Course Curriculum

10

  • It is difficult in terms of us needing to learn so many new software in a single term and using is along the duration of the course.
  • So that aspect is very difficult. But coming to terms to what sustainability means here differs to what it means back home in India, so design evolution and things differs.

Admission Experience

  • I have been accepted into all universities that I have applied to.
  • I specifically looked into universities that provided sustainable architecture courses and my top picks were university of Nottingham and University of Liverpool. Other universities that I applied to was Oxford Brooks, De Montfort .
  • University of Liverpool had an amazing course called Climate Resilience in architecture which was personally my top pick in terms of courses, but when taking into account everything, UoN was the best option.

Class Schedule

10

  • In a well you have around 3 working days, with one day have around 2 hours of classes, one having 4 while the last day has design/studio classes for the entire day.
  • This year 95% percent of my classmates was Indians, which according to my professors has never happened before.

Faculty

10

  • We have two main studio design professors so it’s at the ratio 1:10. With additional professors coming in for supplementary subjects.
  • All my professors were amazing, especially my department head, she is kind, considerate and easy to approach even with our personal issues.
  • As I was a course representative, I often had to interact with her, but all the encounters has been positive.

Campus Life

10

  • We have three campuses like I have mentioned before, with Jubilee campus and University Park campus (main campus) being around 15 minutes walking distance away from each other, while Sutton campus is like 30-40 minutes bus ride from the main campus.
  • We have all facilities in the main campus with large sport centre in both the Jubilee and University Park campus.
  • We also have a boot( a medicine shop) along with the local GP surgery office within the main campus itself. We have libraries on each campus with George Green library in the University Park campus being the largest.
  • We also have PGT hub area that are open 24/7 fitted with free WiFi for students to sit and work. We also have various restaurants, pubs and cafés around the campus providing food at decent costs.
  • We have various clubs whether it be sports related or just simple ones ( there is even an Indian Society). Each society hosts its own events .

Part Time Jobs

  • We have something called Unit temps that show various job postings that a student can take up. Some jobs are easy like research assistants, while some such student representatives requires you to stand outside all day when work is there.
  • Though we can work upto 20 hours every weeks, not all jobs give you that, sometimes they call you when you are needed. Pay rate also various from the minimum pay (11.5 per hour to 16 per hours), it depends on the type of job you take up.
  • Most apply in fast food restaurants or warehouses as it is more easier to get into. These opportunities also come with benefits like free meals or offers from the brands they work for.
  • These jobs are also more abundant but is harder on your body as it requires a lot of physical labour. But the benefits are good. People also take up positions of waiters, bartenders as well.

Placement

6

  • Since mine is a design based course, it will be difficult to get work. Especially since you will require sponsorship. So I would say around 1-2 out of every graduating class (Indian students only) get work in the first six months of graduation.
  • This also varies from course to course, as some courses provide you with more opportunities in UK. Architecture in general never has any placements in any country, so we can’t take that into account, we always have to apply for jobs ourselves.

Accommodation

Off Campus
10

  • Off campus accommodation is what I opted for, but it’s still a University accommodation. I looked into the University website which gave me various options including the price range to pick from, facilities, type of rooms available etc.
  • My accommodation was 131 pounds per week with all bills included. It was around a 20 minute walk from my department, it’s closer to other departments like psychology, medicine etc.
  • One thing that I was most thankful for in my accommodation is the fact that it had a good mix of students from various ethnic backgrounds. So this ensured that I got to mingle with people from various cultures and that I did not just stick to the Indian student population.

Exams

  • IELTS is what they accept, though a few courses in my University accepts your 12th standard English test scores.
  • All documents including your mark sheets of 10th and 12th grade is required, along with your CV, design portfolio (as it’s a design based course), letter of recommendation (2 needed for my course), Cover letter.
  • In case of my university it normally gives out unconditional offer letters with no interview required.

Fees

  • So in my case it was 24,000 GBP for the 1 year course. You have various options for accommodation, I took up a university accommodation which was 131 pounds per week. Both Uni fees and accommodation fees could be paid in terms.
  • I paid the full University fees upfront while one accommodation fees term wise. My accommodation was like a 20 minute walk from my department, so transportation cost was nothing.
  • The Uni has three campus- the University park campus (main one), Jubilee campus and the Sutton-Bonnington campus. The University had free buses running between them called hopper buses, so you could always use those.
  • Living expenses also varies. My accommodation was all expenses paid (except laundry which was 4 pounds for washing and drying), but food and all other expenses may come up to be around 350-500 pounds a month.

Scholarship

  • Yes, like I mentioned my university has plenty of scholarships available. From ones ranging from 2000 pounds to even fully paid ones.
  • Many do get funding, even in my course of 20 students, 2 of them have 50% funded scholarships, while a few others have like 200-7000 pound scholarships granted to them.
  • I am not sure about the average number of scholarship grants every year, but UoN is one of the few universities that have either half funded or fully funded masters school programs in the country.
