IGNOU DIRIL FAQs

Q1. Is the IGNOU DIRIL programme suitable for someone already working in a retail store?

Ans. Yes, the DIRIL is specifically designed for working retail professionals. Since it is an ODL programme, there are no mandatory daily classes. The practical component (BRLP-101) actually benefits those already working in retail, as the internship/workbook can often be completed within their current workplace. Many frontline retail employees pursue DIRIL to formalise their experience and qualify for supervisory or managerial roles.

Q2. What is the BRLP-101 practical component, and how is it completed?

Ans. BRLP-101 is the Internship, Workbook and Viva-Voce component worth 16 credits, which is mandatory for completing the DIRIL programme. Students are required to complete an internship at a retail establishment, maintain a workbook documenting their experience, and appear for a viva-voce at their designated study centre. Students who are already employed in the retail sector can use their current workplace for the internship component. The viva-voce is conducted at the study centre by faculty.

Q3. Can I upgrade from DIRIL to a full BBA degree?

Ans. Yes. The DIRIL is structured as the first year of the Bachelor of Business Administration in Retailing (BBARIL). After successfully completing DIRIL, you can continue into the second year of BBARIL (Advanced Diploma in Retailing - ADIR) and then the third year to earn the full BBA degree. This modular structure allows students to exit with a diploma, advanced diploma, or full degree depending on how far they progress.

Q4. How many study centres offer DIRIL, and is it available in my city?

Ans. DIRIL is available at select study centres across India, including cities like Bhopal, Shillong, Bhubaneswar, Jaipur, Chennai, Delhi, Srinagar, Nagpur, Noida, Madurai, Mumbai, Patna, Chandigarh, and Jodhpur. It is not available at all IGNOU regional centres. You must check the current list of active study centres on the official IGNOU Samarth portal before applying, as the list may change each session.

Q5. What career opportunities are available after completing IGNOU DIRIL?

Ans. After completing DIRIL, graduates can pursue roles such as Retail Sales Associate, Floor Supervisor, Store Operations Assistant Manager, Inventory and Logistics Coordinator, Visual Merchandising Executive, and Customer Service Manager in organised retail chains, supermarkets, hypermarkets, e-commerce fulfilment centres, and specialty stores. The diploma is particularly valued by large retail chains like Reliance Retail, DMart, and similar organised retail employers.

Q6. What happens if I cannot complete the internship component within the minimum duration?

Ans. IGNOU allows a maximum of 3 years to complete the DIRIL programme, which includes the BRLP-101 practical component. If you are unable to complete the internship within the first year, you can continue as a re-registered student and complete it in the second or third year. However, you cannot appear for the final viva-voce until the internship workbook is completed. It is advisable to start the internship process early to avoid delays in programme completion.
