The Certificate in Japanese Language (CJL) at IGNOU is a 6-month Open Distance Learning (ODL) programme offered by the School of Foreign Languages, designed to introduce beginners to the basics of the Japanese language. The programme covers Japanese grammar, phonetics, and communication skills, enabling learners to read, write, listen, and speak Japanese accurately. With a total programme fee of Rs. 5,500 and bilingual (Japanese/English) self-learning material integrated with audio-visual components, CJL is one of the most accessible Japanese language certificates in India. The programme requires a 10+2 qualification and a minimum age of 18 years, making it suitable for students, working professionals, and anyone interested in Japanese language for career, travel, or cultural purposes. Japan's growing economic ties with India have made Japanese language skills increasingly valuable in sectors like IT, manufacturing, tourism, and diplomacy.

IGNOU CJL FAQs

Ques. I have no prior knowledge of Japanese. Can I still apply for IGNOU CJL?

Ans. Yes. The CJL programme is specifically designed for beginners with no prior knowledge of Japanese. The only requirements are a 10+2 qualification and a minimum age of 18 years. The programme starts from the very basics of Japanese grammar and phonetics.

Ques. Is IGNOU CJL useful for getting a job in Japan or Japanese companies in India?

Ans. Yes, completing CJL gives you a foundational understanding of Japanese language, which is valued by Japanese companies operating in India (especially in IT, automotive, and manufacturing sectors). However, for professional-level roles, you would typically need N3 or higher proficiency on the JLPT (Japanese Language Proficiency Test). CJL is a good starting point to build towards JLPT certification.

Ques. Does IGNOU CJL cover Japanese script (Hiragana, Katakana, Kanji)?

Ans. Yes. The CJL programme covers the basics of Japanese phonetics and grammar, which includes introduction to Hiragana and Katakana scripts. Basic Kanji may also be introduced. The bilingual (Japanese/English) study material with audio-visual components helps learners practice reading and writing Japanese scripts.

Ques. How is the CJL examination conducted? Is there a speaking/oral test?

Ans. The CJL examination is conducted as a Term-End Examination (TEE) by IGNOU, which is a written examination held twice a year in June and December. Students must also submit assignments as part of continuous assessment. There is no separate oral/speaking test in the standard ODL mode.

Ques. Can I pursue CJL along with a degree programme at IGNOU simultaneously?

Ans. Yes. IGNOU generally allows students to pursue two programmes simultaneously, provided there are no conflicts in study centre requirements or examination schedules. CJL, being a short 6-month certificate, can be conveniently pursued alongside a degree programme.

Ques. I missed the January 2026 session. When is the next admission for CJL?

Ans. The next admission cycle is the July 2026 session, expected to open in June 2026 with a tentative last date in July/August 2026. Keep checking ignouadmission.samarth.edu.in for the official announcement.

How to change IGNOU subject/course/medium?

Dev Anand

how to change subject/course/medium at IGNOU:

IGNOU allows changes in certain circumstances:

  • Subject change: possible within the first 30 days of admission for the current session. visit your regional center or apply through ignou.ac.in ? student zone ? program change/subject change
  • Program/course change: if you want to switch to a completely different program (e.g., BA to BCA), you generally cannot transfer — you must re-apply for the new program fresh. some provisions exist within the same school/faculty
  • Medium change: can typically be changed with a written request to your regional study center

the annual window for changes is narrow — usually the first month of each admission cycle (Jan or July). after the window, changes are not generally accepted. visit ignou.ac.in ? student support or your nearest IGNOU regional center. bring your enrollment ID and relevant documents. call your regional center to confirm the current process as IGNOU procedures can vary slightly by center.
