IGNOU PGDRD FAQs

Ques. Can PGDRD credits be transferred to IGNOU's MA in Rural Development (MARD)? How does this work?

Ans. Yes, students who complete PGDRD from IGNOU and wish to pursue the MA in Rural Development (MARD) are entitled to credit transfer. The credits from PGDRD courses (MRD-101, MRD-102, MRD-103, and the elective) are transferred to MARD, except for RDD-5 (Research and Project Work). This means PGDRD holders can complete MARD in a shorter time by not repeating the courses they have already passed.

Ques. Is PGDRD useful for government competitive examinations? Which exams does it help with?

Ans. Yes, the PGDRD programme specifically enhances knowledge of Rural Development and Panchayati Raj System, which is directly relevant for competitive examinations. It is useful for UPSC Civil Services (Rural Development is a GS paper topic), State PSC examinations, Rural Development Officer posts, Block Development Officer (BDO) examinations, and various state government examinations related to rural development and Panchayati Raj. The programme also helps NGO workers and government employees in their professional roles.

Ques. What is the Research and Project Work (RDD-5) component in PGDRD? Is it mandatory?

Ans. Yes, RDD-5 (Research and Project Work, 6 credits) is a mandatory component of the PGDRD programme. Students must undertake a project study on a rural development problem in their local area. This involves identifying a research problem, collecting primary and secondary data, analyzing findings, and submitting a project report. The project work provides practical exposure to rural development issues and develops research skills. It is submitted to the Study Centre and evaluated by the university.

Ques. Which elective course should I choose in PGDRD - Rural Social Development, Rural Health Care, or Communication and Extension?

Ans. The choice depends on your career interests. MRDE-101 (Rural Social Development) is suitable for those interested in social welfare, community development, and social work. RDD-6 (Rural Health Care) is ideal for those working in health sector, ASHA workers, health extension officers, and those interested in rural public health. RDD-7 (Communication and Extension in Rural Development) is best for those interested in extension education, agricultural extension, and communication for development. All three are equally valid for the degree.

Ques. Is PGDRD from IGNOU recognized for government jobs? Can I apply for Rural Development Officer posts with this diploma?

Ans. Yes, the PGDRD from IGNOU is recognized by the Association of Indian Universities (AIU) and is a valid postgraduate diploma. It is accepted for government job applications where a PG Diploma in Rural Development is required. Many state governments and central government departments recognize IGNOU's PGDRD for Rural Development Officer, Block Development Officer, and similar posts. However, specific job eligibility depends on the recruitment notification, so candidates should verify the requirements for each post.

Ques. Can I pursue PGDRD while working as a government employee or NGO worker? Is there any attendance requirement?

Ans. Yes, PGDRD is specifically designed for working professionals including government employees, NGO workers, and Panchayati Raj functionaries. Being an ODL programme, there are no mandatory daily classes or attendance requirements. Students study through self-learning material at their own pace, submit assignments, and appear for Term-End Examinations twice a year (June and December). The flexible structure makes it ideal for those who cannot attend regular classes.
