SNU BA (Research) English FAQs
Ques. Is the BA (Research) in English at SNU still being offered for 2026 admissions, or has it been replaced by the new IHS program?
Ans. This is a common query among prospective students. SNU has launched a new B.A. (Research) in Interdisciplinary Humanities and Social Sciences (IHS) program for 2026, which offers majors in Sustainability Studies, Archaeology and Heritage Studies, and Society, Culture and Technology. The standalone BA (Research) English program is not prominently listed in the 2026 admissions brochure. However, the program page and 2025 prospectus are still live on the SNU website. Students interested in the BA (Research) English should directly contact the admissions SPOC Mr. Neeraj Topani at shss.admissions@snu.edu.in or call 8826278400 to confirm availability for the 2026-27 batch before applying.
Ques. What is the difference between BA (Research) English at SNU and a regular BA English Honours at other universities?
Ans. The BA (Research) in English at SNU is fundamentally different from a conventional BA English Honours. The "Research" designation means students must complete a mandatory 8,000-word Undergraduate Supervised Research Paper (UGSRP) worth 12 credits in their final year, with weekly faculty consultations. The curriculum is also strongly interdisciplinary, incorporating courses from philosophy, sociology, linguistics, digital humanities, and translation studies. Additionally, SNU follows a credit-based system with 160 total credits over 4 years, and students have the flexibility to take courses from other departments. This makes graduates well-prepared for research-oriented careers, MA/PhD programs, and competitive examinations.
Ques. What career options are available after completing BA (Research) English from SNU?
Ans. SNU English graduates have pursued a wide range of careers. In the corporate sector, several alumni are placed in top multinational companies in roles related to content writing, instructional design, communications, and business administration. Academic careers include MA and direct PhD programs in literary studies, policy studies, media and communication, and MBA programs. Other career paths include publishing and editing, journalism, law (after LLB), school teaching, art curation, public health communication, and event management. SNU's Career Development Cell (CDC) actively supports students from their 3rd year with internship placements and interview preparation.
Ques. Is hostel accommodation mandatory at SNU, and what does the living expense cover?
Ans. Hostel accommodation at SNU is included in the living expenses of Rs. 2,43,500 per year (for twin-sharing AC rooms). This amount covers hostel fees, mess charges, laundry charges, and access to 24x7 primary medical services on campus. For non-AC twin sharing rooms, the charge is Rs. 2,28,500 per year. SNU is a fully residential campus and most students stay on campus. The hostel room type and category may change based on availability, and students allocated higher-category rooms will need to pay the additional charges as per actual allocation.
Ques. Can I get a scholarship for BA (Research) English at SNU, and how competitive is it?
Ans. Yes, multiple scholarships are available. The most accessible are the Merit-Based Scholarship (50% tuition fee waiver for 95%+ in Class 12) and the School Topper's Scholarship (100% tuition fee waiver for school toppers with 98%+ aggregate). The Need-Based Scholarship can cover up to 100% of both tuition and hostel fees for students with family income below Rs. 3 lakhs per year. Ques. What entrance exams are accepted for admission to BA (Research) English at SNU, and is there an interview?
Ans. SNU accepts multiple entrance routes for BA (Research) programs in SHSS: SNUSAT (SNU's own online home-proctored test), CUET 2026 score (available after result declaration, subject to seat availability), College Board SAT, and ACT. The SNUSAT tests Quantitative Reasoning and Logical Reasoning (20 questions each, 45 minutes each section). For the CUET route, an interview may be required.
