The Certificate in NGO Management (CNM) is a 12-credit distance learning programme offered by the School of Management Studies (SOMS) at Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU). With a minimum duration of 6 months (extendable up to 2 years), the programme provides foundational managerial concepts to NGO workers, covering introduction to NGO management, management functions, and health care management. The total programme fee is Rs. 2,100 (plus applicable registration and development fees). The programme is open to anyone who has completed 10+2 or to matriculates with at least 3 years of work experience in the NGO sector, making it one of the most accessible management programmes in India. It is particularly popular among grassroots NGO workers, social activists, community health workers, and development sector professionals who want to formalise their management skills.

The January 2026 admission cycle is currently open. The last date for fresh admission for Certificate programmes is extended to 30th March 2026. Applications can be submitted online at ignouadmission.samarth.edu.in. The July 2026 admission cycle is expected to open in May 2026, with a tentative last date in August 2026 (based on the previous year's schedule).

IGNOU CNM FAQs

Ques. I have only passed 10th standard (matriculation) but have been working in an NGO for 5 years. Am I eligible for CNM?

Ans. Yes. Matriculates (10th pass) with at least 3 years of work experience in the NGO sector are explicitly eligible for CNM. Your 5 years of NGO work experience more than satisfies this requirement. This makes CNM one of the very few IGNOU programmes accessible to 10th pass candidates.

Ques. I work in a health-focused NGO. Is the CNM curriculum relevant to my work?

Ans. Absolutely. One of the three courses in CNM is BMS-3 (Health Care Management - 4 credits), which is specifically designed for NGO workers in the health sector. It covers health care management concepts, making it directly applicable to your work in a health-focused NGO.

Ques. Does completing CNM help in getting funding or recognition for my NGO?

Ans. While CNM itself does not directly help in getting funding, it equips NGO workers with formal management skills - financial management, human resource management, project planning, and health care management - that are valued by funding agencies and government bodies. A formally qualified NGO manager is better positioned to write project proposals, manage grants, and demonstrate organisational capacity to donors.

Ques. Is the CNM programme available at Jan Shikshan Sansthans (JSS)?

Ans. Yes. The CNM programme has one of the widest study centre networks among IGNOU programmes, including hundreds of Jan Shikshan Sansthans (JSS) and Government ITIs across India. This makes it accessible even in rural and semi-urban areas where regular college-based study centres may not be available.

Ques. When will my Term-End Exam be held if I join the January 2026 session?

Ans. For the January 2026 session, the TEE is tentatively scheduled from 1st June 2026 to 15th July 2026. You must submit all assignments before the deadline and fill the examination form (with exam fee) within the stipulated time to be eligible.

Ques. Can I pursue CNM while continuing my full-time NGO work?

Ans. Yes. CNM is specifically designed for working NGO professionals. As a distance learning programme with a flexible schedule, you can study at your own pace. The minimum duration is 6 months and the maximum is 2 years. There are no fixed class timings - you study from self-learning material sent to your address or available online through eGyanKosh.

How to change IGNOU subject/course/medium?

Dev Anand

how to change subject/course/medium at IGNOU:

IGNOU allows changes in certain circumstances:

  • Subject change: possible within the first 30 days of admission for the current session. visit your regional center or apply through ignou.ac.in ? student zone ? program change/subject change
  • Program/course change: if you want to switch to a completely different program (e.g., BA to BCA), you generally cannot transfer — you must re-apply for the new program fresh. some provisions exist within the same school/faculty
  • Medium change: can typically be changed with a written request to your regional study center

the annual window for changes is narrow — usually the first month of each admission cycle (Jan or July). after the window, changes are not generally accepted. visit ignou.ac.in ? student support or your nearest IGNOU regional center. bring your enrollment ID and relevant documents. call your regional center to confirm the current process as IGNOU procedures can vary slightly by center.
