IGNOU PHDEC FAQs
Ques. How competitive is the IGNOU PhD Economics programme, and what are my chances of getting in?
Ans. The IGNOU PhD Economics programme is extremely competitive due to the very limited number of seats. In the July 2025 session, only 3 seats were available (UR=1, SC=1, OBC=1). This means that even among shortlisted candidates, only a handful will be selected. To maximise your chances, you should have a strong UGC-NET score (ideally JRF), a well-defined research proposal, and a clear understanding of your intended research area and its alignment with the expertise of IGNOU SOSS Economics faculty.
Ques. Can I pursue IGNOU PhD Economics in part-time mode while working as an economist or policy analyst?
Ans. Yes, IGNOU offers the PhD in Economics in both full-time and part-time modes. Part-time scholars can continue their employment while conducting research. However, you must obtain a No Objection Certificate (NOC) from your employer, which is mandatory for attending the interview and for admission. You must also attend the mandatory coursework at IGNOU Headquarters, New Delhi, for the first six months, with at least 80% attendance. Your employer must confirm in the NOC that you will be relieved from duty to complete the coursework if required.
Ques. What research areas are available for PhD Economics at IGNOU?
Ans. IGNOU's PhD in Economics under SOSS covers research areas including development economics, macroeconomics, microeconomics, public finance, agricultural economics, international economics, labour economics, environmental economics, and economic policy analysis. The specific research area you can pursue depends on the expertise and availability of faculty supervisors at IGNOU SOSS. Candidates are strongly advised to review the research interests of IGNOU SOSS Economics faculty before applying and to prepare a research proposal aligned with available supervisory expertise.
Ques. Is M.Phil. in Economics from IGNOU or another university sufficient for PhD Economics admission?
Ans. Yes, candidates who have completed an M.Phil. in Economics with at least 55% marks (50% for reserved categories) are eligible for PhD Economics admission at IGNOU, in addition to those with a Master's degree in Economics. However, the UGC-NET qualification requirement remains mandatory regardless of whether you have an M.Phil. or a Master's degree.
Ques. Where are the PhD interviews conducted, and what is the interview format?
Ans. IGNOU PhD interviews are conducted only at IGNOU Headquarters, Maidan Garhi, New Delhi. There is no provision for online interviews. The interview panel evaluates candidates on three components: Research Methodology (40% weightage), Subject Domain (40% weightage), and Communication Skills (20% weightage). Candidates are required to bring original identity proof and all original academic documents. A research proposal is also expected at the time of interview.
Ques. What career opportunities are available after completing a PhD in Economics from IGNOU?
Ans. A PhD in Economics from IGNOU opens doors to academic positions (Assistant Professor, Associate Professor) in universities and colleges, research roles in government think tanks (NITI Aayog, RBI, NABARD, Planning Commission-equivalent bodies), international organisations (World Bank, IMF, ADB, UN agencies), policy advisory roles in central and state governments, and positions in economic research departments of banks and financial institutions. The degree is recognised by UGC and is valid for applying to faculty positions in UGC-recognised institutions across India.
