When it comes to studying abroad, international students prefer USA the most for its excellent educational offerings and post-study work benefits. To help you navigate the journey, here’s a detailed timeline to follow, starting from the moment you decide to apply to the moment you step onto campus.

Preparation Phase: 12–18 Months Before Application

It is the very first step of your journey to study in USA. In this phase, you are recommended to research on universities and manage other aspects.

  • Prepare your finances: Generally, US education is not affordable and majorly depends on your selection of universities and courses. Consider factors like application fees, tuition, living expenses, insurance, and other fees while choosing universities.   • Shortlisting universities: Shortlist some 10-15 universities for your chosen course. Application Phase: 9–12 Months Before Application

The second phase to apply to US universities can be divided into following 3 sections.

  • Register for tests: Sign up for the GRE, GMAT, SAT, or ACT. Be aware of the test dates and deadlines for sending your scores to universities
  • Prepare application documents: These are the most critical components of your university application. Arrange all the academic documents you have at one place for the ease of filing the online application. Ask for LORs from your professors or employers.

Application Submission Phase: 6–9 Months Before Application

By this phase, the application process to study in USA is officially started. You start to apply to different universities by filling up the Common App or direct university applications.

  • Sit for the Exams: Take your standardized tests (GRE, SAT, ACT, etc.). Aim to take these tests at least 3-4 months before your application deadlines, so you have time to retake them if necessary.
  • Complete the online applications: Fill out the application forms for each university and submit all required documents, including transcripts, SOP, LORs, and any additional materials such as portfolios or writing samples.

Post Submission Phase: 3–6 Months Before Application

In this stage you must do the following.

  • Stay Organized: Keep track of your interview schedules, time zones, and any additional steps required by the universities.
  • Monitor application status: Keep an eye on your email and application portal for any notifications from the universities. This is the time to make sure all your documents have been received and that nothing is missing.

Final Decision Phase: 1–3 Months Before Acceptance

It is the most nervous stage of the entire process, as universities release decision letters by this time. Hence, you should do the following

  • Wait for decision: Universities will send out admission decisions by March or April. You may receive one of three outcomes: Accepted, Waitlisted, or Rejected.
  • Plan for next steps: If you're waitlisted, stay in touch with the admissions office for updates. If accepted, start preparing for the next steps.
  • Consider your offer: If you are offered admission from multiple universities, take time to evaluate your options. Consider factors like funding, location, program quality, and career prospects.

Pre Departure Phase

By the time you must have admission offers from universities of your choice and accepted any of them. It is the time to apply for the legal requirements to move to US.

  • Apply for a visa: Apply for a F1 student visa as early as possible. Once you accept an admission offer from the university, you will get an I-20. With the I-20 and other required documents, apply for a visa at your local US Embassy or Consulate.
