Course Curriculum Overview
The course is practical based, i loved that idea. I believe art can't be taught and the same principle runs in the college, basic instructions are given in first year and from second year onwards we do our thing. We really have fun during the academic year and even during exams because all we do is create art that we love the most, so we are never stressed
Internships Opportunities
The final year students have to attend a two month internship compulsory. They could choose their own choice or the college would provide. The best places the college have provided to my seniors are raw mango, coptex, nalli silks for textile, phantom and other VFX labs for vcd students. Painting, sculpture and ceramic students work as apprentices to other significant artists.
Fees and Financial Aid
The fees is 1000 per year for students from Tamil Nadu and 20,000 for other state students. The sc,st students pay 500 per year. The initial fees to be paid including tution fees, caution fees, registration fees, admission fees, development fees, lab fees, etc is 10,000 for Tamil Nadu students and 30,000 to other states and 1000 for sc,st. The sc,st scholarship, talent scholarship and weavers scholarship is available, this scholarship will cover all the fees of students.
Campus Life
We don't have much functions. We only have freshers day, Pongal fest and onam fest. Our library is amazing, it has rare collection of art books and sketchbooks of some of our great alumnis like KCS Paniker and Kanayi kunhiraman. Our classrooms are equipped with a touch screen tv, and we study through movies, web series and documentaries about art. As most students are deeply into art , we just have a basketball club, volleyball club and football club and these clubs play during free hours. There are individual student run social group, one among them is kaylir, and another is about offering art class to less privileged students of kannagi nagar.
Admission
I applied to govt college of fine arts, trissur, Trivandrum college of fine arts, Raja Ravi Varma college of fine arts in mavelikkara and Kumbakonam college of fine arts. The first three Colleges had a common entrance system, which I got in 36th rank and for Kumbakonam, I was regected as I was from another state and they only accept students from Tamil Nadu, then i applied to govt college of fine arts, chennai, i got 15th rank and as I loved the campus, i thought of opting here. The entrance here is live sketching followed by creative painting and a knowledge test. For us we had an old woman as the model for live sketching and then for creative painting, the topic was "a colorful bird" I scored highest on creative painting, I painted a black silhouette of a bird in a cage, looking out of a window where a sparrow sits, even though the sparrow isn't a colorful bird, compared to the caged Bird the sparrow is colorful. The knowledge test consists of art history and general knowledge ques.
Faculty
Most of the faculty members are super friendly, namely Venkat sir of sculpture department, Sivaraman sir and Radha ma'am of painting department, sipi sir and krishnamoorthy sir of textile dept are the best. They have vast knowledge of art and would answer our doubts in detail without any hesitation, they guide us to think better so that we create better art. Some staffs are rude and have very old mindset, they teach us to copy old masters painting and temple sculptures rather than do something on our own. Our exams are mostly practical,we have 10 practical subjects and 2 theories yearly for exam. The theory are easy and are basic understanding we get while doing practical. Students usually fail during their first year and manly for English as they come from Tamil medium and lack english education. Other than that most students pass in the rest of the year.
