TIFR Hostels: Students' Opinion

AI-Generated Summary based on 39 Reviews

TIFR's hostels, located in Navy Nagar, offer well-furnished single and double occupancy rooms with community bathrooms, 24-hour water and electricity supply, free Wi-Fi, DTH, and recreational facilities. The hostel is secure with separate buildings for boys and girls, monitored by security guards and wardens. The mess provides both vegetarian and non-vegetarian meals, and prepares special dishes on occasions.

Mess timings are strict, and hostel gates close at 10 PM. Despite the rapid space crunch causing students to wait over a year for on-campus accommodation, the facilities and infrastructure are commendable. Temporary flats are available 20-30 km away for students waiting for hostel space.

Hostel Facilities:

Hostel buildings were nicely constructed with the separated boys and girls hostel. It was guarded by the security guards and under warden surveillance making it a safe and secure place. The mess timings were strict and the food given was tasty and healthy. The gates of the hostel were used to get closed sharp at 10PM to not let students go outside at night. The washrooms and other utilities like room bed, fan, cooler, etc were well designed and cleaned. Overall the environment of the hostel was friendly and polite.

Hostel Facilities:

This perhaps the only point in which TIFR falls short of excellence. TIFR, situated in a comfortable and well-connected locality in Navy Nagar, has been going through rapid space crunch in the recent years, due to the lack of available free space (while not destroying the diverse flora and fauna of the surroundings). This affects the students, who have to wait more than a year to get on-campus accommodation (they are provided flats about 20-30 kms away). Nonetheless, the hostels rooms (single and shared) are well furnished, with community bathrooms and drinking water supplies. The mess food is not great, but palatable enough. One can always go to the numerous restaurants nearby to satisfy their foodie desires..

In my class, there was more boys than the girls. But, we had never experienced any kind of discrimination in our class. We had got equal opportunities in everything. We had also enjoyed participating in the sports events organized by our college.

This is a point worth mentioning and emphasizing. TIFR boasts a hassle-free, liberal and apolitical environment, optimum for upbringing of rational and scientific temper. Gender ratio: Sadly, reflects the nationwide situation. Female participation in the research is encouraged, though.

Besides these, many other activities are also organized in which all students participate and enjoyed a lot.

Not many celebrations are facilitated in the grounds (in view of its non-strict nature): among which are diwali, saraswati puja, dahi handi, onam, gudi padwa and so on. Among the social occasions, there are: the organizer's day, diverse open days, Frontiers of science and other scienctific outreach programs, freedom day, republic day and so on. Worth referencing are likewise the effort programs held off-grounds, and the social occasions facilitated by famous gatherings and specialists in the colossal Homi Bhabha assembly room consistently.
