What Students Say?
Likes
- The library is spacious and well maintained, and the fields covered by the books are very wide. It is my favorite place in the college as i can study for long hours with no disturbance.
- The labs are all well equipped and the faculty are knowledgeable about the experiments. Students are not discouraged from playing around with the equipment to find out more on their own
Dislikes
- There is poor network coverage in half the spots in campus. Nearing those spots would literally make the network drop from 5g to no bars at all.
- Every expense incurred by the vehicle construction and racing clubs have to be handled by the students. The entry fee for these clubs is also too high.
Course Curriculum Overview
The mechatronics course, after the third sem is entirely focused on integrating the software and hardware aspect of modern electronics. I picked this course as i wanted to be able to learn everything. The course did not disappoint as even though I am only in my second year, i am sufficiently knowledgeable in 3 programming languages and also have a very good understanding of field knowledge like part machining, lathe usage, CAD designing, etc. The exams are also appropriately timed but its on the students to keep the assignment list completed. Its hard to come back after failing to submit one assignment. The curriculum is actually very well focused on real world applications and the faculty focus on placement training skills like public speaking, aptitude, etc from the first year itself. All courses are required to learn programming languages regardless of their base, be it core or IT. This makes the student knowledgeable in most mainstream languages helping them in placement as well
Placement Experience
Students become eligible for placement from the third semester. Many students have obtained good packages in companies like Bosch, Infosys, etc. Many companies visit the college, and a number of offers are made. My course has a 86% placement record, which is quite good. I plan to go for placements but will only accept the package if its above 10 lpa. Else, I plan on going for higher studies.
Fees and Financial Aid
Regardless of the course, the whole year's fees comes out to be 150000 for students coming through TNEA counselling, and 200000 for students coming with donation. Additionally, every semester will have exam fees that varies from 4000 to 5000 INR. There are scholarships available for students coming under the 7.5% government school quota, and also for students whose parents earn less than 2 lpa.
Campus Life
Campus life is quite good, as the campus is quite spacious and well shaded to shield from the sun. The canteen is well stocked and the food is fresh. Culturals might be something the college lacks in, as not many cultural events are held here. However, many education related events like symposiums, competitions, and inter college contests take place. As mentioned in a previous answer, the library is enormous and well stocked with a wide variety of books. The classes themselves have a smart board that can be operated without the need for a projector. They can access the internet, and are basically a large interactive stand alone TV. This makes teaching very fun. There are many sports that are available to the students to play, but if you are not selected for the college team, you wont be allowed to use the football ground or basketball court. However, the quality of the sporting equipment and playing ground is undeniably good. There are many student organised clubs like Krizen, etc
Admission
I chose this college as it was closer to me than other colleges i applied for. I got a seat in HITS, as well as CUK. I declined them both for having poor placement records, something that SKCET excels in. Even though i am not a hosteller, the hostel food was reported to be very bad by my friends. This might be a negative point for those looking to stay in the hostel. Other hostel facilities like cleaning, space, etc are quite good still. One of the main ways to gain entrance into these collleges is to do the 12th grade exams well, after which you can apply to the college through the TNEA scheme. It is easy to get into the college provided you have a cutoff above 170 in your 12th boards. Once i got into the college, the admission process was quite easy, except that they expected the entire year fees to be paid upfront. Overall a 7/10 experience.
Faculty
The faculties are extremely approachable, solving any doubts that the students may have. Students who are lagging behind the class are also encouraged to take part in discussions and talks. Every class in every sem has a thing called "snap-talk" where the student has to talk for a few minutes on any topic related to the course. This improves the students' public speaking skills. The best faculty would be Mr. Feroz Ali in the Mechatronics engineering course. Even though some faculties might appear strict, every single one will answer doubts without hesitation or belittling the student. There are 2 internal exams every semester called CIA-1 and CIA-2. These, along with other internal components like quiz, presentation, and tutorial, make up 40% of the final grade. The remaining 60% is from sem end exam. The exams range from moderate to difficult, but are extremely efficient in judging the student's expertise in a subject. There are a few arrears every sem but most students pass.
