IGNOU M.Sc Geoinformatics FAQs

Ques. I am a B.Com graduate. Am I eligible for IGNOU M.Sc. Geoinformatics?

Ans. Yes. The eligibility for MSCGI includes graduates in Commerce/Business Administration/Management from a recognized university. So a B.Com graduate is eligible to apply. The programme is designed to be accessible to learners from diverse academic backgrounds who are interested in geospatial technologies.

Ques. What is the difference between M.Sc. Geography (MSCGG) and M.Sc. Geoinformatics (MSCGI) at IGNOU?

Ans. M.Sc. Geography (MSCGG) is a broader programme covering physical geography, human geography, environmental geography, and geospatial tools as part of the curriculum. M.Sc. Geoinformatics (MSCGI) is a more specialized, technology-focused programme that concentrates specifically on GIS, remote sensing, GPS, digital image processing, spatial databases, and their applications. MSCGI is more suitable for those seeking careers in the geospatial technology industry, while MSCGG is better for those interested in teaching geography or pursuing research in human-environment relationships.

Ques. Are laboratory sessions compulsory in M.Sc. Geoinformatics? How are they conducted?

Ans. Yes, laboratory courses are compulsory. IGNOU assigns students to a Learner Support Centre (LSC) where lab sessions are conducted. In case of any issue, the university may allot a different LSC at its discretion. Students should be prepared to attend labs at the assigned centre, which may differ from their preferred choice.

Ques. What career opportunities are available after M.Sc. Geoinformatics from IGNOU?

Ans. Graduates can pursue careers as GIS Analysts, Remote Sensing Specialists, Geospatial Data Scientists, Cartographers, Urban Planners, and Disaster Management Specialists in organizations such as ISRO, NRSC, Survey of India, Forest Survey of India, National Disaster Management Authority, state remote sensing centres, private GIS firms, and defence establishments.

Ans. Yes. The MSCGI degree from IGNOU is recognized by UGC and AIU and is equivalent to a corresponding degree from any recognized university. It is valid for government jobs, teaching positions, and further research admissions. Many government agencies involved in geospatial work (ISRO, Survey of India, state remote sensing centres) accept IGNOU degrees for relevant positions.

Ques. Can defence personnel benefit from this programme?

Ans. Yes. Defence and law enforcement personnel are specifically listed as a target group for this programme. The ODL mode allows them to study flexibly alongside their service commitments. The programme's coverage of geospatial technologies, GPS, and spatial analysis is directly relevant to defence mapping, intelligence, and operational planning roles.

How to change IGNOU subject/course/medium?

Dev Anand

how to change subject/course/medium at IGNOU:

IGNOU allows changes in certain circumstances:

  • Subject change: possible within the first 30 days of admission for the current session. visit your regional center or apply through ignou.ac.in ? student zone ? program change/subject change
  • Program/course change: if you want to switch to a completely different program (e.g., BA to BCA), you generally cannot transfer — you must re-apply for the new program fresh. some provisions exist within the same school/faculty
  • Medium change: can typically be changed with a written request to your regional study center

the annual window for changes is narrow — usually the first month of each admission cycle (Jan or July). after the window, changes are not generally accepted. visit ignou.ac.in ? student support or your nearest IGNOU regional center. bring your enrollment ID and relevant documents. call your regional center to confirm the current process as IGNOU procedures can vary slightly by center.
