IGNOU Ph.D. Chemistry FAQs

Ques. Is CSIR NET accepted for IGNOU Ph.D. Chemistry admission, or is only UGC NET valid?

Ans. Both CSIR NET and UGC NET are accepted for IGNOU Ph.D. Chemistry admission. Candidates with a valid CSIR NET or UGC NET score (with or without JRF) in Chemical Sciences are eligible to apply. CSIR NET is the more relevant exam for chemistry candidates and is widely preferred.

Ques. What laboratory facilities are available for Ph.D. Chemistry scholars at IGNOU?

Ans. IGNOU's School of Sciences has science laboratories, a food processing laboratory, and a tissue culture lab. Additionally, scholars have access to a computing lab for data analysis, online subscription to major research journals, and plagiarism check through URKUND. The specific laboratory facilities available depend on the research area.

Ques. What are the research areas available under IGNOU Ph.D. Chemistry?

Ans. Research areas include Organic Chemistry, Inorganic Chemistry, Physical Chemistry, Analytical Chemistry, Biochemistry, Environmental Chemistry, Polymer Chemistry, Medicinal Chemistry, and Green Chemistry. The specific area depends on the availability of a supervisor with expertise in that domain.

Ques. How many seats are available for IGNOU Ph.D. Chemistry and how competitive is admission?

Ans. In the July 2025 session, 7 seats were available (UR=4, SC=1, OBC=1, EWS=1). The number of seats is limited, making admission competitive. Candidates with CSIR-JRF or UGC-JRF have a significant advantage as they are directly called for interview.

Ques. Can I pursue IGNOU Ph.D. Chemistry while working as a chemistry teacher or in the pharmaceutical industry?

Ans. Yes, the Part Time mode is designed for working professionals. However, the mandatory six-month coursework at IGNOU's New Delhi campus requires 80% physical attendance. Part Time candidates must obtain an NOC from their employer. Laboratory work during the research phase may also require regular visits to IGNOU campus.

Ques. Is IGNOU Ph.D. Chemistry degree accepted for faculty positions in chemistry departments?

Ans. Yes, IGNOU Ph.D. Chemistry is fully recognised by UGC and is accepted for faculty positions in chemistry departments of colleges and universities across India. Candidates must also fulfil the UGC NET/SET requirement for Assistant Professor positions as per the latest UGC regulations.

How to change IGNOU subject/course/medium?

Dev Anand

how to change subject/course/medium at IGNOU:

IGNOU allows changes in certain circumstances:

  • Subject change: possible within the first 30 days of admission for the current session. visit your regional center or apply through ignou.ac.in ? student zone ? program change/subject change
  • Program/course change: if you want to switch to a completely different program (e.g., BA to BCA), you generally cannot transfer — you must re-apply for the new program fresh. some provisions exist within the same school/faculty
  • Medium change: can typically be changed with a written request to your regional study center

the annual window for changes is narrow — usually the first month of each admission cycle (Jan or July). after the window, changes are not generally accepted. visit ignou.ac.in ? student support or your nearest IGNOU regional center. bring your enrollment ID and relevant documents. call your regional center to confirm the current process as IGNOU procedures can vary slightly by center.
