JLU L.L.M. FAQs
Ques. Is CLAT PG mandatory for LLM admission at JLU, or can I apply without it?
Ans. CLAT PG is not mandatory for LLM admission at JLU. Candidates can appear in the university's own JLUET entrance test instead. However, if you have a valid CLAT PG score of 50 or above, you are exempted from JLUET, which simplifies the admission process. All candidates, regardless of the entrance exam used, must appear in a Personal Interview (PI) conducted by the JLU School of Law. Candidates who have not appeared in CLAT PG can directly apply and appear in JLUET.
Ques. What is the minimum percentage required in LL.B. to be eligible for LLM at JLU?
Ans. As per BCI (Bar Council of India) norms and JLU's eligibility criteria, candidates must have a minimum of 60% aggregate marks in their LL.B. degree (3-year or 5-year integrated program) from a recognized university. A relaxation of 5% (i.e., 55%) is applicable for SC/ST/OBC candidates. Candidates appearing in the final year of their LL.B. examination are also eligible to apply provisionally, subject to meeting the minimum percentage requirement at the time of final admission.
Ques. What career options are available after completing LLM in Criminal Law from JLU?
Ans. An LLM in Criminal Law from JLU opens doors to a wide range of legal careers. Graduates can practice as criminal defense lawyers or public prosecutors in district courts, high courts, and the Supreme Court. They can also appear for judicial services examinations (PCS-J) to become civil judges or magistrates. Other career paths include legal research, law teaching (with NET/SET qualification), working with NGOs in human rights and legal aid, joining the police or prosecution services, and pursuing doctoral research in criminal law. The specialization is particularly valuable for those already practicing law who wish to deepen their expertise.
Ques. Is the LLM from JLU recognized by the Bar Council of India? Can I practice law after completing it?
Ans. Yes, JLU School of Law is recognized by the Bar Council of India (BCI), and the LLM degree from JLU is a valid postgraduate law qualification. However, it is important to note that an LLM degree by itself does not entitle you to enroll as an advocate with the Bar Council. To practice law in India, you need an LL.B. degree (which you would already hold as an LLM candidate) and must be enrolled with the State Bar Council. The LLM enhances your legal expertise and is particularly valuable for specialization, academic positions, and judicial services.
Ques. How is the LLM (Criminal Law) at JLU different from LLM (Corporate and IP Law) or LLM (Cyber Law)? Which one should I choose?
Ans. JLU offers four LLM specializations: Criminal Law and Criminal Justice, Corporate and IP Law, Cyber Law and Cyber Security, and Constitutional Law. The Criminal Law specialization is ideal for those interested in criminal practice, prosecution, judicial services, or human rights law. Corporate and IP Law suits those targeting corporate legal roles, in-house counsel positions, or intellectual property practice. Cyber Law is best for those interested in technology law, data protection, and cybercrime. Constitutional Law is suited for those interested in public law, constitutional litigation, or academic research. Your choice should align with your intended career path and area of legal interest.
Ques. Does JLU offer any moot court or practical training opportunities for LLM students in Criminal Law?
Ans. Yes, JLU School of Law has an active moot court program, legal aid clinic, and internship facilitation for its students. LLM students in Criminal Law can participate in national and international moot court competitions focused on criminal law, human rights, and international criminal justice. The legal aid clinic provides hands-on experience in advising clients on criminal matters under faculty supervision. Additionally, JLU's Career Development Centre facilitates internships with law firms, courts, and legal organizations. These practical components are essential for building courtroom skills and professional networks in the criminal law field.
