IIM Bangalore Ph.D FAQs

Ques. How does the IIMB Test differ from GMAT and GRE, and who should consider it?

Ans. The IIMB Test is a specialization-specific written exam conducted on the IIM Bangalore campus by faculty from the relevant area. Unlike GMAT or GRE, which test standardised verbal and quantitative aptitude, the IIMB Test evaluates domain knowledge and analytical reasoning specific to the chosen research field. Format and difficulty vary by specialization area. It is conducted in two rounds per cycle, October and February. Candidates with strong domain expertise who have not prepared for GMAT often prefer this route, though competition through the IIMB Test is equally intense.

Ques. Can a candidate apply to more than one specialization area at IIM Bangalore in the same cycle?

Ans. No. IIM Bangalore requires applicants to select one specialization area per application cycle. The shortlisting process, area test, and faculty interview are all tailored to that specific area. If a candidate does not receive an offer from their chosen area, they would need to wait for the next cycle and may apply to a different area. Reviewing faculty profiles and recent area publications before applying is strongly advisable to make an informed choice.

Ques. What happens to the fellowship and financial support if the programme is not completed within five years?

Ans. All institutional financial support, including the monthly fellowship, housing, and grants, ceases at the end of June in Year 5 or at convocation, whichever comes first. Scholars who have not submitted their thesis by that point would need to continue research without financial backing from the institute. The structured milestones, including the Area Comprehensive Exam and Thesis Proposal defence, are designed to keep scholars on a timely trajectory. Extensions are uncommon and are handled on a case-by-case basis.

Ques. Why does IIM Bangalore not accept CAT or GATE for PhD admission, unlike IIM Ahmedabad and IIM Calcutta?

Ans. IIM Bangalore uses GMAT, GRE, and the IIMB Test, aligning its doctoral admissions with international research programme benchmarks. IIM Ahmedabad and IIM Calcutta also accept CAT and GATE, which widens the eligible pool considerably. Candidates holding a strong CAT score but without GMAT or GRE may find the Fellow Programme at IIM Ahmedabad or IIM Calcutta a more direct path. IIMB’s narrower entrance format reflects its emphasis on a globally benchmarked research profile.

Ques. Is the IIM Bangalore PhD suitable for candidates targeting policy or think-tank roles rather than a teaching career?

Ans. Yes, specifically through the Public Policy specialization. Graduates from this area have joined government advisory bodies, international organizations, and development research institutions alongside academic positions. IIM Bangalore does not run structured placements for these roles, so placement depends on the scholar’s own research network and publications built during the programme. For development or policy sector careers, Public Policy is the most aligned specialization within the doctoral programme.
