Ques. Can Madrasa graduates apply for the Ph.D. (Islamic Studies) at JMI?
Ans. Yes, Madrasa graduates can apply, provided their qualifications are recognised as equivalent to a Master's degree by the Association of Indian Universities (AIU) or the relevant equivalence committee at JMI. JMI has a list of recognised Arabic Madaris/Institutions (Annexure IV of the prospectus) whose qualifications may be considered. Candidates are advised to get their Madrasa degree verified for equivalence before applying. JMI actively supports bringing Madrasa graduates into mainstream education.
Ques. In which language can the PhD thesis be written at the Department of Islamic Studies, JMI?
Ans. The thesis can be written in English, Urdu, or Arabic, subject to prior approval of the Departmental Research Committee (DRC). This is a significant advantage for scholars who are more comfortable in Urdu or Arabic, especially those with a Madrasa background. The synopsis of the thesis must also be submitted in English in addition to the language in which the thesis is written.
Ques. What are the main research areas in the Department of Islamic Studies at JMI?
Ans. Based on recent PhD theses awarded by the department, the main research areas include: Quranic Sciences and Tafsir, Hadith and its sciences, Islamic jurisprudence (Fiqh) and comparative law, Sufism and Sufi orders in India, Muslim society and education in India, interfaith dialogue and comparative religion, Islamic movements and reform in the Indian subcontinent, and the contributions of Muslim scholars to Islamic learning. The department has a strong focus on South Asian Islamic thought and Muslim communities in India.

Ans. The Department of Islamic Studies at JMI has a very active research tradition, with over 100 PhD theses awarded since its establishment. In recent years (2023-2025), the department has awarded multiple PhDs annually, covering diverse topics from Quranic studies to Muslim socio-religious movements in Kerala and Bengal. The department also publishes the e-journal "Bazm-e-Tahqeeq" for dissemination of Islamic studies research.
