AI-Generated Summary based on 11 Reviews

King George's Medical University (KGMU) offers admission to the Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS) program primarily based on National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) scores. Aspiring candidates need to take the NEET-UG exam, which is a 720-mark, 3-hour test comprising 180 multiple-choice questions across Physics, Chemistry, Botany, and Zoology. The marking scheme awards +4 for correct answers and -1 for incorrect ones. The typical cutoff for securing admission in KGMU's BDS program ranges from 630 to 640 marks.

Being one of the most prestigious institutions in Uttar Pradesh, the admission process is particularly competitive. Admissions are conducted through both All India and State counselling, managed by the National Medical Commission (NMC). No direct or management quota admissions are indicated in the reviews. KGMU is favored over other colleges like BHU and MAIDS due to its superior faculty, infrastructure, placement opportunities, and the equitable treatment of BDS and MBBS students.

The campus life, cultural environment, and facilities such as temples, hostels, and mess with good food add to its appeal. Board percentage requirements have not been mentioned in the reviews, focusing mainly on NEET performance as the key criterion for admission.

KGMU: 7 Answered Questions

Is KGMU better or AIIMS Rishikesh?

Raktim Tarafdar
Sanjana KapoorLives in New Delhi

Being a central institute is not important, it's about the scope of learning offered at a medical school.

AIIMS Rishikesh is a central institute, so it has a better administration. However, KGMU offers much more practical knowledge to its students. MBBS is all about gaining practical knowledge. The number and types of patients received by KGMU is very high. As you enter your clinical years, you’ll realize the importance of these things.

AIIMS Faculties are better administered than state faculties. However, MBBS is about your own efforts and approach towards studies. Teachers can only guide you, the hard work is your job entirely. So faculties aren’t much of a concern. Moreover, KGMU also has highly qualified faculties.

I would say KGMU is better than all the other AIIMS, except AIIMS Delhi.

What would I miss if I join Dr. RMLIMS instead of KGMU, Lucknow?

Namrata Das
Sagar Dikshitlives in Lucknow

If you join Dr RMLIMS instead of KGMU, Lucknow, you would be missing the opportunity to be a part of one of the top 5 medical colleges of India. You would miss the Georgian tag. You will miss the rich legacy attached to the institute. You would miss campus life at a huge college. You will miss the amazing infrastructure no use. RMLIMS is an excellent medical college but it is still way behind KGMC by a significant margin. It has recently launched the UG course i.e. MBBS so it will take time to establish itself.

All in all, KGMC is the better option at least as of now.

Is it a wise decision to choose IMS BHU over KGMU?

Namrata Das
Sagar Dikshitlives in Lucknow

Many people consider IMS BHU better than KGMU due to internal PG. But the truth is internal PG at IMS BHU will only give only a single attempt to get an internal seat at a low rank. Moreover, owing to the rotation system in a particular year, there might be no internal seat for a particular branch for a specific category. If you happen to belong to that particular branch, you will have to be among toppers else you won't be eligible for internal benefit or state quota. KGMU on the other hand, will give you unlimited attempts with a state quota

Also, I feel MBBS is not just about PG, but also about the holistic development of the students. That being said, the IMS tag isn't as valuable as the KGMU tag.

So, I don't think it's wise to choose IMS BHU over KGMU.

What should I choose between UCMS, Delhi and KGMU, Lucknow?

Sagar Dikshitlives in Lucknow

Without any second thoughts, go for UCMS. The academic ambiance is almost the same at both the colleges and both of them are highly reputed. Here are a few additional benefits of choosing UCMS over KGMU

  1. You will not have to go through the rural bond
  2. Generally, colleges in Delhi are far better than the colleges in UP. So as 50% of seats in NEET are reserved for State counseling admission to UCMS will be far easier.
  3. Under the UP system, extra merit is given to those who have worked in PHCs for state counseling making it difficult for a fresher. Delhi doesn’t have such a policy.
  4. Life outside campus is fun both in Delhi and Lucknow. Lucknow is known to have excellent food places while Delhi is the capital city.
  5. UCMS allows its students to attend the festival of various other Delhi colleges including AIIMS's Pulse.

Overall, both colleges have their strengths and weaknesses so choose wisely!

Which college should I choose, peripheral AIIMS or KGMU?

Sagar Dikshitlives in Lucknow

One of my cousins got selected in both AIIMS Gorakhpur and KGMU. However, he chose KGMU because of the following reasons

  • KGMU is a state college.
  • It is one of the oldest colleges and has a legacy of more than 100 years.
  • It has a huge patient inflow
  • It’s most famous for its beautiful Infrastructure and lush green campus.
  • It’s the capital of UP so there are many location advantages too.

However, the only drawback is that you will have to serve the bond for 2 years.

AIIMS Gorakhpur on the other hand is a newly established institute so it will take time to grow.

Is MAMC better than KGMU?

Sabeer Chalana
Sanjana KapoorVMCC Delhi

Both MAMC and KGMU are top medical colleges in India. However, MAMC has a slight location advantage over KGMU and is also known to have a better environment for medical education.

Here is a brief comparison of these colleges based on common aspects

  • Infrastructure : KGMU has a much better infrastructure than MAMC with around 4500 beds and 80 departments with it's own cancer institute whereas MAMC has a bed capacity of 2800. Despite being a government college, KGMU is well-maintained and clean.
  • Campus : KGMU has an exceptionally beautiful campus and the MAMC campus cannot even be compared to it.
  • Faculty : Although both colleges are known to have excellent professors, MAMC does give a slight edge to KGMU in this aspect. It has some very renowned faculties of India second only to the faculty in AIIMS.
  • Location : Located in the capital city, MAMC is the first choice of NEET toppers. KGMU is situated in Lucknow which has no such location advantage although some UP students may prefer it over MAMC.
  • Ranking : The MAMC Medical ranking by NIRF is 32 out of 50 colleges in India in 2023 while that of KGMU is 12 out of 50 in India in 2023.

So, KGMU is a good option if you dont make it to good medical colleges in Delhi.

Which is better, AIIMS Jodhpur or KGMU Lucknow?

Sagar Dikshitlives in Lucknow

KGMU has always been a very attractive option for medical aspirants.

It has a good infrastructure and reputation. It is considered as the best medical college in UP. I don’t have much idea about AIIMS Jodhpur, but it is considered the best after Delhi. Personally though, I consider AIIMS Rishikesh a better choice due to its pleasant location.

Recently, the UP government has passed a compulsory bond for UGs and PGs. It is a compulsory 2 years rural posting bond. This is a huge drawback in choosing KGMU Lucknow. The rural posting will be a difficult time, and you won’t learn much from it. There are safety concerns as well.

For your MBBS, you should choose between the two based on personal preference. But I would recommend you go for AIIMS Jodhpur.
