Submit online application:
  5. Submit before July 1, 2026 – Incomplete applications rejected

Important Notes

  • Applicants can apply for only ONE Fulbright-Nehru category per cycle
  • Plagiarism leads to disqualification

  • No extensions or visa sponsorship transfers permitted
  • USIEF strongly recommends identifying US host institutions in advance
