The Certificate in German Language (CGL) at IGNOU is a 6-month Open Distance Learning (ODL) programme offered by the School of Foreign Languages in academic collaboration with the Goethe Institute (Max Mueller Bhawan), New Delhi - a cultural institute of the Federal Republic of Germany. The programme introduces learners to the basics of the German language and gradually develops their abilities to encourage better cultural understanding of Germany. It is a bilingual (German/English) blended programme integrating radio, video, and face-to-face counselling at designated centres. With a total programme fee of Rs. 2,500 - one of the lowest among IGNOU's foreign language certificates - CGL is highly accessible for students and working professionals. The programme requires a 10+2 qualification and is popular among those seeking German language skills for higher education in Germany, career opportunities with German companies in India, or cultural interest.

IGNOU CGL FAQs

Ques. What is the significance of the Goethe Institute collaboration in IGNOU CGL?

Ans. The CGL programme is offered in academic collaboration with the Goethe Institute (Max Mueller Bhawan), New Delhi, which is the official cultural institute of Germany. This collaboration ensures that the curriculum, study materials, and teaching methodology meet international standards for German language instruction. It also adds credibility to the certificate for those seeking to pursue further German language studies or apply for German university admissions.

Ques. I want to study in Germany. Will IGNOU CGL help me with the language requirement?

Ans. CGL provides a foundational introduction to German language. However, German universities typically require B1 or B2 level proficiency (as per CEFR) for admission. CGL covers beginner-level content and is a good starting point. You would need to continue with higher-level German language courses (such as those offered by Goethe Institute directly) to reach the required proficiency level for university admission in Germany.

Ques. Does CGL include face-to-face counselling? Is attendance mandatory?

Ans. Yes. CGL is a blended programme that includes face-to-face counselling sessions at designated study centres, in addition to radio and video components. Attendance at counselling sessions is strongly recommended as the programme has a substantial interactive component. Check with your assigned Study Centre for the counselling schedule.

Ques. How is the CGL examination conducted?

Ans. The CGL examination is conducted as a Term-End Examination (TEE) by IGNOU, which is a written examination held twice a year in June and December. Students must also submit assignments as part of continuous assessment. There is no separate oral/speaking test in the standard ODL mode.

Ques. Can I pursue CGL along with another IGNOU programme simultaneously?

Ans. Yes. IGNOU generally allows students to pursue two programmes simultaneously, provided there are no conflicts in study centre requirements or examination schedules. CGL, being a short 6-month certificate, can be conveniently pursued alongside another IGNOU programme.

Ques. I missed the January 2026 session. When is the next admission for CGL?

Ans. The next admission cycle is the July 2026 session, expected to open in June 2026 with a tentative last date in July/August 2026. Keep checking ignouadmission.samarth.edu.in for the official announcement.

how to change subject/course/medium at IGNOU:

IGNOU allows changes in certain circumstances:

  • Subject change: possible within the first 30 days of admission for the current session. visit your regional center or apply through ignou.ac.in ? student zone ? program change/subject change
  • Program/course change: if you want to switch to a completely different program (e.g., BA to BCA), you generally cannot transfer — you must re-apply for the new program fresh. some provisions exist within the same school/faculty
