IIT Delhi PhD FAQs

Ques. Is GATE mandatory for all IIT Delhi PhD applicants and who is exempt?

Ans. GATE is not mandatory for everyone. B.E./B.Tech graduates from IITs and NITs with a CGPA of 8.0 or above after at least 6 semesters are exempt, as are M.A./M.Sc. graduates from IITs with 8.0 CGPA. All other candidates need a valid GATE, CSIR-UGC NET, ICAR, ICMR, or DST-INSPIRE score. Check department-specific notifications on the IIT Delhi admissions portal for additional conditions.

Ques. What is the Research Aptitude Test and how is it different from the personal interview?

Ans. The RAT is a department-specific written test evaluating fundamentals in the chosen research area. It is conducted after shortlisting and before the personal interview. The interview assesses research proposal quality, clarity of thought, and supervisor fit. Some departments waive the RAT for candidates with very strong GATE or NET scores. Check department-specific guidelines on the IIT Delhi admissions portal for the exact format each cycle.

Ques. How does the PMRF differ from the standard JRF fellowship at IIT Delhi?

Ans. PMRF pays INR 70,000 per month versus JRF at INR 37,000 per month, plus an annual INR 2 Lakh contingency grant for conferences and equipment. To receive PMRF you must first gain regular PhD admission and then apply separately on the national PMRF portal. Selection is highly competitive. Regular JRF is granted automatically to qualifying scholars without a separate application.

Ques. What joint PhD opportunities does IIT Delhi offer?

Ans. IIT Delhi has joint PhD programs with Sorbonne University (France) and NYCU (Taiwan). Scholars spend one to two years at the partner institution while remaining enrolled at IIT Delhi, and both institutions award the degree jointly. These are competitive slots and not every department participates. Contact the IIT Delhi International Programmes office to check current availability in your target department.

Ques. When does the Semester 2 PhD admission cycle open at IIT Delhi?

Ans. IIT Delhi runs two PhD cycles per year. Semester 1 for 2026-27 opened in March 2026, closed in April 2026, and classes began July 2026. Semester 2 for 2026-27 is expected to open around October to November 2026 based on past patterns, with an intake beginning in January 2027. Watch the PG Admissions section at home.iitd.ac.in for the official notification.
