SNU Ph.D. (History and Archaeology) FAQs
Ques. Is UGC-NET JRF mandatory to apply for the Ph.D. in History and Archaeology at SNU, and does it exempt me from the written test?
Ans. UGC-NET JRF is not mandatory to apply for the Ph.D. program at Shiv Nadar University. However, having a NET/JRF qualification is beneficial and is one of the documents you can upload with your application. Importantly, SNU explicitly states that there will be NO waiver of the written test for NET-JRF holders. Every applicant, regardless of their NET/JRF status, must appear for the departmental written test conducted in online mode and subsequently for the interview. This is a key differentiator from many other universities where NET-JRF holders are directly called for interviews.
Ques. What should my research proposal cover, and how important is it in the selection process?
Ans. The research proposal is a critical component of your application. It should be 2,000-2,500 words and must outline a specific research question or problem you wish to investigate, situate it within existing scholarship, and explain your proposed methodology. The proposal should ideally align with the research expertise of the current faculty at the Department of History and Archaeology. You can check faculty profiles at history.snu.edu.in/people/faculty to identify potential supervisors before writing your proposal. The writing sample (minimum 6,000 words) is equally important and should demonstrate your ability to engage critically with historical or archaeological sources.
Ques. What is the effective cost of doing a full-time Ph.D. at SNU after accounting for the stipend and fee waivers?
Ans. For full-time scholars, the financial support is substantial. The annual tuition fee is Rs. 1,10,000, but a waiver of Rs. 60,000 is provided, making the net tuition Rs. 50,000 per year. Additionally, scholars receive a monthly stipend of Rs. 45,000 (Years 1-2) and Rs. 50,000 (Years 3-5). Over 5 years, the total stipend amounts to Rs. 28,80,000, which far exceeds the total fees payable. In effect, full-time Ph.D. scholars not only study at a subsidized cost but also receive a net income, making it financially viable to pursue the program without external funding.
Ques. What are the research areas and fieldwork opportunities available in this program?
Ans. The Department of History and Archaeology at SNU covers a wide range of research areas including epigraphy, social and cultural history of South Asia, economic history, museum archaeologies, heritage studies, histories of childhood and education, and field archaeology with a focus on South Asian sites. The department has a dedicated Archaeology Lab with artifacts and field method resources. Ph.D. scholars can undertake fieldwork as part of their research, particularly those working on archaeological topics. The department also collaborates with national and international partners, and scholars are encouraged to present their work at seminars, workshops, and conferences.
Ques. Can someone with a four-year undergraduate degree (without a Master's) apply for the Ph.D. program?
Ans. Yes, SNU has recently opened the Ph.D. program to candidates who have completed a four-year undergraduate degree with a minimum CGPA of 8.0. This is in line with the new UGC guidelines that allow direct Ph.D. admission after a four-year bachelor's degree. However, such candidates must still submit a strong research proposal and writing sample, and appear for the written test and interview. Candidates with a Master's degree (minimum 55% marks) or an M.Phil. degree remain the primary applicant pool.
Ques. What career paths are available after completing a Ph.D. in History and Archaeology from SNU?
Ans. A Ph.D. from SNU's Department of History and Archaeology opens doors to academic careers as Assistant Professors or Researchers in universities and research institutions (after clearing UGC-NET/SET if not already done). Graduates can also pursue careers with the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI), state archaeological departments, museums, heritage conservation organizations, and cultural policy bodies. The interdisciplinary training at SNU, which includes museum studies and field archaeology, also makes graduates suitable for roles in heritage tourism, archival management, and international research collaborations. The strong faculty network and research publications from the department add significant credibility to the degree.
