What Students Say
Likes
- Campus life is excellent, especially as you get to interact with students from other institutions within the MAHE university.
- Course curriculum is regularly updated and very relevant
Dislikes
- There is a lot of favouritism among the faculty. They have 2-3 students in the class that they give all their attention to and the rest have to fend for themselves.
- Infrastructure is not up to the mark. Could be better for the fees we are paying
Course Curriculum Overview
The curriculum is updated every few years and is very relevant especially when it comes to the new softwares or methods used in the industry. The jury-based evaluation system is very helpful in teaching us how to explain our projects, defend our concepts when they are questioned and it also learn to take constructive criticism. The assignments and exams are planned in a through and systematic manner which makes it easier to handle the submissions in a more orderly way.
Fees and Financial Aid
For the b.des fashion design degree (4 years) the yearly fees are 2.26 lakhs. Caution deposit of 10k is charged at the beginning of the course. Tuition fee is 1.52 lakhs and other fee are 92,000. Other undergraduate programs offered are b.des Interior design (2.6 lakh/year) and b.arch (4.47 lakh/year). Various scholarships are available such as scholar scholarship based on class 12 performance and achiever scholarship based on annual academic performance. Both offer 20% waiver on course fee. There is also a scholarship for konkani speaking students with a 10% waiver on course fees
Campus Life
There are 2 major college events: Avant which in held in September and Opus which is held in February. Both events have fashion shows that allow the fashion student to showcase their collections. The classrooms are equipped with smart boards and plug points at each desk. The Fashion design labs are equipped with sewing machines, overlock machines and dress forms. Although there is always a problem with the iron boxes and some dress forms are broken. There are many opportunities for sports including a inter-house event consisting of multiple sports competitions. There are also many inter-MAHE events on the university level. There a variety of clubs that you can join that host their own meetings and performances. The campus always comes to life during an event.
Hostel Facilities
There are many hostels located within the MIT campus for boys and girls. Some buildings are new and have better rooms and facilities. You can opt of a single room, though it can be pretty hard to get one. They most allot double occupancy rooms. There are also triple occupancy rooms. You get a choice between ac and non ac, I would suggest opting for an ac room as the weather can get very unbearably hot during the summer. Most blocks have attached bathrooms, though few have common washrooms. The blocks are kept very clean and have housekeeping that you can call whenever you want. The mess food is also pretty decent and hygienic and the menu changes every day. It is mandatory to opt for a hostel in the 1st year unless you are a local.
Admission
Some other colleges I applied to are NIFT, MIT Pune and Soft Pune. My admission was confirmed for all three however after speaking to alumni from all 4, I decided that MSAP was the best fit for me. I chose this college over NIFT as NIFT was offering me admission for b.des textile design and I was not interested in perusing that course. The admission process for MSAP consists of an entrance exam, portfolio and statement of purpose and personal interview.
Faculty
There is a shortage of faculty in our department with some faculty taking subjects that they are not very experienced in. They are generally quite approachable and understanding and are mostly considerate when it comes to any problems faced by the students. There is also a lot of favouritism and partiality from some faculty where in they will do the work of their favourite students and give them excellent grades and there has been no action taken against this by the HOD or director despite multiple complaints. The exam structure consists of 2 sessional exams of 15 marks each and 1 final exam of 50 marks. The exams are held only for theory subjects and they are generally pretty easy to pass if you prepare well.
Interview Experience
The test consists of drawing and general knowledge based questions. It is a home based test. The interview was held over a call and consisted of general 3-4 questions like "why do you want to join this course?", etc. it is quite easy to get admission in this college
Night Life
It's Manipal, do I have to say any more? There are many clubs that host parties every weekend. There are an endless number of good restaurants and cafes all over the place with are very affordable as well. There is a huge sports complex called Marena that has state of the art facilities. Hostels have a pretty reasonable curfew of 10:30 for 1st years and 11:30 for seniors. The curfew is generally enforced strictly and you need to be careful about that. The locality is very safe, even to roam around at night.
