What Students Say?
Likes
- Campus is large, with adequate sports facilities. There are 2 gyms with varying levels of equipment functionality. Infrastructure is above average for all departments.
- Central Library was a Big Yes for me. Has all genres of books and enough seating capacity.
Dislikes
- Some hostels have old infractructure without proper drinking water availability. 3 occupancy rooms for 1st years make it a bit congested and off putting.
- The campus is very far from any urban centres so there are very few places for entertainment. There can also be language barrier for North Indians outside the campus
Course Curriculum Overview
I chose the college bcoz it offers minors and elective courses in economics and management studies. Also the Production Departmenr offers courses on operation, supply chain and data analytics. I would say for core departments, the curriculum is lagging with respect to relevance in the industry. Pivot the production engineering course more towards industrial engineering and operation research subjects. First sem exams happen almost every month they are easy to moderate in difficulty level.
Internships Opportunities
All kinds of Roles are offered but the more lucratives ones are on the Coding or Analytics side. FAANG like Google or Amazon offer 30-50LPA but they only hire from CSE or ECE. Flipkart, Salesforce etc offer SDE roles starting from 15-20LPA. There are Consulting firms like McKinsey, Accenture strategies or the Big 4 or banks like Standard Chartered and Goldman Sachs that come for data analyst roles and offer in the neighborhood of 20LPA. Usually all branches students do projects related to Web Development, Robotics, IOT, Artificial Intelligence or Machine Learning. Some of the best ones even present their papers in international conferences and journals.
Placement Experience
Placements are decent. 60% of the roles on campus are software related. Most core branch students also prepare for coding or analytics related roles. Although I would say one must choose a circuital branch at a lower college over core branch here. Currently the IT Hiring is under recession so less jobs are seen on campus and even fewer internship openings particularly from Core Branches. Highest packages are between 50-90LPA on campus and average for CSE would be around 25LPA, for ECE, EEE 20LPA and core branches 12-15LPA. Pre Recession placements percentage was upwards of 90% for every department and nearly 100% for CSE. I ultimately plan to get an MBA or an MS in Finance abroad. Before that I would want to get some experience as an analyst at a buy side firm or a bank.
Fees and Financial Aid
For the first year. Annual Tuition fee is around 1,75,000Rs and hostel fee is close to 60,000Rs. Scholarships are available at economic basis as well as category basis. SC/ST categ. students have complete exemption from tuition fees along with people with annual income under 1 Lakh Rupees. Apart from people with under 5 Lakh ruppee annual income will have some percentage of annual tuition fees remission.
Campus Life
The Annual Fest is called NITTFEST which is a vibrant week long celebration on campus. Artists and entertainment celebrities are called to perform. Big Brands provide sponsorships. The technical fest is called Pragyan and I feel they need to catch up with rest of the colleges. Library has all varieties of books available including core engineering books like theory of machines, metrology to Discrete Mathematics and Data structures. Also Banking and Finance related books and Micro and Macroeconomic literatures also philosophical and Political commentaries. The classrooms are old school and I felt the need of airconditioning to tackle Trichy's hot and dry climate. There projectors and mics available for professors. The first year lecture halls are small and dont even require microphone to be audible. All kinds of technical and non technical clubs exist. The induction for technical clubs start second year onwards. There are some language and ethnic groupism within the selection process of some otherwise brilliant clubs.
Hostel Facilities
Hostels are in my opinion sub decent as a under ten NIRF ranked college deserves better. The buildings are old and some hostels dont even have drinking water supply. Meal quality is fine. Sometimes its too oily but above average for a public university mess. Mess is divided between north and south cuisines, both comparable in quality. Breakfast is usually the bestband dinner being the worst of all Non-Veg is served 2-3 times a week. With almost every meal there is a complementary juice or shake. Mess and hostel registration happens on the days of campus reporting itself.
Admission
I got NIT Warangal Metallurgy in the first round of JoSAA counselling as well as NIT Srinigar IT in the second and third rounds. Chose Production at NITT over them because I dont like Coding or Metallurgy but am enthusiastic about operations and supply chain. The admission happens through JoSAA counselling on the basis of JEE Main scores. Above 98.5 percentile is safe scote for General Males. 98 percentiles should be enough for OBC and EWS males(both other state). For females decrease 1 percentile each.
Faculty
Faculties for the first year are chill. Teaching style incorporates primarly traditional chalkboard learning but also projectory and video supplements. Depanding on the branch there are 2 or 3 lab subjects. More Faculties have their PhDs/MPhils from Indian Universities. The maths professor V Ravichandran particularly stands out in my opinion. There are 2 Cycle-Tests that each comprise around 20% of the grade the end semester exams account for close to 50%. Almost everyone passes first year exams
Night Life
Personally like the Cafe Coffee Day and Lassi Shop near Agate Hostel to hangout. 1st year boys have hostel curfews after 10 PM so cannot roam the campus late nights. Near every hostel is a fast food store and there is one supermarket and a south Indian eatery as well. Girls hostel throughout all years have night curfews so they do not enjoy the privilege of staying out late unlike boys. There are practically no good hangout spots outside the campus as its an extremely far flung rural setting. As you leave the campus you are only met by a National Highway and flyovers leading to markets of semi-rural Tamil Nadu
Other Applied Colleges
Delhi Technological University - [DTU] | Bachelor of Technology [B.Tech] {Lateral} (Mechanical Engineering)
I felt NITT is a better alternative for a core branch
