HBTU Ph.D Electronics Engineering FAQs
Ques. What is the duration of the Ph.D in Electronics Engineering?
Ans. The minimum duration is three years and it can extend depending on research progress and thesis submission. Most scholars complete the programme within four to five years, which includes the prescribed coursework, a comprehensive examination, regular progress seminars and the final thesis defence before the doctoral committee. The research advisory committee reviews each scholar’s work at fixed intervals to keep the thesis on the right track.
Ques. Is GATE or NET mandatory for admission?
Ans. Yes. A valid GATE, UGC-NET or CSIR-NET score is required to apply for the full-time category. Candidates who clear these national exams then sit the university written entrance test and a personal interview, where the research proposal and subject knowledge are assessed before the final merit list is drawn. Exemption from the written test may apply to JRF holders as per the prevailing admission rules of the university.
Ques. Do research scholars receive any financial support?
Ans. Scholars qualified with NET-JRF receive a monthly fellowship through their research tenure as per UGC norms. SC and ST candidates get full tuition exemption, and UP domicile students can claim state fee reimbursement against valid income proof. Project-funded positions may also carry an assistantship depending on the supervisor’s grant, and selected scholars can avail contingency grants for consumables and conference travel.
Ques. What research areas does the department focus on?
Ans. Work centres on VLSI design, embedded systems, signal processing, communication systems and microelectronics. Scholars can align their thesis with the department’s ongoing projects in device modelling, wireless communication and electronic system design. Modern laboratories and design tools support experimental work across these themes, and scholars are encouraged to publish in peer-reviewed journals, file patents where applicable, and present their findings at national and international conferences.
Ques. What is the total fee for the programme?
Ans. The total course fee is INR 1,92,000 across three years, payable annually at about INR 64,000 per session. Hostel and mess charges of roughly INR 61,000 a year are charged separately from the course fee. Being a state government university, HBTU keeps its doctoral fees well below those of comparable private institutes. A small refundable caution deposit and a one-time registration charge are collected at admission and are not part of the annual fee.
Ques. Can working professionals pursue this Ph.D?
Ans. Yes. HBTU offers part-time and sponsored Ph.D categories alongside the full-time route, letting working professionals and industry researchers pursue doctoral study. The eligibility, the written entrance test and the interview requirements stay the same across all admission categories, though part-time scholars usually have to carry a valid no-objection certificate from their current employer. Sponsored candidates are usually nominated by recognised research organisations or by industries working in a closely relevant field.
