CU BE {Lateral} (Biotechnology) FAQs

Ques. What is the difference between the regular B.E. Biotechnology and the B.E. Biotechnology Lateral Entry programme at Chandigarh University?

Ans. The regular B.E. Biotechnology is a 4-year (8-semester) programme open to students who have passed 10+2 with Physics, Chemistry, and Biology/Mathematics. The Lateral Entry programme is a 3-year (6-semester) programme for diploma holders in Engineering/Technology or B.Sc. graduates, who are admitted directly into the 2nd year (3rd semester). The lateral entry route saves one academic year and the associated fees. Both programmes lead to the same B.E. (Biotechnology) degree, with no distinction between regular and lateral entry graduates.

Ques. What are the 8 specialisation tracks available in the B.E. Biotechnology programme at CU?

Ans. The programme offers 8 specialisation tracks: Molecular Biology and Genetics (manipulating genetic material for various applications), Biochemistry and Microbiology (biochemical processes and microorganism characteristics), Bioprocessing and Bioreactors (large-scale production of biopharmaceuticals and biofuels), Cell and Tissue Engineering (developing cells and tissues for therapeutic purposes), Bioinformatics and Computational Biology (computational analysis of biological data), Genetic Engineering and rDNA Technology (modifying biological systems with desired functions), Nanobiotechnology (applying nanotechnology to biological systems for drug delivery and diagnostics), and Industrial Biotechnology (practical applications in vaccine production, pharmaceuticals, food and beverage, biofuels, and environmental management).

Ques. What internship opportunities are available to B.E. Biotechnology students at CU?

Ans. CU Biotechnology students get internship opportunities at some of India's most prestigious research institutes and hospitals. Current and past internship sites include AIIMS (All India Institute of Medical Sciences), CSIR-CSIO Chandigarh, Indian Institute of Sciences (IISc) Bangalore, NABI (National Agri-Food Biotechnology Institute), INST (Institute of Nano-Science and Technology) Mohali, TATA Medical Centre Kolkata, Panacea Biotech Lalru, IIT Madras, National Institute of Oceanography (CSIR Lab) Goa, and ACTREC (Advanced Centre for Treatment, Research, and Education in Cancer) Mumbai. These internships provide students with hands-on research experience in cutting-edge biotechnology domains.

Ques. What career opportunities are available after completing B.E. Biotechnology (Lateral Entry) from CU?

Ans. Graduates can pursue careers in Biopharmaceutical and Biologics Companies, Healthcare and Diagnostics, Food Fermentation Industry, Monoclonal Antibodies and rDNA Products, Agricultural Biotechnology, Environmental Biotechnology, Research and Development, and Consulting and Regulatory Affairs. The placement packages for Biotechnology students at CU range from 6 LPA to 24 LPA. Key recruiters include Abbott, Sun Pharma, and other leading pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies. The biotechnology industry is experiencing strong growth driven by personalized medicine, regenerative medicine, synthetic biology, and AI in biotechnology.

Ques. Is a B.Sc. graduate eligible for the B.E. Biotechnology Lateral Entry programme at CU, and are there any additional requirements?

Ans. Yes, B.Sc. graduates from a UGC-recognised university with at least 50% marks are eligible, provided they have studied Mathematics as a subject at the 10+2 level. However, there is an important condition: all Basic Science, Mathematics, and Programme Core Courses in the first-year B.E. curriculum must have been covered either in the Diploma or B.Sc. degree. If any prerequisites are deficient, the candidate must complete bridge courses as specified by the university's equivalence committee before or during the programme. B.Sc. graduates from Biology/Biotechnology backgrounds are particularly well-suited for this programme.

Ques. What makes the Biotechnology Engineering department at CU unique compared to other universities?

Ans. Several factors make CU's Biotechnology Engineering department stand out. CU is the only university in Punjab to receive NBA accreditation for various engineering programmes. The department has 200+ MOUs with international universities in the biotechnology domain, enabling semester exchange and international research collaborations. Faculty have filed 7 patents in biofermentation and bioprocess engineering. Students get internship access to premier institutes like AIIMS, IISc, IITs, and CSIR labs. The department offers 8 specialisation tracks with vertical-based subject choices in Industrial Biotechnology, Medical and Clinical Microbiology, and Plant Biotechnology. Additionally, 100% of the faculty hold doctorates from IITs, NITs, German universities, and Central Universities.
