IIIT Guwahati: an honest review

Placement Experience:

Campus placements of the college are decent, considering the circumstances of the industry. Students become eligible to sit for placements in the 7th semester. The placement season is still ongoing. Some companies that visited include Tekion, Alteryx, De Shaw Samsung, Deloitte, CGI, Natwest, etc. Some students have secured placements through off campus means at major product based companies like Google, Flipkart and Amazon. So far, around 70% of the students have been placed. The highest package has been more than 50 LPA while the average in previous years hovered around 14 LPA. A descent college if not well scored in Jee mains

Placement Experience:

When i came to college the placements were descently high. At that time placements were 99% and with highest package 1.2Cr . But after recession in industry the placement went down to 60% of CSE with average of 14.5LPA. And highest of around 52 LPA. One can also opt for masters after college. I might also do.

Placement Experience:

The students from 5th semester are eligible for Internship programs by the college they can get off campus internship before also for placement after 6th semester the students are eligible . Companies that visited are accenture,gamecroft, microsoft,info edge etc 200+ offers were made and the highest package being 70+ lpa while the average package for cse being 15-16 lpa and for ece it was 12-13 lpa above 85 percent of students got placed and some started their own startups and few went for higher studies .after getting degree I plan to work in corporate for a few years then open my own something

My life in IIITG

Placement Experience:

After the 3rd year, you are pretty much eligible for placements or at least after 6th sem. A lot of companies visit every year including Myntra, Microsoft, Atlassian, Flipkart, etc. The highest package in 2024 is 80 lpa and the average is 15 lpa with a median salary of 13 lpa for CSE. For ECE the average package was 14 lpa and the median was 12 lpa. 93 out of 134 students got placed in CSE The placement percentage for ECE is pretty low as most of them go for higher studies.

The credibility of certain placement stats attached to IIIT Guwahati is a whole different idea that various people clearly do not grasp. One of my friends, being part of the institute, has shed light on the topic. Here is a brief approach to it,

  1. Several graduates join start-ups. The infrastructure is simple. Companies have their own starting point. 
  2. Computer engineers mainly join start-ups because they want to put growth in their innovations.
  3. IIIT Guwahati provides students with degrees, skills, and required education to pursue jobs. They do not strain their students to take up jobs in sectors that they are not willing to take otherwise.
  4. Students should take up job seats in well-known companies with their skills. They have the freedom to choose what they want to pursue, whether it is a well-renowned IT sector or a start-up they either want to establish or be part of.

Having said that, when an authority updates or posts placement stats, they are diligently verified. Apart from any small mistake, the information provided is approved. After the first round of verification, it undergoes the second from the director of the institute.

There are several reasons why the placements of IIIT Bhubaneswar do not hike to the level of IIIT Guwahati. One of my friends is among the recent alumni of the institute and has a better idea about the same. Here is what he has to say.

  • While IIIT Guwahati is an institute of National Importance, IIIT Bhubaneswar is not.
  • IIIT Guwahati usually also has the provision of industry support from various major companies because of the status of national importance it has. It also comes under MHRD, GOI directly. IIIT Bhubaneswar doesn’t enjoy the same privilege.
  • IIIT Guwahati receives funds and support directly from the central government, unlike IIIT Bhubaneswar.
  • IIIT Guwahati was first established by MHRD and was among the few newer IIITs to have their permanent campus quite early.
  • The peer group at IIIT Guwahati is better due to the higher cut-off as compared to IIIT Bhubaneswar.

The average salary package is calculated by dividing the total number of students placed from the total amount offered. Whereas the median salary package is taken into account by approximating the middle of all the offers made to the students after arranging them in ascending order.

The huge difference between the average and the median package of IIIT Guwahati is influenced by the number of students. A small-scale of students were placed as the batch of CSE stream consisted of very less students.

A small number of two to four students were able to land high package offers, resulting in a high average package whereas the median package provides an insight of the average package received by maximum students.
