IIT Delhi Ph.D. Physics FAQs

Ques. What entrance test is required for the doctoral Physics programme at IIT Delhi?

Ans. Candidates must qualify GATE 2026 in the PH (Physics) paper. A valid national fellowship from UGC, CSIR, DBT, ICMR, or INSPIRE is also accepted as an alternative to GATE. Scores from the 2024, 2025, and 2026 GATE cycles remain valid. B.Tech graduates from IITs with a CGPA of 8.0 or above may also be considered for direct admission without a GATE score.

Ques. What is the monthly stipend for doctoral Physics scholars at IIT Delhi?

The Prime Minister’s Research Fellowship offers up to INR 80,000 per month for highly meritorious candidates from premier institutes.

Ques. How long does completing a Physics doctorate typically take at IIT Delhi?

Ans. The minimum duration is three years. Most scholars complete their research in four to five years depending on the experimental setup, data collection, and thesis scope. Ques. Can students from Applied Physics or related sciences apply for this programme?

Ans. Yes. Candidates with M.Sc. in Applied Physics, Materials Science with a strong physics component, Electronics, or related disciplines may apply. The department reviews applications holistically, but the qualifying degree must be in a closely related field with 60% aggregate. Candidates are encouraged to contact potential supervisors before applying to confirm research interest alignment.

Ques. Is there a written test after shortlisting for the IIT Delhi Physics doctoral programme?

Ans. Yes. GATE score determines initial shortlisting. Shortlisted candidates appear for a written test and personal interview by the Department Research Committee. The written test covers classical mechanics, quantum mechanics, electrodynamics, statistical mechanics, and mathematical physics. The final merit list is prepared from the written test score, interview performance, and the overall academic record of the candidate.

Ques. What research areas are active in the IIT Delhi Department of Physics?

Ans. Active research areas include condensed matter physics, photonics and nanophotonics, astrophysics and cosmology, soft matter and biophysics, plasma physics, and quantum information science. The department houses advanced experimental facilities including optical labs, thin-film deposition units, and a low-temperature cryogenics lab, supporting a broad range of experimental and computational research projects for doctoral scholars.

What are the humanities courses that one should do at IIT Delhi?

Kunal SharmaB.Tech. from Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi

Usually, two types of people opt for humanities courses. One prefers a laid-back schedule and easy grading while the other prefers challenging coursework and exciting lectures. My friend was kind to opt for a more lively course than spend his classes yawning away. He chose some courses like

  • Mind, Machines, and Language
  • Language and Communication
  • Creative Writing

Another extremely learned professor taught him Science, Society, and Technology. No doubt the course was very rigorous and demanding, but my friend enjoyed the course anyways. There were deep discussions, readings, and assignments which sometimes seemed too hectic, yet the entire process was intriguing and exciting at the same time.

Another course my friend opted for was Moral Literacy and Moral Choices which taught him concepts of Philosophy that none knew about. The course was very interesting. He talked about various thinkers and their philosophical teachings which transformed the students into another world.

All the humanities courses offered at IIT Delhi are intriguing and the parity of professors cannot be doubted. Go for any course that sparks a ray of interest in you!

What is the worst course you've taken or have heard of at IIT Delhi?

Akriti Banerjeelives in New Delhi

In my opinion, the two worst courses one should refrain from ever taking in IIT Delhi are MCP 100 and MCP 101.

MCP 100: This course is Engineering Drawing and is one of the most irrelevant courses offered at IIT Delhi. It is taught by prof Sujeet Kumar Sinha who has no teaching skills and is always in a rush to complete the course. The entire syllabus is completed in just 2 months leaving no space to comprehend what was taught.

MCP 101: This course comprises concepts such as casting and welding which are not expected to be studied by an IITian at least.

Both the courses are a complete waste of time and don’t do justice to the institute's reputation.
