JMI Ph.D. (Education) FAQs
Ques. Can I pursue Ph.D. in Education at JMI while working full-time?
Ans. Yes, JMI offers a Part-Time Ph.D. option for working professionals. However, your residence/workplace must be within India, your employer must issue a No Objection Certificate (NOC), and your official duties must permit you to attend required coursework at JMI. The minimum duration for part-time scholars is 4 years.
Ques. Is the JMI Ph.D. entrance test very competitive? What is the syllabus?
Ans. The entrance test has two papers: Paper I covers research methodology (100 MCQs, common to all faculties) and Paper II covers advanced knowledge of Education (50 MCQs + subjective questions). Candidates need to score at least 50% in aggregate to qualify. The syllabus is available on the JMI admission portal. Candidates with UGC-NET JRF are exempt from the test.
Ques. How many Ph.D. seats are available in the Faculty of Education at JMI?
Ans. The exact number of seats varies each year depending on available supervisors and their vacancy limits (Professors: 8 scholars, Associate Professors: 6, Assistant Professors: 4). The total Ph.D. intake across all faculties was 1,060 for 2026-27. The Faculty of Education has two departments, each with multiple faculty members, so the actual seats depend on supervisor availability at the time of admission.
Ques. What research areas are available for Ph.D. in Education at JMI?
Ans. Research areas include teacher education, school education, higher education, educational administration and management, early childhood development, special education (visual impairment, specific learning disability), educational planning and policy, non-formal education, and comparative education. The Faculty also has a strong focus on inclusive education and educational research methodology.
Ques. Does JMI provide hostel accommodation for Ph.D. scholars?
Ans. JMI has hostel facilities on campus, and about 30% of students get hostel accommodation. Ph.D. scholars can apply for hostel accommodation through the online hostel admission portal. However, availability is limited and not guaranteed. Scholars are required to reside in the NCR region during the first two years of registration.
Ques. What happens if I cannot complete my Ph.D. within the stipulated time?
Ans. The maximum duration is 6 years, extendable up to 8 years (with annual extensions approved by the BOS/COS and Vice Chancellor). Women scholars and scholars with more than 40% disability may get up to 10 years. If the thesis is not submitted within the maximum period, the registration is automatically cancelled. Women scholars are also entitled to maternity/child care leave of up to 240 days once during the entire Ph.D. programme.
