If you got through both XLRI and TISS, which one would you choose?

Mansi Topa
Neha Chowdhurystudied MBA in Healthcare Managment at Tata Institute of Social Sciences (2017)

If you get both XLRI and TISS, you should choose the latter. Both of these are widely reputed. These offer different value propositions and learnings. XLRI is a true blue B-school. It is competitive and placement-oriented

TISS isn’t your typical B-school. It is a social sciences school, where placement follows knowledge. They have an opinionated, liberal knowledge-oriented approach towards academics. The pedagogy is research and fieldwork-oriented. You can choose any of the courses as optional irrespective of your course. This will help develop your perspective towards our country.

Placement isn’t an issue for these institutes. You will get good ROI from both. The XLRI vs TISS is a never-ending debate and there isn’t any clear winner. You won’t miss out on any opportunity if you choose one over the other.

Which one is better: IIM Lucknow or TISS HRM?

Supriya Kolli

IIM Lucknow and TISS HRM are different in terms of course structure and placements. TISS HRM offers better placements in human resource management. Whereas IIM Lucknow provides better jobs in various fields like marketing, finance, general management, consulting, etc.

Specialization - HR:

If HR is your first priority, then go for TISS.

  • Companies and firms prefer TISS over IIMs to recruit students for their HR vacancies. Although there might be some HR options at IIML, you will not find diverse job profiles of options in IIML.
  • Located in the heart of Mumbai, TISS has fewer students. Thus, it offers good salaried HR jobs to students.

Deciding Factors:

One must take into account his/her aims and goals, before choosing between these two colleges. The following factors must be taken into consideration while choosing.

  • Both the institutes provide decent salaried jobs to students. Human Resource jobs might offer less salary at the starting and midpoints. However, the salary differs from companies to companies. After gaining a good amount of experience in the field, this difference in companies will hardly matter.
  • You should ask yourself if you want a revenue target-oriented job like marketing and finance or something which has less pressure like HR. HR jobs are less stressful as they don’t have such targets.
  • HR work involves indirect revenue generation. The HR job starts with recruitment and after gaining experience it involves compensation management, training, and development, organization design, etc. Thus, you have to decide if you want direct or indirect involvement in revenue generation.

MBA in HR is a specialized degree thus, you may not be able to go to other fields with this degree later in your career. So, take all these factors into consideration before choosing an institute among these two.

How do the new HR programs of IIM Ranchi, NMIMS, and XIMB measure up to the established ones of XLRI, TISS, MDI and SCMHRD?

Apoorv AshutoshFormer PhD Candidate at Indian Institute of Management Lucknow (2017–2020)

The simple answer to your question is no, the new HR programs of IIM Ranchi, NMIMS, or XIMB are not at par with the established ones XLRI, TISS, MDI, and SCMHRD. The established programs especially that of XLRI are the epitome of HR programs. They cannot be compared to the new ones at any given level or parameter.

  • Faculty: The professors of XLRI are renowned throughout the industry for their competency. They specialize in almost every domain one can think of be it Law, Competency Modeling, Compensation, or Performance Management.
  • Peers: It’s the cream students who get the opportunity to get into a prestigious college like XLRI. You can see tough competition between the finest students at college. Every individual has a valuable opinion and stands to contradict others. Their thinking pattern is broad and given a case study, they look at all angles from accounting to finance to laws while proposing the solution. The situation at TISS is also quite similar.

Now one can say that the curriculum can be replicated and learned faculty can be sought to match the quality of the HR program at these institutes. But the truth is faculty and curriculum are the main but not the only factors that determine an institute's worth. Its own culture, ethics, and background have a lot to do with the programs it offers.

So one cannot match XLRIs programs no matter how much they try.

Which is better among TISS HRM, and JBIMS MMS?

Hardik NagarStudent

TISS offers one of the best HRM programs, rivaling that of XLRI HR, and has produced highly competent individuals in this field. If you have a strong passion for HR and are confident in your choice, TISS would be an excellent choice for you to pursue this specialization.

On the other hand, if you are uncertain about your career path, it may be advantageous to keep your options open. In this scenario, it would be best to choose a college that allows you to decide on your stream later, rather than committing to a specific specialization immediately. This approach has its own advantages and disadvantages, so it ultimately comes down to personal preference and what best suits your individual needs and goals.

Regardless of your choice, both TISS and JBIMS have top-notch individuals in all areas of management, so you can be assured that you will receive a high-quality education and have the opportunity to be mentored by skilled professionals.

Which one is better, an M.A. in Education (Elementary) from TISS or from Azim Premji University?

