Course Curriculum Overview

5

even tho i didnt choose this course due to part of its curriculum i find architecure design theory and architectural representation and detailing dubjects to be very fun. while assignments of most other subjects sometimes feel like a chore to do these two subjects feel refreshing as they make u look for new perspectives and different details of a building or even in nature. in terms of real world preparation while assessing every assignment that was given the faculty take care to respond abt the real world issues or drawbacks in the design created by a student. they also explain abt it in detail. abt exams theres usually just one set of exams at the end of each semester with a sometimes a set of exams mid semester for people with backlogs. and these exams are usually easy to moderately difficult

Internships Opportunities

3

i havent worked under any company yet so im not sure abt the roles and stipends offered but i do know that mostly the roles are that of an assistant to the architect (maybe junior or senior). some companies give stipend whereas some do not. but internship is definitely a really good way to test ur skills in some real life scenarios as even if they wont use ur designs in their projects they are willing to share u the project details with the interns as well as give the interns their feedback after their design is complete.

Placement Experience

3

Generally speaking there is no proper placement system in our college but there are internships in 4th year and generally students do get jobs in that company after the 5yr course. After talking with seniors ive understood that the starting salary package can be expected to be around 1.2 lpa.

Fees and Financial Aid

I come under the open category. The yearly fee structure for open category students is 88,160. tuition fee- 72,489 , development fee- 10,511 , insurance+sports+cultural- 160 , admission fee- 1000 , library fee-1000 , student activities (events and seminars)- 3000 The yearly fee structure for OBC/EWS category is 51,916. tuition fee- 36,245 , development fee- 10,511 , insurance+sports+cultural- 160 , admission fee- 1000 , library fee-1000 , student activities (events and seminars)- 3000 The yearly fee structure for NT/SBC category is 15,671. tuition fee- 0 , development fee- 10,511 , insurance+sports+cultural- 160 , admission fee- 1000 , library fee-1000 , student activities (events and seminars)- 3000 The yearly fee structure for SC/ST category is 5160. tuition fee- 0 , development fee- 0 , insurance+sports+cultural- 160 , admission fee- 1000 , library fee-1000 , student activities (events and seminars)- 3000 There is scholarships availabe but im not certain of the name of it. Its a govt. scholarship/freeship scheme for students of category SC/ST/OBC/NT/SBC/EWS/OPEN (EBC only cap or online admission) and minority

Campus Life

4

Annual and technical festivals held in the college are TARASH, MERAKI, VISIONATA and a few other small events as well. Tarash is usually held in january. The library is packed well with all the books ull ever need for the 5yr course with books ranging from general things to in depth into a certain topic. besides these there are also different architecture magazines and other material. every classroom is fitted with drafting tables and stools and also has a projector setup. There are different sports competitions like football, cricket, badminton, esports and more for both girls and boys. but these events are held outside the college campus at rented grounds due to there being no space for grounds or any other courts in the college campus. The student council is the main club thing in the college. they are responsible for organising all the events and festivals in the college. the student council has different factions that focus on certain parts of organising the event for example there are groups for sponsorship, on site event management, escort etc. the heads and co-heads of these factions select volunteers from different classes. and each event has their own instagram profiles for new students or for anyone interested to check out.

Hostel Facilities

3

facilities provided in the hostel room are decent at best. the toilets arent attached but a common toilet for all the hostellers. the toilets are european and maintained quite well too. coming inside the room its rather small having two single beds and a table in between them fit snug between the walls of the room. and theres also a single cupboard each for both the roommates. the hostel has ac rooms and non ac rooms in two sharing form. and it also has one 1bhk shared room. the monthly rent for non ac rooms are 2500 and for ac its 5000 and for the 1bhk its 10000. registration process is simple too u just have to ask for the registration form at the reception or in the admin room, fill it and wait for the confirmation call. but it is a bit difficult to get admitted to the hostel due to high demand. in terms of affordability its the best as theres no other hostels or PGs nearby that offer rooms at such low rent. but a thing to note is that food is not provided by the hostel but there are canteens nearby.

Admission

i got my admission to this college through the cap allotment system. in the cap allotment i applied for other colleges like SEA (mumbai), L.S Raheja (mumbai), Kamla Raheja (mumbai) and a couple more i cant recall with Hiray college being like the 5th of my preferance. Im a non maharashtrian so most of the colleges have majority seats reserved for maharashtra domiciles and my percentile was 70% in 12th which could be the reason why i was alloted this college. In my home state (kerala) i applied to colleges through KEAM entrance exam and was alloted to SCMS School of Architecture (Ernakulam). I took my admission there as cap allontment results hadnt been published at that time. i transferred from SCMS in kochi to Hiray college in Mumbai with expectations for better exposure and opportunities. the admission process was rather easy in my college. we just had to go there submit a few documents like cap allotment result, aadhar card, 10th and 12th marksheet, domicile certificate, income certificate (for fee waivers or EWS category students) etc, fill their admission form and pay the fees. overall cutoff of this college is rather low as ik a few of my have gotten admission even with just 60% in their 12th. the exam accepted for this course is NATA and the cutoffs for this course is calculated considering both 12th percentile and NATA score.

Faculty

4

a class consists of 45 and there are two classes per batch. there are 4-6 faculty for every studio subject so that each teacher can focus on their small group of students. there are 2 teachers at least for every theory subjects. Most of the faculty are very friendly and helpful in guiding the students but just like everywhere there are a few that are more often than not rude but are only very few to begin with. im not gna name any of them due to privacy reasons. my one incident was when i went to the staffroom to meet my subject teacher during break but i couldnt find her in her in her place so i asked another teacher sitting nearby and they mocked me asking if i could see her in her seat and went on to mockingly say hi to my subject teacher even tho she wasnt there. but thats like the only incident and most other faculty are really friendly. yea but they can be a nightmare if u are late on ur submissions. and abt exams, theres usually just one set of exams at the end of a semester, which are mostly easy. theres only descriptive answer exams for the theory subjects and drafting or jury for studio subjects. most students are easily able to pass the exams

Night Life

4

The college is located in bandra a prime location in mumbai. there is a gym nearby which is rather small but decently equipped and there are many eating spots nearby including subway, dominoz, flavours of china etc. there are two gardens nearby too for a nice and cool place to hangout. these are all within walking distance. a short rickshaw ride away is BKC, jio world drive, a mall where people can go for movies or shopping. hostel gates close at 11pm so students who decide to go out have to come back before then or take prior permission to stay out till later. the locality is pretty safe to roam around at night too.

Course Curriculum Overview:

I chose the architectural course because I love designing buildings. The teachers were good, and there weren't too many students in each class. They knew a lot about architecture and taught us in different ways, like drawing and going to see real buildings. The exams were fair and not too hard, but you had to study. Overall, I liked the course and learned a lot about architecture.

Placement Experience:

There is no campus placement for architecture students. After completion of the degree, one can apply for jobs or opt for masters. Architects get an average starting salary of 20-25 thousand. The course is pretty expensive including college fees and printing prices. One can also open a private firm and earn enough money. There are very few open students getting placed. My plans after getting a degree are to apply for masters. For a teaching job, one must complete masters.
