What Students Say
Likes
- Infrastructure of the business school is really good. The libraries are huge and has meeting rooms and study rooms which students can book them for group studies or to study alone.
- It belongs to Russell group.
- Academic structure and the teaching way is different than in India. You get to learn lot more things than just memorising for exams.
Dislikes
- The course was for one year. Would have been good if it was two years.
- Need to concentrate on having more classes on networking and job search.
- Could have had more classes on Job market in the UK.
- I had applied to three colleges for Masters in Management:
1) University of Nottingham
2) University of Birmingham
3) University of Exeter - I received offers from University of Nottingham and University of Exeter. University of Birmingham rejected my application because I didn’t had any prior experience in management and nor had I studied management in my Bachelors. I was from Mechanical Engineering background. So they said that for Masters in Management I would need to have any one in above two things.
- As Nottingham University was under Russell group, I opted it. The admission process was smooth. I was sent an offer letter. Once I accepted the letter, I had to pay the deposit of £2000. Once the amount was paid, the CAS letter was generated which would be necessary for the VISA application. The rest of the fee was paid in three instalments. The eligibility criteria was to have good academic background and proficiency in English. I had given IELTS and had a score of 7.
- I applied for Fall intake. Most of the top ranking University has Fall intake rather than January intake. Due to certain circumstances I applied very late which was in May second week. I received my offer letter within two weeks of applying. Then once I accepted, I had to pay deposit to get the CAS letter. Once it was done, then I got the letter within few days.
Course Curriculum
- The course is not that difficult. It’s mostly theoretical. But the structure is way different from Indian study system. For most of the subjects, we have to submit an assignment consisting of 3000-5000 words. One has to do a lot of reading and research in order to write an assignment.
- Each classes is for 2 hours and everyday one would usually have maximum of two classes.
- The course content itself is not sufficient to secure a job. One would need to network and learn different things in the field.
Faculty
- Faculty often ask you to not to do any kind of part time works and to focus on studies.
- One of the faculty member that I admire is our Strategy course Professor. His classes used to be very interactive.
- The average number of students in each course is between 50-60. But for most of the classes they would combine it with other courses who has got same subjects. The Indian student percentage was around 40-45%.
- Each student would have personal tutor who would help students if they require any kinda support. They would keep track of the students marks too. Under each tutor there would be 4-5 students.
Campus Life
- There are three campus. First one is the main Campus which is University Park Campus. The next one is the Business School campus which is near Lenton. The other one is the Medical school campus which is in Sutton.
- Each and every campus has libraries and cafés. Both main campus and business school campus has gym.
- One of the festival celebrated across the campus is Holi.
- For most of the club membership, one needs to pay. There are so many sports events that happens. One is cricket. But in order to access any sports club, one needs to have the membership.
Placement
- Getting a full time job is very difficult. As the current situation in UK is bad, most of the companies have stopped hiring. Very few had got jobs in UK.
- One has to apply on their own to any companies. It is completely based on the students performance and their background. There is no such thing as campus recruitment.
- There are career fairs where companies would come n tell you about different job opportunities and the job application process in their company. But there would be no direct hiring involved.
Part Time Jobs
- There were no such jobs for students on campus for Masters students.
- Maximum hours of work allowed per week is 20. Students can work outside in cafés, restaurants, supermarkets etc.
- It is very difficult to secure a part time job off campus too as there is lot of competitions. One needs to have prior experience. On campus part time jobs are not available as far of my knowledge.
- Most of the Indian students work in restaurants or supermarkets. The hourly pay is around £11-£12. One can apply through the company website or job portals. Also can directly handover the CVs to the stores.
- As there is lot of competition getting a part time work is difficult. Prior experience is required. For some jobs, they would ask them to work for 2-3 days and then decide about hiring.
Accommodation
- I used online platforms to search accommodations. My accommodation was 10 min away from my campus.
- The weekly rent was £135 for non suite double room. We are 6 people in the flat. Out of which one was a suite room. For the other 5, we had to share between 2 washrooms. We had common kitchen and dining area. There are many students accommodation around the business school. It’s easy to find one.
Exams
- IELTS is required. If not that, one needs to submit a document from their University stating that they have studied their bachelor’s in English language.
- Apart from that I had submitted Statement of Purpose and two Letter of Recommendation and an updated CV. The LOR was from College and my Office.
- I didn’t had any interview process for the selection.
Fees
- The tuition fee was £24000. We had to pay the deposit amount of £2000 from it in the beginning. The rest of the amount was paid in three instalments. The university would have given the last date to pay fee in each sem. One can pay within those dates or they can pay it all together in the beginning.
- I stayed in private accommodation. It was a non-suite double room and the weekly pay was £135. So the monthly rent was approximately £590. One would need around £150-£200 per month for other expenses like groceries and transportation.
Scholarship
- Yes, there are many scholarships. Since I had applied to the University very late, I couldn’t apply for it as the applications were closed.
- I knew a friend who had received £17000 scholarship. She was from Political Science background. Most of the students who had received scholarship was from social science background. If one wants to apply for the scholarship, then they need to write an essay saying why they think they would be needing a scholarship.