Aman KaushikM.A. in Education from Azim Premji University, 2018

Tata Institute of Social Science (TISS) offers M.H.A, PGD, MA, B.Ed courses. Azim Premji University offers BA, MA, L.L.M, B.Sc. courses. A friend of mine recommended M.A in Education from Azim Premji University(APU) as it is better, considering various aspects:

  • Faculty: Azim Premji University includes faculty from all over the world. Eminent educationists like Aman Madan, ex faculty of TISS and Rohit Dhankar are now part of the renowned faculty of APU.
  • Infrastructure: Both the universities are well known for their state of the art infrastructure, with the APU campus being a marvel in progress and will have an even more of a competitive edge against other universities.
  • Diversity: The geographic diversity among students is well matched in both TISS and APU, with their campuses being colloquially dubbed as “Mini India”. On one hand, TISS focuses more on reservation and representation from each state and a majority of the urban student population. On the other hand, APU encompasses an urban to rural student population ratio of 50:50.
  • Field Connection: The Field experience in both institutes are considered exemplary. TISS is known for giving the field exposure of working in various NGOs, experience of working in rural areas and slums whereas APU gives field experience at NGOs as well as at Azim Premji Foundation, an umbrella body for all NGOs.
  • Financial Support: At TISS, financial assistance is provided on the basis of reservation and APU provides financial assistance on the basis of economic status. Economic status is confirmed through a field visit by a team of APU to the student’s home to confirm their candidature for financial support. At APU, all students in need of financial support can avail scholarships and also many students take up side jobs to earn extra money while pursuing studies.

In conclusion, TISS is known for its legacy of many famous social workers, but APU is favoured now by those who are education oriented.

Which B-school should I join if I have converted TISS, SJMSOM (IITB) and NITIE?

Raktim GhosePGDM from Indian Institute of Management Kashipur

All three colleges are on top and choosing one among three is not easy. But I can give you some ideas about them as I have friends studying at these institutes. TISS is one of the most reputed colleges for HRM courses in the country. The top two institutes for HR programs are XLRI and 2nd is TISS. XLRI holds first place due to its history and huge batch size and placements.

  • TISS is growing fast but still doesn’t have the same presence as XLRI has.
  • TISS though has the advantage of a very small batch size compared to XLRI, which means lesser competition.
  • And again TISS is at Bombay while XLRI is at Jamshedpur. I would say TISS is still a very good option for aspirants interested in HR.

NITIE and SOM are the top two colleges in India for operations and supply chain profiles with NITIE being the clear number 1.

  • Long history and a huge batch size result in lots of senior supply chain managers from NITIE across various companies.
  • On the other hand, though 20 years old, SOM was upgraded only recently, to 120 batch size from earlier 60.Students are getting to the top but SOM does not have the same presence as NITIE.
  • NITIE has more recruiting companies with cushy pay packages as compared to SOM. Although SOM is improving its placement numbers rapidly.
  • SOM does boast of elegant IIT B infrastructure and less batch size and hence, lesser competition due to smaller batches.
  • But NITIE would give you more options in terms of placements.

So my preference order will be the following.

TISS (HR) > NITIE (Operations & SCM) > SJMSOM (Finance & others)

So, choose wisely based on your preferred domain. And in case you are interested in Marketing, both NITIE & SJMSOM are equally good.

Which is better for Developmental studies TISS or IIT Madras?

Rishav Gangopadhyay
Samriddha SahaStudied at Tata Institute of Social Sciences, (2018)

To get a better picture, let’s compare the two Institutes based on some common parameters:

  • Faculties - Development Studies department at TISS and IIT Madras have highly esteemed professors imparting the best knowledge.
  • Infrastructure: Infrastructure-wise, both institutes are fair and equal
  • Placements: The placement of DS is better at TISS than at IIT Madras. Students are offered placements and internship opportunities in very renowned NGOs like Pratham, Sneha, Aanandi, etc. The package offered is normal, and the maximum salary package offered is 22 LPA.
  • Curriculum: This course is one of the best offered in the school of social work at TISS. Being one of the flagship courses of TISS, it's superior in quality to that offered at IIT Madras.
  • Brand name - IIT Madras is an engineering college while TISS is known for its social sciences specialization. Hence, it enjoys a better name globally and has a better research culture too.
  • the quality of its research and researchers.
  • Campus life: The ambiance at TISS is conducive to the requirements of the DS course and comprises several departments promoting social activities like social work, development studies, tribal studies, disability studies, etc. This aspect is missing at IIT Madras and the learning experience of this course is not on par with TISS.

For Development Studies only, I would strongly suggest you go for TISS.
