What Students Say
Likes
- The sociology teachers are very helpful. They explain complex topics and thinkers like malinowski very clearly which helps me a lot in preparing for my jet and jpsc exams on the side.
- Fees is very less for pg students. And since I get the ekalyan scholarship my financial burden is almost zero so I can focus completely on my studies without worrying.
- Campus environment is quiet and good for studying. Girls to boys ratio is also almost equal in our MA batch so everyone feels comfortable.
Dislikes
- Infrastructure is quite old and needs improvement. Classrooms need better fans and washrooms are not maintained properly on most of the days.
- There is zero campus placement for MA students. University does not invite any good companies so we have to totally depend on government or competitive exams.
- Office work is very slow in the university. Sometimes it takes many days and standing in long queues just to get a simple signature or document sorted.
Course Curriculum Overview
I choose this course because the syllabus of ma sociology in skmu is very much similar to the jet and jpsc exam syllabus. It helps me a lot in my preparation for civil services. The topics like social facts and functionalism are covered in deep which is very useful. One improvement I want to suggest is that teachers should use more modern teaching methods like projectors and smart boards instead of just old style dictation in class. Exams are taken semester wise. They are conducted on time mostly but sometimes result gets delayed. Difficulty level of semester exams is average. If you read the class notes properly it is very easy to pass and score good marks.
Fees and Financial Aid
The fee for pg in sociology at skmu dumka is very okay and not too expensive. Total fees for one year is around 25000 rupees and for full course it will be 50000. In this we pay admission fee of around 2000 and remaining is for tuition and exam fee. They dont ask for extra money and fees is not increasing from last few years it is same. Since I am from jharkhand I applied for ekalyan scholarship. It is very helpful for sc st and obc students. Almost all my friends in reserved category fill the ekalyan form and get scholarship amount directly in bank account. This cover most of the college expenses. General category friends dont get ekalyan but still 25000 per year is manageable for university level so everyone is comfortable.
Campus Life
Campus life in skmu is very simple and not like big private colleges. We dont have any big technical fests but we celebrate annual sports day and saraswati puja in february month very grandly. Library is decent and has many good books for sociology and other arts subjects but finding latest journals is little difficult. Classrooms are very basic with normal blackboard and wooden benches there is no smart classes or wifi for students. We have a big ground where boys play cricket and football but sports equipments are not provided much by the university. There are no fancy clubs for coding or drama but student unions are very active in campus which helps students in admission and other office issues.
Admission
I choose skmu over other colleges because it is very affordable and perfectly fits my need. I did not apply to many outside colleges because my main target is to crack state civil services. The syllabus here matches perfectly with my jet and jpsc exam preparation so staying here was the best decision. The admission process is completely online and very simple. We just have to fill the application form on the jharkhand chancellor portal. The basic eligibility is simply having a graduation degree with passing marks. There is no tough entrance exam for getting into pg sociology here. The university releases a merit list based on your graduation percentage. Since my grad score was decent my name came in the first merit list itself. After that I just went to the university department for physical document verification and paid the small admission fee online. The whole process was very smooth and took only two days.
Faculty
The sociology department faculties in skmu dumka are very supportive. The ratio of student to teacher is decent since our class size is around 150. I really like how they teach complex sociological theories. Specially when they explain thinkers like Bronislaw Malinowski and Emile Durkheim it becomes very easy to understand. This course structure is very much helpful for my JET and JPSC exam preparation also because it covers the exact syllabus. Exams are held semester wise and they are not very hard if you study the class notes properly. Only few students fail who dont attend classes at all. Some teachers are little strict about assignment submission but overall my experience with the teaching staff is very good and they are easily approachable if we have doubts.
Night Life
there is no big nightlife in skmu or dumka city because it is a small and quiet place. university library and public areas close by 5 or 6 pm in the evening so students mostly go back to their rooms or hostels. hostel timings are strict especially for girls they have to be inside by 7 pm mostly and boys can roam outside a bit longer. we usually hang out at nearby tea stalls or local fast food shops just outside the campus before it gets dark. there is no gym in the campus and there are no pubs or big malls here for late night parties. the locality is generally safe for roaming around but since I am preparing for my jpsc exams I mostly stay in my room and study at night. for students who want peace for studies it is very good but if you want big city nightlife you will be disappointed.
