PPU M.Sc Geography FAQs
Ques. Is M.Sc Geography at Patliputra University offered at the main university campus or at affiliated colleges?
Ans. M.Sc Geography at PPU is offered through its affiliated constituent colleges and not directly at the main Patliputra University campus. When you apply through the PPU admission portal, you will be allotted a college based on your merit rank and preference. The Post Graduate Department of PPU (Geography) at the main campus offers M.A. Geography. So if you specifically want M.Sc Geography, confirm with the allotted college that they offer the M.Sc variant and not just M.A. Geography, as some colleges may offer only M.A. Geography.
Ques. What is the difference between M.A. Geography and M.Sc Geography at PPU, and which one should I choose?
Ans. Both M.A. and M.Sc Geography are 2-year postgraduate programmes at PPU with the same fee structure of Rs. 5,120. The M.Sc Geography has a stronger emphasis on physical geography, cartography, remote sensing, GIS, and scientific methodology, while M.A. Geography leans more towards human geography, regional planning, and social science perspectives. If you have a B.Sc background with Geography, M.Sc is more appropriate. If you have a B.A. background, M.A. Geography is the standard route. Both are equally valid for teaching and civil services.
Ques. Is there any entrance exam for M.Sc Geography admission at PPU, and how is the merit list prepared?
Ans. There is no entrance exam for M.Sc Geography admission at PPU. The merit list is prepared entirely on the basis of marks obtained in the qualifying graduation degree. Priority is given first to candidates who had Geography as their Honours/Major subject, then to those with Geography as a Subsidiary/Pass subject, and finally to those with Geography as an Allied subject. So your graduation percentage directly determines your rank in the merit list.
Ques. How many merit lists are released, and what happens if I don't get selected in the first list?
Ans. PPU typically releases 3 to 4 merit lists for PG admissions. If you are not selected in the first merit list, you should wait for subsequent lists. Seats that remain vacant after each round are carried forward to the next merit list. Students who get selected in later merit lists have the same rights as those selected in the first list. The entire admission process, from the first merit list to the commencement of classes, is usually completed within 6-7 weeks.
Ques. What career options are available after completing M.Sc Geography from Patliputra University?
Ans. After completing M.Sc Geography from PPU, graduates can pursue careers as geography teachers/lecturers in schools and colleges (after qualifying UGC-NET), appear for Bihar civil services and UPSC examinations where geography is a popular optional subject, work in urban and regional planning departments, GIS and remote sensing companies, environmental consultancies, and survey organisations like the Survey of India. Many students also go on to pursue Ph.D. in Geography from PPU or other universities. The low fee structure makes this programme a cost-effective gateway to a wide range of public sector careers.
Ques. Can students from outside Bihar apply for M.Sc Geography at PPU, and is hostel facility available?
Ans. Yes, students from outside Bihar can apply for M.Sc Geography at PPU through the online admission portal. There is no domicile restriction for PG admissions. However, since PPU is a state university, the majority of applicants are from Bihar, and competition is primarily local. Regarding hostel facilities, availability varies by affiliated college. The main university campus and some constituent colleges have hostel facilities, but they are limited. Students from outside Patna are advised to contact their allotted college directly to check hostel availability and charges before confirming admission.
