IGNOU M.Sc FAQs

Ques. I have a B.Sc. with Physics and Mathematics but Physics was not my major. Am I eligible for IGNOU M.Sc. Physics?

Ans. Yes. The eligibility criteria include graduates with a B.Sc. Degree with Physics and Mathematics (not necessarily as major/honours). So a B.Sc. graduate with Physics and Mathematics as subjects is eligible to apply for MSCPH.

Ques. Are the laboratory sessions really compulsory? How are they managed in distance mode?

Ans. Yes, laboratory sessions are compulsory for this programme. IGNOU assigns you a Learner Support Centre (LSC) near your location where lab sessions are conducted. The General Physics and Electronics labs (MPHL-009 and MPHL-010) are spread across Semesters 1 and 2, while the Computational Physics lab (MPHL-015) is in Semester 3. The university may also assign you to a different LSC for labs if required.

Ques. What elective courses are available in M.Sc. Physics at IGNOU?

Ans. Three elective courses are available: Materials Science (MPHE-025), Elements of Reactor Physics (MPHE-026), and Nanoscience (MPHE-027). In Semester 3, you must choose one elective, and in Semester 4, you must choose two different electives (you cannot repeat the Semester 3 elective). This allows you to specialise in areas like nanoscience or nuclear physics.

Ques. Is the M.Sc. Physics degree from IGNOU valid for UGC-NET and teaching positions?

Ans. Yes. The MSCPH degree from IGNOU is recognized by UGC and AIU and is equivalent to a corresponding degree from any recognized university. Graduates are eligible to appear for UGC-NET in Physics and can apply for teaching positions in colleges and universities, subject to meeting the NET/SET qualification requirements.

Ques. What career opportunities are available after M.Sc. Physics from IGNOU?

Ans. Graduates can pursue careers in teaching (school/college/university), research (CSIR, DRDO, ISRO, BARC, national labs), and industry (semiconductor, optics, defence, energy sectors). The programme also prepares students for competitive exams like GATE (Physics), JEST, and CSIR-NET for research fellowships and PhD admissions.

Ques. Can I pursue a Ph.D. after completing M.Sc. Physics from IGNOU?

Ans. Yes. The M.Sc. Physics degree from IGNOU is recognized by UGC and AIU, making graduates eligible to apply for Ph.D. programmes at universities across India. Graduates can also appear for CSIR-NET/JRF, GATE, and JEST to qualify for research fellowships and Ph.D. admissions at IITs, IISc, and other premier institutions.

How to change IGNOU subject/course/medium?

Dev Anand

how to change subject/course/medium at IGNOU:

IGNOU allows changes in certain circumstances:

  • Subject change: possible within the first 30 days of admission for the current session. visit your regional center or apply through ignou.ac.in ? student zone ? program change/subject change
  • Program/course change: if you want to switch to a completely different program (e.g., BA to BCA), you generally cannot transfer — you must re-apply for the new program fresh. some provisions exist within the same school/faculty
  • Medium change: can typically be changed with a written request to your regional study center

the annual window for changes is narrow — usually the first month of each admission cycle (Jan or July). after the window, changes are not generally accepted. visit ignou.ac.in ? student support or your nearest IGNOU regional center. bring your enrollment ID and relevant documents. call your regional center to confirm the current process as IGNOU procedures can vary slightly by center.
